How come this isn't doing the "sign up" for the meet....like it always has done?

Anybody know? Maybe the new software isn't working correctly??

The dates work for me, and I have not heard any complaints, do they work for you Jo? I did call Larry and he said he did book the trailer but did not know the dates he booked but said just to go for the 5/14-5/21 and he would just change his reservations if the dates he booked were different. Other than that I would say everyone is good with 5/14-5/21 give or take some days for those that want to come earlier or stay later.

I think I figured out how to register in this new software.....

Go to "CALENDAR" on the blue banner near the top,
Enter "MAY" for the month, then hit GO
Then CLICK ON MAY 14 CALENDAR BLOCK
It should take you to the event, and at the bottom you can RSVP

SORRY AS THIS REPLY IS OFF SUBJECT, BUT I NEED HELP. First though i am new here and this is what i got. Finally finally got a VX cruiser, only 88000 miles, lifted, new tires, new magnaflow dual in dual out, new secret weapon cold air intake, and all for only $8300. The best thing about it is that i was about to travel to new york to pick one up, but my last search attempt found this one in the town i live. Amazing find. More good new, my neighbor bought a 2001 isuzu trooper with only 140,000 miles from a police auction in Oklahoma. Its been sitting in his driveway for 6 months and now he is selling it to me for only $1000 and it drives like a dream. This all has made for a great start to the new year as i couldn't be happier. On another note, i need spare tire panel knobs, and found a forum saying to ping JASON621 to place an order for the knobs. HOW DO I PING??? Will provide photos of the VX when i get it out of the shop as i decided to go ahead and change out timing belt

FYI, it's very difficult to find an available room in Moab last minute for anytime in May. They will completely book up... unless you don't mind paying $400+ a night.

If you're really considering the trip, I would reserve now and cancel later if need be.

I took my Stock VX up last year, there are plenty of trails a stock VX can do and there are by passes too. The trails are all rated for difficulty and most of the group is familiar with the trails and can tell you which ones would be good for you.

Come and join us, it is a lot of fun.

Trails of ALL levels available, everything from the mildest farm track...to extreme.
Many VX's with stock set ups have taken part..just discuss trails with those that know them..You'll be fine.

BUT..be aware.. be warned..be prepared .. to go home and start ordering new coils/bigger tires..etc etc..

You'll be surprised what your stock VX is capable of.

The bylaws do not prohibit attendance by other makes of vehicle. Nor do they prohibit any specific type of warning device.

Was considering either my good ole VX or brand new 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, ordered less than a week ago (if this dealer honors our agreed upon price). Went through ordering a 2014 Trailhawk in 2014, but walked away when that dealer decided he wanted more than the agreed upon price. Hate the car buying experience.

Will hand it to Jeep for honesty in advertising, though. In their promotional videos of Trailhawks on the Rubicon Trail (http://www.jeep.com/en/cherokee/photos-and-videos/#gallery=video), Lake Tahoe, California, you can clearly see one sustained damage to its front fascia, two 4" dents and a 6" tear, plus lots of front and side scrapes. I have no intention of scratching or denting my new set of wheels or my good ole VX.

I just called and made a reservation from Friday-Sunday. I happen to be moving to Oklahoma from Chicago that next week so I'm really hoping to make it out for a couple of days with you guys! Question though, how often does stuff break (cvs, tie rods) and is it bad for the car to be going over rocks and stuff with torsion bars maxed? (I know it's rough on the backside...). I'll probably take it easy because the last thing I need is for her to break down out there.

We will need to request time off and cross our fingers, but we'll try to get down there this year (and not so late that we miss out on seeing people). Boyfriend is starting a new clinic type job and cutting to part time on his current unit until he starts FNP school in June; we will see if he can get time off. Congrats, you'll love the lockers!!! Let me know if you need any help with the ARBs, I just set-up and installed a new ARB in the rear axle after my last one grenaded itself internally.

Also, have you checked the waterpump for the source of the coolant leak?

I do need help installing the lockers otherwise I will have to take it to a shop and hope they do it right. I will text you and we can set something up.

The coolant leak is elusive because it does not drip from anywhere so I put same dye in to see if I can find it, I can smell it and at high altitude it will cavitate so it is getting air in the system and leaking somewhere but we cannot see the leak.

I got the hitch on yesterday, that was a lot more work than putting one on the Trooper was.

