Ram Air Induction

Just a continuation from the CF induction inserts....

I met with one of the techs at the speed shop tonight and we talked more on the actual design of the under-hood mechanics of the air porting. He pointed me in the direction of those fake intercooler look intakes for imports like Civics and Accords. I did some soul searching online tonight and found just what he was talking about.

This particular one has a reusable filter so it would be pretty ideal as far as it's use. Mounted just under the scoop, the air will flow through the filter (catching much of the debris and moisture!). From there, I need to figure the vaccum line to the airbox. That will just take some simple measurements and fabrication of the line. Actual mounting of the filter box (as shown in pic) to the hood will be the pickle here. That all depends on the space between the hood and the engine. I don't have any measurements on the one above, but if that is too large, one will have to be fabricated. Still, not a difficult task in my opinion.

Anyways, just keeping the few that are interested updated on the brainstorm that has been keeping me up all night tonight. I definately plan on spending some R&D $$$ on this one till I get it right. Hang in there with me. :)

I remember those... they were really played down, even in the Honda Prelude forum where I once resided. I'm sure they work ok, I guess they was a bit of a "rice" factor. I would think in a situation where this design was functionally neede (possibly ours with the ram-air hood), it could be perfect!

You know the Whitney.... probably the best place to look for cheap, quick junk. ;) Although, I dont recall that bit being too cheap. I think it was around mid $200.

Anyways, it's all still brainstorming. The search for better designs still continues.

Here's an idea: remove the pipe from the side and use a hole saw to attach it to the center in the back. Use a short S-bend to run it directly to the MAF, which you'd have to mount directly to the intake manifold. Hmmmm....but how to make it fit when opening and closing the hood..... :confused:

Executing the port out of the rear of that filter box is exactly the plan. Only thing is, going directly to the MAF from there is a bad idea. Too little moisture will be block without an inline snorkel/drain pot. Using that intake air box and also the stock box appears to be even safer than just stock alone, even with a high flow fliter in the intake air box. Less debris, less moisture, and more cool, fresh air!!! Idealy, the filter box should be just under the intake scoop and with as little porting possible to the engine though.

Doing some more brainstorming here. Just a few quick renders of what sort of system I am aiming towards. This is just concept so be forgiving. It will need to basically work as such, with it;s design, and actual mounting and size is quite unknown until the insert is in-place for exact dimensions.

Impressed and excited to see where this goes. I put a deposit on the WRX scoop style insert, hoping we can make this ram air idea happen.

I go on vacation for a week away from the board and things get crazy!?!? We've got carbon fibre inserts available in stock and in a scoop version, ram-air intake designs to go with CF scoop insert, and I saw a fighter jet side intake possibility in another thead. Creativity has blown out of control in less than 1 week. Oh, I almost forgot Joe is planning a complete hood replacement possibility. Kudos to all, man I missed alot. Good job Gary with the ram air research.

Water won't be an issue if you add a bypass valve made specifically for air intakes. They only cost about $40 but are worth the investment. AEM offers them and they work well. Good luck with the design.

Have you thought about getting a Weapon-R Dragon Intake (http://www.weapon-r.com) and then using the ram air kit with the CF Hoodscoop?

Once the hood actually arrives and i get it in place, I will start designing the physical ram air. I currently have the HotShot intake and am willing to mod that to work with this system if need be. Right now, it's still hard to say WHAT I will come up with. STill need that insert in my possession..... *sigh*
