Probably asking for trouble but I wanted to see what people think.

Since I can not find a new hood insert I plan on cutting one from my CNC machine out of aircraft aluminum.

Attached is the pdf of a few designs. If you have suggestions or comments let me know. Everything is with a grain of salt so feel free to comment.

what if you took the V moved it to the right commingled the x so it looked like one.

I'm not wild about the side-by-side lettering. Keep in mind that the insert is not flat. If you cut one out of aluminum, you'll prolly need to find someone with a roller to play around with it to get the curvature right.

I've got an extra insert but it's missing some studs. I wasn't really wanting to get rid of it but if your need is urgent, I will.

Here's what I did on mine.

Also, Spyder did something similar except he cut out the new insert from the hood of a Thunderbird (including scoop). Here's the thread: http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showthread.php?t=14984&highlight=thunderbird

The pix are missing from the thread but there's still a pic of the finished product on page 2 of his gallery. It came out Uber-sharp. http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/showfull.php?photo=16941

Its hard to do a cut out like that with LED lights under it with my machine. I have always liked that logo. Could do something similar but not complete so it may not look right.
the guy who had this before me messed up the insert so bad I can not reuse it so I have to make another one. The problem is no one is making them so I thought I would make my own. The studs are not the issue. I can bond studs back on the insert with no problems.
I would love an original one but I am okay making my own. Puts some LED lights under it and it will look good.

Nice...
Not enough time to do something like this and I do not have a thunderbird. If someone wants to quote making one of these I am up for that.

I will work on a design like this to see what I can do with it.

Bill,

Those 'dots' on mine aren't LEDs. I just removed all of the studs & went bolt through for attaching it (some nice SS flat head screws I had on hand - they're painted black now so not really noticable).

If you're interested in my spare, I'll try to snap some pix of it this weekend.

I didn't mean to poo-poo your idea of making one. It'd prolly be a cool project to work on.

I prefer the cad of the \ /

Reminds me of the grill fangs.

Well, if I had a CNC machine available with a bed big enough to do this, I would be designing a functional hood scoop into it, and machining all from one billet of material.

Larger material cost and more machining, but a polished aluminium hood insert and scoop would be one of a kind.

But that is just me.

Sorry,
I meant that I plan on running LED lights under the hood with the VX on it. I would be interested in the spare as I am not sure how the one I plan on making will turn out. At one time I would have been able to make it out of Carbon Fiber but I do not have the shop or tools to make the mold. I ran a shop that did that sort of thing a few years ago.
Still plan on making one just to see how it turns out.

Wish I had that nice of a machine but not exactly what I have. I have a two axis machine that will cut thin sheet metal and that's about it. .090 is about as thick as I can cut. so I would have to use other methods to build a scoop. Not going to happen right now. Maybe down the road.

As soon as I get the hood digitized and in CAD I will make the file available for a small sight donation. Anyone who donates anything to the site I will send a DWG to.