I did put some die in the cooling system, then using a black light I could see a small puddle under the intake, so now at least I know where the leak is I should be able fix it before Moab.

Yeah, I know... I'm late... BUT I DID IT :)

I booked a room from Saturday (14th) to Saturday (21st). I really wanted a chance to meet and see as much as possible this time. I'm staying 2 blocks down from the Apache at The Virginian. So, I'm assuming we will be able to hang out in the parking lot at Apache? Is that the gathering place even for those staying elsewhere? Either way, I'm there WOOHOOOOO. It's almost 1600 miles one way for me and I'm on very fixed income but I have been seriously planning and saving for this trip for about 8 months. I'll be bringing some items that were purchased and of course I'll have some of my family's BBQ with me again :)

Yes I'm interested if it fits the VX. I don't know much about skid plates. Will this fit our VX?

I have one on mine that I got from VX Kat. Needs some slight mod to one of the bolt holes but nothing major.

Sounds good to me. Usually Saturday is a leisurely departure since it is only 6 hours to Moab, but I'm thinking of leaving earlier to allow for the 27 miles of dirt road.

So...as a total NEWB to 'Zu Zoo and "wheeling", I have some questions I hope y'all will tolerate.

1. How does this work in general? Is there a predetermined daily schedule or more like a breakfast meet-up every day to decide what trails to hit? I'll be basing the rig at the KOA 4 miles south of town (unless I can finagle a deal with the hotel to use their parking lot & lobby!), so I'll need to know where to go or how to stay in touch. I'm open to adding some numbers to my cell if anyone wants to PM me.

2. Does the Zoo include venturing into both Arches AND Canyonlands National Parks? Does it include either?!?

3. Any general tips on what to bring fo' sho'? Things that a person might not normally bring along for basic camping (sun protection, bug spray, food & water...gas & oil)

Thanks...I'm super excited to make this event and see some great stuff along the way & back. Time to get #earthboundtravel on another adventure!!!

It's not that formal. The gang always hangs out every evening (usually just in the motel parking lot) and different groups informally form and decide what trails they're doing. Usually the groups are similar skill /equipment level. THere's always a "newb" group and an "easier" trail is picked. usually it's Hell's Revenge or Fins-N-Things.
Tuesday has traditionally been for a "VX only" run that any stock VX can do, but since there's so many VXs and other Zus that come, it's really now just a general Zu group and usually do an easier trail. If there's too many people in the group, we've found it's best to break it up into 2 groups as a big group takes ALOT longer and it gets kind of boring having to wait and wait.
As the week goes on, seems people tend to do the harder and harder trails. Some go on an overnight trail (White Rim), that's farther away.
The evening socializing in the parking lot is quite fun and spirited, and alcohol may be involved.
Usually doesn't break up until past midnight, but you can always leave at any time.

2. Does the Zoo include venturing into both Arches AND Canyonlands National Parks? Does it include either?!?
Does NOT include ARCHES, but there's one trail in Canyonlands (IIRC Elephant Hill) that actually goes into the N.P. NO dogs are allowed in NP so can't bring a dog on the trail in Canyonlands.

3. Any general tips on what to bring fo' sho'? Things that a person might not normally bring along for basic camping (sun protection, bug spray, food & water...gas & oil)
There's a very detailed list of stuff to bring....I'm not sure you can find it searching so I'll post it again here today. You probably could go to a previous Moab thread from prior years, I've included it in them, so you may find it that way.

Thanks...I'm super excited to make this event and see some great stuff along the way & back. Time to get #earthboundtravel on another adventure!!!

Also, plan on bringing a lunch/food/drink with you when you leave in the morning. There's a supermarket down the street and lots of peeps buy like a hoagie/hero/sub sandwhich there. It probably goes without saying, but BRING LOTS OF WATER! (And bring plenty of oil for your VX too.)

It's a very relaxed, informal, jovial group of people with lots of fun and laughing. Some bring some food to eat in the evening, but usually a few people group up and go to dinner somewhere together..."Milt's" is famous for it's great burgers, and there's all kinds of other places. Pizza and Italian are 2 of our group favs, and we usually go with a group.

Thanks so much VX KAT...that helps a lot. I was planning a grand trip of the National Parks around a training in Vegas. I couldn't do it because the remanufactured engine I had to install didn't even make it to Austin and back. Engine #3 seems to be fine, but we're going to do the oil and see if there are metal flakes again.

