View Full Version : New Fairing Install

Installed Thule # 871 fairing on the VX yesterday. Its the 38" model. I opted for this model v. the # 555 version because the install seemed easier, and it was. The longest part was waiting for the horizontal mighty mounts for isuzupart.net

I think it looks pretty good... the 'wings' on the side compliments the rear spoiler nicely.

Please excuse my ignorance, but is the roof rack thule or is it izuzu with the thule faring(wing?)
I do wish to get a good rack so which is best?
Does the faring/wing cut down the wind resistance for the rack?
Yours looks good, I do not need the ski part of the rack though.
Where is the best place to get a best price? How much shuold I be paying?
Please direct me!!!
Thanks

I located some horizontal mighty mounts(for bike accesories not ski) at a local sporting goods store. They have 2 sets left at $5.99 each. As soon as I said "wing-rider" to the sales rep he wanted to unload them on me.

If anyone is having a hard time finding these, let me know. I don't know how much they are going for on isuzuparts.net or st. charles isuzu. 6 bucks sounded like a good deal.

drdavis4u, the rack is the OEM yakima rack made specifically for the Vehicross. There is no other rack that will fit, believe me I researched it. If you need the part number for the rack, I can give it to you.

I installed the fairing b/c the wind noise is caused by the shape of the bars. If you don't have the aero bars installed, there is no need for a fairing.

I researched fairing options and the best choice was the Thule #871 model. It was easily installed with 4 horizontal mighty mounts.

There's no more wind noise after install, so I guess it works. You can purchase at your local REI, costs $45.

Nice deal Eclipse. I was curious as to a roof rack fairing but bever did any research on it. I recently aquired a OEM rack and put it on and the wind noise is enough to drive one mad. I just might have to mimick your purchase. ;)

Cool pix,
but does thois cut down on that annoying howl from the rack at anything over 60??

EclipseGSX
11/08/2003, 06:30 AM
by redirecting the wing over the wingbars, the wind noise is drastically reduced.

i was trying to listen by sticking my head out go about 60 mph. wind noise was nominal, the bars use to start howling between 35-40 mph.

if anyone needs any help/tips with the installation, give me a holla.

I kinda like the wind noise.. gives the illusion of going faster than you really are... ;Db;

But that deflector does look very nice.. not tacky or cheap...

Hi,

saw the picture, it looks nice and i wanna get one too, but i'm just wondering if anyone tried a yakima fairing before and how's that compared with the thule fairing?

also how's the wind noise at about 70m/h now? just wanna know how's the effect before and after installing this thing, cos it's a pretty common speed i drive on highway, and the wind noise is just killing me.

thx

i checked out both the yakima and thule fairings... if you take a look at the yakima fairing install it, seems the the outer brackets are specifically made for round yakima bars, which we don't have:

http://www.yakima.com/instructions/1032276b-instr.pdf

With the Thule fairing, I cut off part of the square bracket (as instructed by manufacturer) and threaded the screw though the upper bracket and mighty mount assemby, then tightened everything down.

I wanted to go with Yakima, since the rack components are Yakima. But the Thule fairing presented more viable mounting option. I just installed the Thule fairing in reverse so the brand name is not facing outward.

Well, i was wondering where the hell that noise was comming from. thought i had a bad weather stripping on the back door.
so i went and got this, and the noise is gone. thanks

also, can you post a better detailed pic of how you installed?
i went with the square bolt in the track of the rack bar (per instructions) i didnt see anywhere where it said to cut the square box off the back. as it stands now, i doubt i will be able to mount my ski rack to the top, as the tri wing nut seems to be in the way

alright, guys...
just wanna get this straight-

in order to get this cool mod ordered and set up i need :

1 thule # 871 fairing and an order(s) of horizontal might mounts, right?

how many mounts come in a set? best prices for items? best place for purchase?

thanks, and excuse all the ?s.

p.s. thanks for the find and pics!

I'm glad so many ppl are interested in the mod.

I'm attaching the install instructions so everyone can get an idea before making the purchase:

http://www.thuleracks.com/thule/instructions/501539302,%20870-872.pdf

Apostle, if you refer to page 3, the diagram in the middle on the right refers to 'cutting off the rectangular clamp'. Also, can you send a pic of your setup? I'm pretty sure you can fit a ski rack, you just need to offset to one side. If you look in my third pic you can see the wingnut is oriented lengthwise along the car, and the mighty mount for the ski rack is just to the right.

