Hey all, I've been around this community for a while but I've been in the background. I love my VX I've had it for about 4 years now. I've improved the lighting, put on some bigger tires and pumped up the volume (stereo mod). Ifound mine in a used car lot, told my wife I found my dream truck and ...... WOW she said lets go buy it. I've been thrilled ever since. I have had some check engine issues but still not enough to make me get rid of her (The truck not my wife). I need to be more involved with the sight than I have been. Looking forward to chatting with everyone soon.
Sidenote: My truck and I are the ones on Youtube, "Vehicross fun in the snow" should get you there. The best little truck I have ever had the pleasure of being in.

Sooo... I finally found my dream buggy after holding out for 6 years. I, too, have been doing my research on the web and ghosting here on the site for real-life owner stories. After seeing a lifted black VX in Lincoln NE in the early 2000's (anyone on here by chance? You made this dream last, by the way...), I've been wanting and seeing the dream bubble burst over and over. Alas, I finally got to live the dream. As they say in 'gone in 60 secs' "Its his unicorn, man!"
The wife wanted an SUV, I wanted a VX with a burning desire. One day I'm scouring the web and turn to the missus... "Hey, look what I found on ebay!"
Two weeks later as of 03 April, we're trading places on the way home every 60 miles so both of us get seat time in Yazu, our 'new' Kaiser VX. Ahhh, what a blast!
Anyhow, perhaps out of place here, I'm looking for options on a bull bar and cargo rack. I've done lots and lots of red eye reading here with a little head scratching to the likes of, 'is this going to be a custom job?' It looks like it had a roof rack at one time but some bloody fool took it off long ago. Also, I see most of the posts are from yeeeears ago ('04ish and back). What kind of options remain for lift kits and add-on goodies for a new owner? I was planning on doing intake and exhaust work, but luckily for me, the last fellow did it already, overly evident when I turned that key over for the first time. "Rarrrroooom!" bwah haa haa haa!

I've had some good luck recently scoring some used OEM roof racks (the 2 cross members and 4 towers) for fellow VXers. If you want I can add you to my "list" and let you know if I come up with one. The going rate is roughly $350 + shipping. This thread will explain it....

Dare I suggest it, but as I've bummed around the search button for many an inquiry, are these the type of things us MacGyver types can craft with aluminum lengths and some crafty bolts and clamps? The more I looked into the baskets, I see the importance of having that dastardly rare OEM mounting system. Right now I'm prodding the Missus for approval to buy tires, so I'm banking on the rest of the maintenance parts are swappable with other Isuzu models, which sounds about right if I am to trust in ye faith of the ZuZu gods of the vehicross.info forum. I'm a research junkie and must wave my admiration flag in the wealth of information on this boat! (That's the cue for the rest of y'all to take a bow!)
Thanks for the reply!

Howdy folks - yep another one from New Zealand!
Had a Mazda Bounty 2WD, and was getting rather brassed off getting stuck where we sometimes venture (off-road racing). Since I only used 1/4 of the usable space of the wellsider, it was time to let go of the torque monster and set sights on something different.
Saw my first VX a year ago and thought hmmm, ageless.... but what the hell is it :_thinking
Found out about a month ago it's called the VehiCROSS so the research began... and 4 weeks later I'm the proud owner of the Green JDM and she's all stock standard! (hehehe - wait till I'm getting my freedom on this one...)
First day at work:
Boss: "what the f**k is that thing outside" - closely followed by another yelling "who parked Kermits Wheels in my spot"
One hour later (and the loss of "some" traction) I silenced the ultimate critics.
One week on and my partner has turned from "ugly" to "I want one too"....:bgwb:
Cheers VX-ers - - - - you've created another 2 addicts.......:yesy::yeso:

I'm an old Isuzu owner (both been driving for a while and am old myself, hitting 62 this summer), but a new Vehicross owner (but not driver yet) as of early April 2010. I've been lurking in the buyer market for a while, but not finding anything satisfactory. Then up popped up a 2001 high above the Cow Palace near San Francisco. Banged up in the front left corner, my motto has been throughout my life that "I can fix that!" Crumpled hood and fenders and unibody pushed in a bit, but otherwise reasonably all there. I'm at risk a bit with the engine, as the AC hoses got pushed against the serpentine pulley so I couldn start it, but the price was right and I have time. We will see how this turns out. So now will be lurking for parts, or in the worst case scenario, I might be advertising parts here on vehicross.info.

