View Full Version : Transmission Jerks when shifting
Hey,
A few days my VX is jerking when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear and when downshifting as well. Sometimes it is normal on high speeds.. Went to mechanic he said no trans problem, mass air flow sensor or some electrical issue from the engine...
Any ideass or similar problems guys?
Thank you :)
Have you changed the fluid? When was it last done?. I had mine changed two years ago by a professional shop and then just dropped the fluid that would drain myself a few weeks ago and then refilled the fluid. It took me a couple days to make sure the correct amount of fluid was in the transmission and it shifts smoother than it has since I purchased it almost 4 years ago. I was over a half quart low the first time I refilled. Noticed rough shifting and jerking, especially after a sharp turn. Not enough fluid in the pan apparently. Did the mechanic hook up the computer and pull codes?

You might also try just greasing the fittings on the drive shaft. It can start binding in a few places if the slip joints start to get dry.

Like Rodl said...I'd check the fluid level. And I'd find a new mechanic!

I had the mass airflow sensor go bad and it didn't do that. I had an idle problem when mine went out. Would not stay running at an idle or idle too high - but no jerking or anything like you explained.

If the dash gear indicator likes flicker it could be a bad transmission selector switch (drivers side of trans where the shift linkage connects).

Yup, the 4L30E is notorious for this kind of behavior with improper fluid level and your mechanic's diagnosis is typical of a non-troubleshooter. It is especially difficult to get the level proper with the fill port adjacent to the drain port on the pan, unlike the "good ol' trannys" with a dipstick to use as a convenient fill point.
I checked the drive shaft, it it loose on both ends (trans and axel)... and dash gear indicator does not show actual gear (shown R when in D mode, or shows P when in 2nd gear etc)
Since my VX '97 RH Japanese version it has the dipstick, level was a bit low so I added and now is fine..
Seems I need to fix driveshaft but how this can be linked to dash indicator and selector?
I am in Georgia, Europe, so no good mechanics to give me real advise and fix the problems... Thanks guys for support

Check the bolts holding the selector switch to make sure they are tight...that may be the cause of your indicators being wrong. Also while you are down there make sure your transmission mount bolts are tight and not missing...they are notorious for vibrating loose.