Xiaoz, for some reason the screws and wingnut did not come with the horizontal mighty mounts. I just happened to have a spare set. I can assure you that the carriage bolt is a regular size that can be found at your local hardware store. I've been thinking about replacing the wingnut for security reasons.

2K1 1K2, you can pick up the Thule fairing at your local REI or outdoor store, cost $45 + tax.
The mighty mounts can be purchased at isuzuparts.net or St. Charles Isuzu:

the horizontal mighty mount part # 2-90116-905-0

I ordered from isuzuparts.net and the price is $16.12 for a set of 4, and $7.95 with shipping. total $24.07

hope this helps everyone.

Got my fairing today. Goes together quite easily. The only thing is the actual mounting of the Thule mounts to the mighty mounts. Loner nuts will be needed to thread through both (as was already stated above). I wish I got a chance to actually mount it today, but since the wond is hell here today and I didnt get a chance to get to the hardware store, it will have to wait.

I look forward to getting it on though. :)

WormGod

Mine has mounts, but the mounts it came with wont work with the Yakima bars. They are square tubular. I need to mount those to the mighty mounts that will work. It's not a big deal. Just calls for a longer nut and bolt setup. Easily remedied at a hardware store.

All good things come in time. Certain aspects of the day, such as WORK, and calling insurance company about the roof tiles blown off my house in this sickening wind have me sorta busy. Trust me though, I will get right on top of it as soon as I can. ;)

went to REI and bought the yakima 38" fairing, also went to home depot get a pair of 3" long carriage bolts, then i just mount the fairing on top of 2 mighty mounts, Eclips mount the brackets under the mighty mount, for the yakima, i can only mount on top of it, otherwise, the fairing would have been bent, anyway, i didn't install the center two brackets because there's no hole for the bolt (i could have if i just make the hole myself i think), now that the fairing is a little bit high above the top of the car, not sure what's the result when driving. Will tell ya later on, but anyway, it fits!

Here're several pictures of the yakima fairing i installed, the wind noise is gone, even at more than 85m/h, i think should be fine even at higher speed, the fairing covers the rack bar pretty nicely partially because it's installed higher than normal(on top the the mighty mount), the only problem i noticed is that when the road is very bumpy, the two side of the fairing might hit a little bit on the rack holder on the VX top because of the fairing material, so u will hear some click noise, i know that's because of its lacking of the center two bracket holders. I thought of putting on two more mighty mount and then use a belt binding the center brackets together, but since the clapping sound is not so much, maybe later on. But i'm wondering if there cound be a better way to hold that.

anyway, not bad. looks cool.

Here's the link of the pic.

Seems like you could cut off the round part in the back and direct mount just the top part directly to the mighty mount. You don't really need the loop as it's designed for a round bar. It would lower the profile of the fairing, but that may be even better in cutting down wind noice. Just my opinion.

edwin,

i just got it from my local REI, $50, i think u can get it a little cheaper on website, i just can't wait to put it on.

johnapolo, thx for ur idea, actually i thought about it, but the plastic bracket will be more fragile if i cut the round part off, so i just leave it there, as long as the wind noise is nolonger there, fine with me.

pity the center part bracket is not the same as the two side ones, otherwise, it's almost perfect, i could use another 2 mighty mounts .

Hey EclipseGSX,
Nice install, believe it or not, I for the first time this past weekend turned down my stereo enough to hear the wind noise coming from the roof.
How did you get rid of the "THULE" logo on the fairing?

Great fairing though. REALLY takes care of the wind noise.

After figuring for a while, finally i think this way of mounting the yakima is fairly good, no dangling clicking sound, also center bracket firmly touchs the vehicle top, personally i prefer the yakima fairing looks.

i used another mighty mount and a plastic wrap, actually u can order another side bracket and mount it at the center the same way the other 2 brackets do.

Anyway, for those of u still thinking which one to go, here're some more pictures.

I would like to change my "New" Yakima fairing look. What I need
is the Yakima font! Dose anyone happen to have this font?
I like Yakima and all, have used em for years. but don't like to look like all you other VX people with a racks on top! Would like to change writing on the fairing!

thanks

For those interested in a fairing for your VX, this is the thread I used. The installation instructions and pictures are quite good. Like the author, I also decided to reverse the fairing so that the Thule logo doesn't show. I think that gives it a cleaner look.

Fuzzy,

A fairing on the ol' roof rack would be great, but I don't think that Yakima sells the horizontal mounts for our cross bars anymore. I'm sure I might be able to fabricate something out of metal or plastic strapping if I had to. Are you going to go to Moab so I can get a closer look at your set up?