I own a travel agency and it's the 100th anniversary of the National Parks system. 'Zu Zoo looks awesome, but I can't imagine not hitting those two while we're right between them (I'm getting Mesa Verde in along the way from Dallas,too...then Monument Valley on the drive home).

It doesn't seem like many (any?) others are backcountry capable or willing, but there is a 100 mile loop in Canyonlands called White Rim Road, with the ability for "high clearance 4-wheel drive" vehicles to drive down Lathrop Canyon to the shores of the Colorado.

I'm probably looking at blending things like that and some Arches driving/hiking with 'Zu Zoo events first. That way y'all can teach me how to drive this beast 1/2 as good as it's previous owner Ryan did at Uwharrie! :)

VX KAT
05/05/2016, 07:26 PM
I'm pretty sure White Rim is the name I couldn't recall, it's the one they camp overnight. BigSwede would know for sure, he's done it many times.

ABSOLUTELY plan on doing Arches and Canyonlands...I answered the question if the ZuZoo peeps do a trail there......no trail in Arches, and I explained the Canyonlands trail. There's plenty of time for you to go visit them however.
Arches is only about a 2 hour drive through, if you don't stop to go hiking etc....just to give you some perspective and time planning.
Canyonlands is much larger.

Backcountry capable or willing??? Most attendees are there for the wheeling. Many have been there many times, so they've already seen the sites, but noobes almost always visit the N.P.s

Absolutely do Monument Valley! It's one of the most majestic places I've ever seen. We lived in Plano for many years and loved going to Big Bend frequently....too bad many people don't visit it because it's so far from everything....that made it even better for us! We'd stay in Alpine for a night and some other great towns along the way.
....but when we moved to AZ in '08, and first drove through Monument Valley, OMG, it's gorgeous and amazing! Lucky for me, we have to go through Monument Valley on the way to/from Moab! Double score! We're leaving for home Thursday, if that overlaps with your plans, maybe we can caravan to Monument Valley.

One thing I forgot to mention...usually in the evening there's some wrenching going on :_wrench: ...whether it's new mods, repairs, upgrades or changes...:smack:

Uwharrie and Moab are vastly different terrains, so you'll get to experience something that's found almost no where else! Slickrock!

You're going to have a fantastic trip, no doubt about it! :_steering

TRAIL ETIQUETTE
Trail Etiquette
ALWAYS One of the most common and most commonly broken rules on any trail ride is to always keep the vehicle that is behind you in your rear view mirror. In this way, the group will always be together -- if the person behind you slows down, you should slow down, and this will cause a chain reaction to the whole group. This is especially important at trail intersections. If you lose sight of the vehicle in front of you, let the driver know to slow down -- another great reason to have a CB. This in turn will work its way up to the trail leader and no one will get lost. Do not follow too closely either, especially while going UPHILL. The truck in front may need to roll back to take a different line. When you make it up over an obstacle, you need to wait for the next vehicle in line to make it, so if a strap is needed you can assist. If those below you can't see over the top of an obstacle, let them know when it's clear at the top.

YES! You won't regret it! Definitely something to experience at least once.

KEEP IN MIND: You DO NOT have to tear up your truck to have a ton of fun. Some of the gang go on the crazy trails, some of us more sane individuals (well, that's debatable)...but I digress....some of us go on great trails, with some great rocks, ledges, and the scenery is magnificent.

MANY 1st timers (incl me) went totally stock and did fine. On the Tuesday of the week, we used to go on the "VX Only Run"...but it's now kind of been renamed the "Zu's" only and it's always a trail a total stocker can handle.
My VX was not lifted but did upsize the tires a bit, gained about 1" - 1 1/4" height...and wow, did that little inch make a difference!

BTW, can you tell we have a lot of good fun and laughs while hanging with the gang on the stoop?........
If you come, you can do as little or as much as you want! There's often an "open seat" in somebody's rig that you're welcome to ride along!

White Rim is a wonderful trail and camping experience, but camping is by permit only. Worth a check because there can be cancellations, but you generally have to get a permit months in advance. The trail is roughly 100 miles long, and can be run in a day but then you won't have time to stop and enjoy the overlooks and side trails and hikes. And yes, no dogs allowed. There are doggy daycares in town.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y40/BigSwede/Moab%202012/White%20Rim%20Trail/IMGP0846.jpg (http://s2.photobucket.com/user/BigSwede/media/Moab%202012/White%20Rim%20Trail/IMGP0846.jpg.html)

One alternative is to head up to Island in the Sky, then divert off to the Shafer trail and go down the famous switchbacks. Then you can do a portion of White Rim to Lathrop Canyon, which is a fun little run down a wash to the river...although the view at the river isn't all that much due to the tamarisk. You can also stop at Mussleman Arch and walk across it. Then head back toward town on Potash Road along the river, maybe going up Long Canyon if you have time.

