Really wish you guys were willing to wait a week - Sonya finishes finals on the 14th which would give us enough time to pack and drive to Moab in time for the 19th (the following Monday). If not I'm out until Moab 2016 for sure.

I should amend that to say that even if it were moved a week I'm still not sure we'd be able to go, but at least it would be in the realm of the possible. Obviously you guys have to do what's right for the group that is for sure going.

OK, so I'm DEFINITELY coming this year...my first year. I've NEVER been off-road... well not like the kind out there at Moab. Since my VX is a show car, obviously I can't take her off road... or can I? I wouldn't mind taking off road where there won't be a single scratch on her, like on the easiest trail or something, but I'm not even sure if that exists. On another note however... I definitely want to go OFF ROAD with someone else and see the VX do some CRAAAAZY stuff!!!!, but since I don't know anyone.... and both the guys local to me are likely not going... I'm not sure who I can ride with...

Ultimately, my ideal trip would be to go out, meet everyone, go off-roading, and then maybe a couple days camping waaaaaaaaaaay out in no mans land and come home...

Just throwing this out there

Show off your mint VX at the Stoop, and then ride along with someone else on the trails. If you want guarantees of ABSOLUTELY NO DAMAGE... Do not take it off road. Period.

I'm with you. I will go on an easy trail, but I cant risk my daily driver.

I am actually pretty close to you. I live in West Chester, Oh. When are you heading out and when do you plan to return. Perhaps there is a convoy possibility.

Don't get me wrong... Fins & Things, Hell's Revenge, and many other trails can be done safely by a stock VehiCROSS. I've been to Moab 7 times, and my VX has suffered more just from living in Chicago. I'm just saying that you ARE going to bump and scrape bits if you go wheelin'. The ONLY way to avoid any kind of blemish from going off road is to stay on it.

There are actually some very scenic trails in Moab that are basically dirt roads. As far as any of the other trails even though they can be done by stock VXs there is still always a chance of damage...even in the easiest of trails. But that said, if you have the chance to go...GO! It's a great experience. You will have a ton of fun with a lot of great people. You will find no shortage of open seats and invites to ride along...you may become the camera guy in exchange though ;)

I guess thats what I mean. I will go on the easiest one(s). I understand that going off the road can cause bumps and scrapes.....I am just trying to minimize the high dollar repairs. I dont go "wheelin" with it ever, but the VX isnt a show vehicle for me either. I take care of it, and its more than capable, but off roading is not a hobby for me at this point so I would rather be more cautious at this point.

I use my VX as my daily driver, and try to keep it in as good a shape as possible, but I have been to Moab 8 or 9 times now, and like Gill said; I get more "damage" just driving it around every day. Like others have said, there are some easy trails out in Moab and it's always amazing to see what these little things are capable of. As I've said before, and others will attest to I'm sure, I tend to drive like a little old lady going to church on Sunday when I go off road. Off-roading is not a hobby for me and Moab is the only time that my VX sees any kind of serious off-roading (other than dirt roads around Colorado). There is ALWAYS the possibility of some minor scrapes doing ANY trail in Moab, even the dirt roads, but the thrill of doing some of these "obstacles" and getting to hang out with a bunch of people who share the same passion that I have is well worth it.

If you're keeping the VX as a "show car" then I wouldn't even drive it on the road because it could get rock chips in the paint, dirt and mud on the undercarriage and some crazy teenager who is doing more texting than driving could plow into you. I am planning on taking it a little easy this year (yeah, I say that every year) and I've been looking over the trails for something that is relatively easy with some nice views. Anyone is welcome to come along and we can discuss trails further at The Stoop.

Can't wait to see both of you, and everyone else, real soon.

My 2 cents....Since many have expressed desire (like Mark just did), to go on some easier trails, I suggest LA SAL MOUNTAIN. That was very pleasant, and since it was at elevation, and had trees, it was a bit cooler, which is always welcome when it's 90+ in Moab. Or 7 MILE RIM, that trail was also very mild and extremely scenic! The group hasn't gone on either of these for about 3 years.

