Uh, it is a GM 4L30E used in a number of vehicles and happens to be built in France.

Ok now... does anyone here have ANY familiarity with the differences or similarities between the 4L30E (http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpowertrain/transmissions/4l30_main.htm) and the 4L60E (http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpowertrain/transmissions/4l60_main.htm)? I guess I can get RIGHT to the point on this subject... here we go with dreamin...

Everyone here knows the situation I am in with my VX and my motor. I am looking into alternative motors for a possible transplant surgery. At one point, I was looking at the possibility of the turbo diesel (TD) but during thta discussion, we decided that the transmission in our beloved VX really wasn't rated to handle that torque. Does anyone know which tranny they use in Isuzu TD applications? The transmission to motor bolt pattern looks to be different from what I have seen in the pictures of the 4L30E picture... it actually looked more like the 4L60E trans-motor mounting pattern.

Anyway, to spill the beans... I am being a little gung-ho to possibly find a V-8 replacement. The motor of my choice is an LS1... in case your not familiar with that motor, it is the one used in the Corvette, F-Body (Camaro and Firebird) as well as many truck applications (4.8L-6.0L). I can pick up a barely used (these motors last a LOT longer than the 70K miles that VX motor went) LS1 from a Vette off of eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33615&item=2450514748) for $3000 grand or less... I can pick one up from an F-Body for even less probably.... or even cheaper if I go with a truck motor (more low end torque). I can probably pick one up already mated to a 4L60E for a reasonable price. The retro harness is $499 from Jeg's and a PCM will run about $150. I also have connections to a person with plasma cutters and welders... as well as the ability to do some custom fabricating.

One of my big questions is... is it possible to adapt a 4L60E to the TOD transfer case? Anyone know what kind of output the 4L30E has? Number of splines? How the TOD and tranny actually mate? I will be getting under my VX ASAP... but not sure how quickly that will be as I end up working from the time the sun comes up in the AM until after dark at night! I know this can be done, but I need some help with research issues as usual. I am familiar with the LS1 motor and its abilities and so think IF I transplant a different than stock motor into my VX... THIS is the motor for me. Doesn't matter what motor I put in it... if its different, its different... and that means custom fabrication.

I guess I'll need to start another thread along the way... I'll make sure I link this one to it WHEN that happens.

I look forward to your input. I know the knowledge is out there. Thanks in advance.

Coach!