Get the Charles Wells Moab trails guidebook if you don't have it.

Now, as to Arches, turns out there is a 4x4 trail there, I noticed it on a map and a few of us did it last year. It doesn't have a name, but it is pretty fun actually, and of course includes a couple of arches along the way. This is Tower Arch:

Some of us are planning to meet in Denver or Grand Junction and do a mild trail on the way to Moab on Saturday morning. (Denver to GJ takes about 4 hours)
Option A (trail rating 3) - From GJ take Sheep Creek to Gateway Rd. (2-3 hours) along part of La Sal loop Rd., FR 4636 and Sand Flats in to Moab. (3 hours) Approximately 5-6 hours from GJ to Moab
http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=393
Option B (trail rating 2) - From GJ take 141 to Gateway Rd. (1 hour) along part of La Sal loop Rd., FR 4636 and Sand Flats in to Moab (3 hours) Approximately 4 hours from GJ to Moab
http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=356

For those wanting to meet us and take one of these options which one do you prefer? I am open and good with either one, both trails can be done in stock 4x4s.

Jo, I can cover Moonkee night. I'll bring the blender that I bought last year just for that purpose (although I have been using it to make healthier smoothies lately). I was going to start a thread for this years "Ice Cream Social", but it usually just devolves into Moonkee drinking, smack talking and general hilarity. Maybe we should just change the Ice Cream Social into "Moonkee Monday".

It's a good idea...you might not be able to run 4WD low without binding with different size tires...in fact in some cases you might break parts of your drivetrain...and you might need 4lo just to finish the trail. How big of a size difference are we talking about?

Looks like about 1.5-2" difference in Diameter.

BigSwede
05/09/2016, 12:44 PM
So roughly a 6% difference...not enormous but more than I would like. Some of the VX guys will have to comment on how the TOD system would react. On my Trooper I would put the smaller tire on the front and unlock the hubs so the size differential wouldn't bind up the drivetrain, but the VX has all wheel drive and drive flanges, so that isn't an option.

So we are getting close to Go Time:

1) Who is looking to convoy from Denver Saturday morning? We will be having breakfast at the Dennys at 9930 W. 49th Ave. Wheatridge, CO 80033 at about 7:30 AM...anybody want to join up there? I believe VX guy Tyler will be there to join us.

2) Where do we want to meet in Grand Junction? I suggest the McDonalds at Peach Tree Center, 3219 Business I-70 , Clifton, CO 81520. It is just before the turnoff to highway 141. But I am open to suggestions too.

Yep, after doing all of the planning it looks like I will be in Denver early afternoon. I was going to visit Jason and have some things 3D Printed, look around in Denver for a few hours then drive to Wheatridge to check into our room at Motel 6. Along the way I am also stopping in Kansas City to see SCOTT at Jack Miller Isuzu and meet the legend face to face :)

EXCITED :)

I have been driving without a spare tire for a couple of years now (since I NEVER off-road). This thread reminded me that maybe I should bring it. I was also wondering about CB versus FRS. After talking with BigSwede I think I'm going to get a handheld CB and an external antenna so I don't have to borrow someones. But just for info, I don't know much about FRS radios. Which is used most and what is the difference?

CB is the usual mode of communication.

I use a handheld , a Cobra "RoadTrip"..with magnetic roof mount antenna.

FRS uses different frequencies than CB, and is limited to 0.5 watt (basically a "walkie-talkie"). I have been with groups that use FRS and for yakking in a tight convoy they work okay. They are fine for transmitting 100 yards or so but cannot be relied on for more than that.

CB is limited to 4 watts and so has greater range than FRS, maybe 5 miles depending on terrain.

My local Midwest Overland group has gone to 2-meter (VHF) ham radio for greater range than CB, running 55-75 watts can reach out 15-20 miles depending on terrain, but that doesn't do you any good unless the guy on the other end has one too.

So in the end it comes down to whatever everybody can agree to use, unfortunately none are compatible with the other and it is actually illegal to make a radio that does more than one type. As a result I carry 3 kinds of radio in my Trooper :rollb:

The Moab group uses CB.