Even some of the "easier" trails have one or two obstacles that can cause scrapping.

These are all taken on Fins&Things and HellsRevenge. both considered VERY doable for stock VXs.

It's pretty hard to get down these 2 slides w/o scrapping the front lower cladding, at my stock height + slightly bigger tires, because you end up sliding down it, even with full brakes. I've scraped every time (done it like 5 times now).
Dave is lifted and didn't scrape.

WOOOOOOW you all !!!! That view is freaking AWESOME... ARE YOU KIDDIN ME????

OH MAN...I love nature and that view is juuuuust breathtaking. WOW...

So I DEFINITELY am going off road with someone lol, and the longer off road, the better for me... I've never been, I love outdoors, and I love VX's and have NEVER seen more than 2 in the same place at the same time. I've also never been around more than 2 or 3 VX enthusiasts at the same time. So this trip is going to blooooooow my mind I'm sure :yeso:

Yea, an easy trail would be a great idea just to get everyone together and have some awesome pics together... I'd like to stay for a few days, make it a little vacation for me. I also LOVE camping and have ALL the gear... and have always thought about taking the VX off road, out in the cut into no mans land (or at least far enough away from technology that you don't see the "city lights") and camping for a day or 2. Does anyone do that? I know about getting a room, and I probably will for the first night, but the next couple of days I would like to go camping, out in the cut.

Getting excited about going...

I'd never seen more than 2 VXs together, so when we get these things lined up, I just go picture crazy! On the distant pic, I dropped back and waited until the line up was far enough away that I could get them and the rock formations in the same pic, it's sooooo much fun to see a line up of VXs.....which sadly I will not be part of this year, but I'll still enjoy seeing it and snappin' pics!

hey wait a sec... Could the VX02 make it through the obstacles just the same as a stock vx? I know the rear is empty, but other than that, is it basically a stock vx... or even better with some "extras" that would make it better off road than stock? :_thinking

Really??? Oh man .... that is such a let down. I love the look of it (although the interior is still "dated" to me)... it's a shame...I had no idea

What about the VX04 or the XU-1... do you know if they were "real" or not? I've always wanted to know...

On a side note, I've always dreamed and dreamed about having the same exact doors on my vx that the XU-1 has... I've even went as far as looking into the cost... and of course I decided not to. Way to much involved.

But, the quick look I did give the VX04 would suggest its more structurally stable...
....maybe someone looked closer than I did..and can comment.

The VX02 is basically held together under the back cover , by a very flimsy

Jo.

I was thinking of maybe Moab pics with just US.. and the VX in some crazy situations lol... no models necessary ... Did it fall to the wayside because of lack of interest or you just got to busy? I'd definitely be interested. I can't hang the current calendar at work... and I LOVE showing people about the VX. I would buy one. Even if it weren't a calendar and it was just a collage or something...

My friend Shannon and I have known each other since Middle School and are very close (friends only). We've goofed around with taking pics with a lot of the cars I've owned in the past and I've asked here recently if her and her sister (similar build) would do some photo shoots with my VX when its finished and they both said yes. Her sister's husband is a professional photographer (very good VERY good)... and I'm going to pay him to do some photo shoots with Shannon and her sister with my VX. I was thinking of submitting a couple so that one of them could possibly go into a future calender :) I doubt I could get them to travel... they are both married with kids...but they've already said yes to taking some pics with my VX this summer...here's a pic of us a couple years ago.

I was thinking of submitting a couple so that one of them could possibly go into a future calender :) I doubt I could get them to travel... they are both married with kids...but they've already said yes to taking some pics with my VX this summer...here's a pic of us a couple years ago.

http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/2/thumbs/tyler7.jpg (http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=24415)

....I simply offered some "Pin Up" style 'Garage Glam' shots for it.

They were very well received, but not thought 'suitable' for a general calendar, which I fully understand...

....so the following year I offered a complete "Pin Up" calendar.

