View Full Version : Transfer case nightmare

So a grinding sound was coming from the front passenger side of my Vehicross. While I was at sea my girlfriend took it to a mechanic while my dad discussed the issue with them over the phone. What my dad told me was that they removed the drive shaft, cleaned it up, and replaced it. My girlfriend drove it home and she said the grinding sound was gone. I thought that this was great because my sister needs it for her internship that begins Monday, and ends in august. When I got home on Thursday I found the front drive shaft sitting on the floor in the Vehicross. So I guess what they did was remove the drive shaft and turn it into a 2 wheel drive vehicle.
Could the sound becoming from the drive shaft, maybe a joint, or is my transfer case fried? I don't know a lot about transfer cases, only what I have been looking at online. I'm not sure if I should try to drop it and figure out what is wrong with it, or just leave it alone. The TOD seemed to be working fine from the gauge.

If the sound is gone....
...it was most likely a shot CV on the 1/2 shaft that was removed.
You are essentially a 3 wheel drive now...
..but I'm surprised the TOD appears to be working OK
I'm no expert on the TOD..but my best 'guess' would be the TOD lights
are working ok because the wheel with no 1/2 shaft is simply following the
rotation of the wheels in general..
..and not setting off the sensor by slipping or losing traction etc...
..... thats my wild guess anyway!
New 1/2 shafts are available from SurTrack... for about $50 ish.
These are good for normal road driving and light off road/farm track use.
But are no good for real off road stuff.
Here ya go :-

This is the 1/2 shaft..doesnt sound like you need the whole axle.
Hope that helps

Hmmmmm - not sure from the description if a half shaft was removed Jo. Sounds like the front tailshaft was removed??
Perhaps you can confirm Papi??
If the half shaft was removed, Jo is right on the money.
If the front tailshaft was removed, it could be halfshafts, diff, or transfer case.

Tail shaft sounds more like it. I don't think its the half shaft, it doesn't have a CV boot attached to it. Haha I feel like I've been on Google search for an hour trying to figure out the correct name of it.

Is it the shaft from the T/case to the front differential?

Yes, that's the part they took out.

Thats a bummer..
..because as PK said, that doesnt help too much in narrowing down the issue.
If the original grinding was front pass side..I'd check that 1/2 shaft first.

So I actually took a look at the part(Propeller shaft) they took out when I got off work, I probably should have have done that first. The bearing on the end looked like it went through a rust, and crud filled hell. Does anyone know if this Trooper CV joint would work it looks similar, or where I might find one that does work?
This is the trooper CV joint I found online.

You can find a good used Trooper prop shaft at the local u pull it places. Just need to make sure it comes off a tod equipped Trooper.
Not sure if that kit will work on ours or not. I replaced mine with a trooper shaft. Never tried to pull my old one apart.
