View Full Version : Need opinions on these wheels ||===||

I'm hoping for some opinions on future rims. I'm planning to run 37" tires and decided this would be a good opportunity to upgrade from my 15" steelies.

Many VXers here are running 17-18" rims and that's what I'm looking for to balance the MEAT & METAL ratio

Current:

Right now, these are my #1 choice. They're not black though and would change my current contrast scheme
Fuel Anza 17x8.5 +6mm

Alternate, I like this new style but I'm not a huge fan of the Rockstar brand. Typically see the old style rockstars on big trucks and mall crawlers.

I'm not too sure on these. Maybe I'm just considering them because they're black and are shown on a 2013 Isuzu V Cross!

What about the Trail Gear Creepers. Real bead locks and tough as hell (they will take a beating)...

With the new links and the towers both having some silver in them I think it will work just fine.

Admit it, with the exception of the star in the hub, the Rockstars look the best. Don't be ashamed. ;)

Can that center cap be swapped out?

Go for the Fuel Anzas! I was looking at them the other day and like 'em a lot.

My question is where did you get the decal? Does some on the forum here sell them?

IIRC...That decal is one of the ones done for Moab in past years.

A member here did the artwork and I think ( bad memory...done so many!!) its one of the ones I got made up..
....and the decals were given out at Moab at cost..

.....with any profit going to this site.

Seems the artwork has been 'borrowed' recently...()

Well I really like my steelies now in the 15" size but I don't like steelies in 17." They just looking cheap and out of place to me.. Also, 37s are almost non existent in 15" & 16", so I can't keep the current rims.

...And hey, don't try to talk me out of my spending spree. :p

I asked Cyrk years ago for permission to use his design to make my own vinyl sticker. I believe he even gave me the correct type file for the vinyl cutter. Fellow VXer, Mdwyer has a vinyl cutter and was nice enough to let me make a decal with his equipment. Mine did say "ProjectZU" above the logo years ago, then just "ZU" and then I lost the "Z" when I vinyl wrapped the VX last Spring. I'm deciding if I'll add new lettering or remove the logo.

I agree with you Jo, even though Cyrk didn't really seem to care too much when I asked. In the recent scenario, I figured it was more paying for someone to make the sticker rather than paying for the logo. I think it would have been courteous of the seller to ask Cryk first and I'm sure he would have been given the thumbs up anyways.

I talked to the guy selling them, offered to get them made up cheap...as long as Cyrk was OK with it..
..and suggested he made a contribution to the site as its essentially VX forum/family artwork.
No joy... !!

Its more about personal profit from anothers work, that tweaks me.
Its the photographer in me, and maybe I'm a tad sensitive..
.. but taking others work, putting your own 'sample' watermark on it..

Thanks for all the suggestions/opinions so far. The Fuel Anza wheels are still my top choice although I can't seem to shake the Rockstars. I even found a centercap being sold online for the Rockstars without the "star".

http://www.centercapsdirect.com/assets/images/RockStarCenterCapwithNoStarPlainRockstarCapBlack.j pg

These would set me back another $200, which is ridiculous. I'd take a grinder to the stars before buying these.

I'm planning to buy a tire-wheel combo online with free shipping (avoid the taxes and shop fees). I already checked the local discount tire and it would be close to $300 more for the same package. Also, just like when I installed the 35s, I can't just drop the VX off and pick it up with new wheels ready to go. I'll need to clearance the rear wheel well first.

Billy, check out trail worthy fab. I was originally looking into this option for bead locks but the prices went up significantly and many complained about balancing the tires. Still pretty cool if you go with the cut Bajas or Mt/Rs.

http://www.trailworthyfab.com/12-Bolt-Hummer-Wheel-Special-w-TIRE.html

Jo, The stockers do look great in black. I thought they were too narrow, do you happen to know the width? I vaguely recall 7.5".

Triathlete
01/25/2015, 09:32 AM
The trail worthy fab wheels are nice also. The bigger the tire gets the harder it will become to balance them. 37s are right on the boarderline. Many end up using balancing bb's inside the tire.

The stock 18's are actually 7 inches wide. Really skinny for a 12.5, it was hard work getting them on there and getting the beads set.

Plus they have a different offset than the 15X8's that we have our MT/R's on. The MT/Rs stick out a little bit, maybe half an inch past the fenders on my rig. These sit pretty much flush with the fenders. I don't know what kind of clearance you have inboard with your new SAS up front.

I also really like those FUEL wheels you posted. One of my favorite wheels is actually the wheels that come on the Toyota Rock Warrior package tundras. They are 17X8.5, +38 offset.

I like the look of procomp steelies (and they're cheap) but they don't make em in anything larger than 16".

Eric, I figured the stockers were a bit to slim for the 13.50 width tires I have in mind and the positive offset could be an issue with the new front end.

The Tundra rock warrior wheels are slick. I had a Tundra and wanted those pretty bad at the time. It's unfortunate they sell high and are 5 lug.

Billy, I'll save the t-case for next year's project. :drool2:

Definitely the Fuel Anza, 18x9. Your current rims are old school. I like them but IMO, with your mods and your VX's paint scheme, the Anza's will look really sharp with your VX and bring the whole look up to date, so to speak.