Not sure why the other one wasnt produced.

As for the models/pics you plan for your VX....

...by all means send some to me for consideration
( And any one else too!!)

Over the past couple of years many here have stepped up to help...
....and frankly thats what keeps it going.

Its by NO MEANS a money maker...!!...and is pretty time consuming too.

Any net profit after expenses gets sent to Scott to help with this sites running costs....
...and those that shoot/ model or loan their vehicles enjoy seeing their efforts in print ,
and get back page "credits" for their portfolios.....or just plain old bragging rights!

I'm really not sure I have the time Billy..

Jo if it ever gets into a go mode I have a ton (9 years worth) of pics...the past few trips better quality than the rest. I am sure Sue,and others have a ton also. I know I would donate any I have (for a credit ;))

....frankly the pics for a general calendar would be the easy part, obviously I have tons,
as do you and many others who always willing offer them.

Its the formatting/layout'ing/artworking'ing/print ready'ing/ordering/billing/collecting/mailing etc etc...

....that takes the time!

Lets see how busy I am come Aug/Sept time.......
....or somebody else might want to resurrect it if demand is there.

I didn't scrape any of my cladding on either of the two trails I did. But I'm running 1.5" coil spacers and a slight TB crank, plus tires that are 1" taller. I did scrape my front tow hooks (I have the down-facing Trooper ones with the rope clips) and my Kilby plates a few times but nothing serious. Can't recall whether I hit the gas tank plate but I don't think so. And I'm almost positive that I didn't hit the sliders or diff guard.

That said there was discussion after last year to the effect that some of the trails are deteriorating and are somewhat rougher than in previous years when many of them were deemed "just fine" for stock VX's. My recommendation to a stock VX'er looking for a little cheap insurance would be to pick up a set of Trooper plates at a local junkyard and spend $35 on a pair of 1.5" Daystar spacers. You (or your friend - thanks again Billy) can attach the plates, install the spacers, and crank the torsion bars in your driveway. Taller tires are good too, but those might be more $$$ than some are willing to spend on top of the journey.

Yes sir, if im going this year that is. Im going to book my room sometime this week just in case and if I cant make it then ill pass the room on to someone else.

HAHAHAHA yeah like I was told Kane Creek Canyon was doable. Almost slipping off the side of the cliff because the other routes were too washed out for a stock vx to get up. Bending my drivers A-arm and pushing the frame sliders into the body were just the easy things that needed fixing. But the middle part of the trail was nice and easy. This year I think it should be, if you have a doubt that a trail might be bad, take a lifted vx.

VX KAT
01/20/2014, 01:31 PM
same with Top of The World! Totally doable in 2010, by 2012 it was just a rock and ledge mine field, would destroy the undercarriage of a non-lifted VX...I had the Kilby's and OMG did they take a beating! Thank gawd for the Kilby's!

From a few other posts it almost seems like it might not be very pleasant to stay at? What's the deal? Should I book here or is there another or better place nearby? Just trying to get something booked so it's locked in. I definitely am not going to miss out this years Moab

Hey Ty

Red Rock is an old "Motel" style place...you park outside your room door for the most part.
Many do stay there..some camp.
They are REALLY cool, they lets us wrench on the vehicles, make a mess..

...and generally take over.

The actual "Stoop" is the porch along the front of the "old side" of the building..
..rooms 101 - 112 I think.
It becomes the social center pretty much.
People meet here in the morn to divide up into trail groups...
...and after wheeling its crowded with people cocktailing ( or not)..
...and wrenching on problems!

New side is Motel6 standard.. old side "was" Motel 2.5 standard!..
...but I guess thats all better now!

Its a good base...lots of fun..and you'll meet everyone!

I stayed at the Hampton Inn last year and this year I'm dividing my stay between the Holiday Inn and the Hampton. I did this because I can get free or highly discounted rooms from my travel club points. I would still go hang at the stoop but retire to more plush accommodations to sleep. Good times to be had at the stoop but I don't need to stay there.
I also explored the renting of a condo for the week. This would be a great option for a group of folks but after gauging interest there just was enough people that could commit at the time.