That sounds like a plan we will meet you at the Denny's west of Denver, I am not sure anyone is meeting us in GJ but we can stop at the McDonalds and have lunch in the parking lot, if anyone wants to join us they can just meet us there.
If we leave the Denny's at 8:00-8:30 we should be in GJ around 12:00-12:30, should we plan to leave GJ at 1:00pm?

Kevin and I do not have CBs yet so we will be bringing FRS radios so we can at least talk to people that have radios and those that bring both.

I guess I can put some batteries in my FRS radio... but you should just get a Midland 75-822 and a magnetic antenna... "installs" in a minute (power from the cig lighter) and you can take it out later just as quick when you don't need a CB.

I was on a trail once with folks that had FRS, CB, or ham. Like to drove me nuts keeping track of which of the three radios to reply on.

I ordered mine today and am having it shipped to the motel. It will likely arrive on Saturday (Monday at the latest) w/ground shipping. I am there all week so if it DID arrive on Monday, it's ok for me. You could do the same but I would select 2 or 3 day shipping.

The Midland that BigSwede suggested is:
http://www.buytwowayradios.com/products/midland/midland-75-822.aspx

The Cobra (comes with the antenna) that Jo suggested earlier is:
http://www.buytwowayradios.com/products/cobra/cobra-hh-roadtrip.aspx

Both are affordable and either can be shipped and received in time if you ordered by tomorrow and shipped with 2-3 day shipping.

Of course I'm sure that there is somewhere in Denver or Moab where you can also buy one.

Lots of places can get them to me before Friday but the shipping is almost as much as the item, some local places have the Cobra radios so I can get them, I was hoping to get the midland 75-822 because it has more features and is slightly smaller. I will figure something out and have a radio for the trip.

CatFish

The truck stop near Kevin's work had a HH-Roadtrip and the Sportsmans warehouse near our house also has the same one so we should be able to get them tomorrow.
Thanks for all the info I would not have known which ones to look for if you guys had not told me about them. We have the majority of the stuff done for the trip, both VXs are lifted, have working lockers and 33" tires, we both are getting much needed alignments Friday and Kevin will do his 500 mile engine break in oil change before we leave. If all goes as planned we will meet Steve, Tyler and anyone else that wants to meet and drive up with us on Saturday morning.

It's cool that the Cobra Roadtrip comes with a magnetic antenna, saves a few bucks. The Midland is a little slicker in that the antenna connects to a pigtail at the bottom rather than the top of the radio, but both will get the job done.

I have the cobra handheld without the magnetic antenna that I use for comms when I'm outside of the VX (spotting, hiking ahead, etc.). I also tend to loan it out when someone doesn't have a radio on the trails. It works pretty well but definitely has trouble with longer distance signals out of the cab. I think the magnetic antenna would be super beneficial.

I found one Midland 75-822 today. We need 2 CBs so we may also get the Cobra with the antenna, they have one at store near by. Only a few days to go.

Hey Folks, I've got a big family suite room booked at the Apache from Mon thru Saturday. Originally I was gonna pick up a friend in Sedona but she cancelled last minute, so now it's just me.

From what I understand it's got a kitchenette and two queen sized beds, although they are both in one room.

So... if anyone would like to cancel their reservations, be roomies, and split the cost...I'm game. I'm asking $40 a night.

4x4= channel 16 (or 4)

The channel we actually use will vary based on congestion. Last year, my Moab wheeling group primarily used channel 6 because it was clear.

Just remember that channel 9 is for emergency only.

I asked the same question in the FB group. I think it's an awesome idea. I saw a Hummer group go into Moab and they had a drone that took some great views of the Caravan of Hummers and I thought that would be awesome to do the same thing with our Isuzus. But from my understanding it's illegal. But then again so is spitting on a sidewalk ;) ;)

If you happen to bring one and use it I would love to see it.

So I made it to Denver at the hotel. Just waiting to meet Steve... and Jason is dropping off some printed items for me. I'm excited

Sorry about the late message but I'm currently in alburqueue and about to head up to Moab tomorrow morning. What's the safest and most cell service covered route with the most places to pull over if I have a problem? I'm thinking 550 from albuquerque to shiprock which seems to have the most cell coverage and civilization, but then I'm a little concerned about how barren the area is for like the last 4 hours. How well traveled is it? If I break down, how long would it be before someone showed up? lol