If you think that there is a better group of people to spend time with...I'll call you a liar to your face...there can be only ONE group as tight as the Isuzu Fam in Moab.
Have probs on tha trail?...The fam will RUSH to your assistance.(we're talk'n parts, fluids, wrenching skills, jacks...WHATEVER)

Have trouble on an obstacle?...the straps come out, we all have one...or two.

We've never left a vehicle that was broke behind that I'm aware of, we operate as an entity...all for one, one for all.

Come up a few dollar$ $hort ? (or MORE, in my case) tha hat gets passed, the problem is solved.

Need a quart of oil?...there's practically a fight to see who gets the privilige of donating.

The Stoop?...never been a fist fight, or anything more worse than mild verbal abuse that I'm aware of....There can be a LOT of poking fun at each other, but that's just...well...NORMAL... At least in the circles I've lived in most of my life. If ya can't take it, as well as ya dish it...well then..:slap:

Jo, it's definitely the VX XV anniversary in the US, but I don't think that there were VX's at ZuZoo the first year that they were available, but I could be totally wrong on that. A few years ago Todd Adams handed out some stickers that said what year it was for the VX meet (the year we all met up at his RV in the campground). I have the sticker at home and I'll have to look at it to see what it says to determine what year this is for the VX meet.

I also plan to take a two week vacation in August (England via Iceland - my first trip out of country in 7 years), and I haven't told work I'd also like a week in May for this too. I still also have a slight alignment issue with my VX (from Spring Creek last year!) and I need to do something about the overheating that VXorado and Bartman pointed out was really pretty bad (the hood and fenders too hot to touch bad). I'm just not sure I'm going to have time to get to these things, I got promoted and work and for some reason they expect even more out of me now!

Yay, I finally got around to making my reservation at The Lodge tonight!

Hopefully I'll feel confident enough to take the VX. Poor ol' thing has become a little "incontinent" lately and I have a couple new leakies on the garage floor. Oh well, if it's something serious, I'll just drive the Mustang and mooch a passenger seat from someone. :) (EDIT: Or just hang out drinking and laughing on the stoop. Either sounds good for the soul.)

Ha ha! I'm not worried.

No matter what I know I'll have a great time. I could do NO off-roading at all and just hang out at The Stoop and have a blast.

I could be a passenger with some people and spend a few days repeating, "OH CRAP, OH CRAP, I'M GOING TO DIE!!!" and have a great time.

Other rides would leave me sitting in the back seat thinking, "When is flight attendant coming back around with more crackers/caviar/wine" and have a great time.

I've saids it before and I'll says it again - the FUN is the hanging out with the people in the group more than the actual activity!

We sort of axed the officially planned VX run last year due to the group being so large and slow. If I remember correctly, we split into a couple smaller groups and it went really well.

I'll be in Moab Sunday through Friday, it would be great to wheel with you and your dad again Justin. :_beer:

I couldn't see out of it. Didn't know where the trail was. It's hard to show off your prowess when you're really not sure where you are exactly. I joined a 4wd club here in Boise that's mostly jeep oriented. After struggling on a few trails with that group, it became obvious to me that a stock Rubicon was far superior to my modified FJ. I think there needs to be at least one run with ALL the VXs on it. They are rarities and damn fine vehicles besides. The opportunity to display as many of them as possible on the same trail should not be missed and should be photographed extensively. I suggest Hell's Revenge.

I wouldn't have thought 30 to 40 vehicles on a trail was doable, but having just come from Easter Jeep Safari, I can say it is.

Tom and Ty, there are quite a few hotels/motels in Moab. The town really is t that big so you'll be close to the Red Rocks no matter where you bed down. Maybe try The Apache? http://www.apachemotelinmoab.com This location has been thrown around as a possible replacement for the Red Rocks if it ever closes. There's also the Best Western that Big Swede mentioned. There's a La Quinta in town and I stayed at a motel on the end of town my first year in Moab called The Silver Sage Inn. It ain't pretty, but it's cheap.

I've waited and waited to see how the "mom drama" in my life was playing out.......and as of yesterday I finally know....I have to take care of several "mom" matters pertaining to selling her house that are date specific and that dang date pretty much overlaps with Moab :_brickwal

Anybody going to Moab want my ENGINE BLANKET? FREE!!
It's not in too bad shape, has one small area where it appears critters chewed on it a bit. Think it has a few fasteners still in it.

LET ME KNOW - I'LL BRING IT!

Still have lots to do to have the VX ready, but it will be ready no matter what. I've taken off work the next 2 days so I can finish it. In saying that... I was hoping someone could help me fix or diagnose a couple things while at Moab.

I was hoping someone could help me really fix my window problem. I've done the "washer/spacer" thing on the regulator bracket, but it's still not right and I just can't figure it out.

I was also hoping to drive a couple other people's VXs that so that I can "feel" how they drive compared to mine. I just have some questions about the suspension and a few other things... but hopefully there will be some help available.

I am bringing with me a box of parts (screws, grommets, fasteners, etc.) so if anyone wants to know what to get or what to use (part numbers, etc.) for any of the restoration stuff that I've done, I"ll have it all with me. I will be able to help with anything related to exterior/body and interior with NO problem, but I don't know squat mechanically about the VX.

:)

Haha, you can drive mine but it is a completely different beast: 5 spd, HD torsion bars, rear locker, Lifted, and 33's it is not the same vehicle it was two years ago.

Oh yeah... and how did I forget this... a locksmith made a spare key for me (he's from another state and is not accessible now)...

The key is STUCK in the ignition. If anyone can bring the tools/etc. OR has the know how... it would be nice to get the key out. I would hate to leave the key in the VX and park it in Utah somewhere while I"m out with you guys onthe trails...

Yeah, anyone that wants to try a 5-spd VX is also welcome to a go in mine. I tried out Mav's 5-spd swap when he was there last year and it was quite different to mine thanks to the shifter design.

Still a lot of wrenching to do on my VX before I leave on Sunday. Radiator needs to be installed, blower motor isn't working and my dash is all torn apart and roof rack and spare tire still needs to be installed. Got a busy day on Staurday!

is the key broken in the ignition, or just stuck?

BAH to both of y'all. I have a grueling, seemingly unending, three and a half hour drive on Sunday. I know, I know....don't hate.

Jamas, I don't know what your schedule is on Sunday, but there are a few VXers convoying over from Denver to Moab. I think that they are planning to leave around 10am (if not earlier) and will be picking me up in Glenwood Springs. Maybe PM Jon (VXorado) as I think he is organizing things.

Major winter storm is predicted for CO tonight and tomorrow.

10 - 20 inches of snow in the mountains and up to 8 inches in the Denver metro area.

Driving from Denver to Moab on Sunday could be very slow and dangerous.

You guys and gals drive safe and make good choices...:)

I am snowed-in in Wyoming today. Road closure miles and miles away. Pretty aggravating since the roads are not that bad where I am right now but after tonight they are going to be horrible! I anticipate further road closures throughout the evening and early morning. Lovely. Be safe folks!

I am sad I missed going this year I have been too busy at work to even check the forum lately. I am going to plan to go next year. I am wondering why the event is held Monday through Friday and not Thursday through Sunday or something so people do not have to take 5-7 days off work to go? too bad today is the last day or I might have driven up tonight after work for the weekend. I will just have to check out all your cool pictures and stories about the trip.

Monday through Friday works for those that drive two days to get here..
...giving them travel time either end :)

Many do stay over the sat/sun at the end of the week...
...there are 6 or 7 VX's / troopers and Amigos etc here now,
doing runs today.

That should be fun!!! Next year we should run the full trail, Gold Bar-Golden Spike-Poison Mesa in Reverse. There's a few sections that would be quite difficult.