Hello everyone!
You know...they say there is something about "love at first sight"
So there I was, no BS no lie...I was just outside the main gate of Ft. Huachuca in Sierra Vista AZ and I see...this "thing" coming from the rear behind me, a yellow two-door thing with what I thought was the slickest spare tire mount...I said under my breath "That's a strange looking Amigo..." And that was that for at least a year...
Years later while I'm browsing the net at my usual hangout, Wikipedia, I was looking at rare production cars, starting with the GMC Typhoon...and that's when I stumbled on this "Halo" car...and when I saw the article I immediately had a flashback to that hot Arizona day and my brush with this awesomely unique vehicle that I now had a name for...
Fast forward to this last friday, me and a few buddies at work are talking "car" and we happen to bring up the VX...and it gets me to thinking..."Just out of sheer morbid curiosity, I wonder if there is any VX's for sale?"
In fact there was about a dozen on sale around the country...and as if someone special was smiling on me, there just happened to be one for sale only 15 miles from where I lived.
So like a junkie, I start trying to absorb as much as I can about this vehicle before I set out to take this very seldom chance to actually see and experience this ride. I was sold after the test drive the dealer let me go on by myself. So after the bank sends the dealer the check, I will very shortly be the proud new owner of a '99 Astral Silver VehiCROSS...

I was looking for a pic to show him and found one for sale in Aberdeen (yes the home of Nirvana the PO told me he dated Novoselic’s mom;eekb;)

I bought a '01 Kaiser and I have a friend driving it home across country. Back to CO where off-roading starts about a block away from my house. I bought it from a dealer, who got it at the auction, and I have traced his roots to a forum member from '03-'09, Medman. Besides the remote doors from the factory, there's a few aftermarket accessories: SuperCharger, Roof Rack, Safari Rack, Brush Guard, Off-Road Lights, , Nerf Bars, Hitch, Power Moonroof & air dirverter, double din screen, DVD CD Amps Sub & False floor, Backup Camera, 3 inch lift, new Cooper Zeon LTZ 18, Pro-Comp Off-Road 16, Aftermarket Rims for each, Hood Scoop (that needs to be functional and backwards facing), Vent Visors, Momo 3 spoke Steering wheel, a couple of RAZO shift knobs I want to get rid of, Carbon Fibre Trim. Don't worry, I'll can still make it my own. It might be by taking things off rather than adding them on. I'll have to start a de-modding thread! Could use a GPS if it doesn't already have it. The mufflers is shot so I want to add a SuperTrapp. Maybe a hitch step to protect the back cladding & access roof easier. I saw a good transmission hump can holder. Some of the lights on the dash are light or non-lit, including the rear wheels on the TOD, but it feels like AWD is kicking in. So TOD would be a nice addition as well?

Hey Guys,
When we first saw a Vehicross, both my wife and I thought as Moncha did, that it was the ugliest P.O.S. that we'd ever seen! However as we were looking to buy a new car the Jeep/Isuzu dealer that were shopping at, told us that if we bought a Jeep id would be in the Shop all the time: but if we bought an Isuzu, it would probably never see the inside of the shop; except for regular service! So, none of the other Isuzus compared when it came to the features of the VX: and the longer we were at the dealership the VX went from U.P.O.S.on the planet, to the coolest ride ever and we were hooked.
We had the VX for almost ten years and just sold it a couple of months ago to a guy in Colorado, who flew down to pick it up, that works at a car dealership and had always wanted one.
We are now driving a 71VW Bug as an interim vehicle, waiting for our Mobil Home in Merrill,OR to sell so we can buy a new Loaded Mini Cooper S. My back is really bad and I can get into a mini without bending when getting in and besides they are the fastest production car, hp per pound, and they get the best MPG of any gas car next to the Hybrids. Besides that I think they are the "Coolest little car on the planet" and you can't turn one over: unless you are a ?

OK guys and girls, It's like Capt. Jack Sparrow said....."I'm in the market...."
I've been driving a 2k Yukon for the past few years, but the kids I have hauled around are now driving themselves. (don't need the bus any more) The VX got my attention when it was introduced, but was out of reach and made no sense at the time.
That being said, does the VX make sense as an economical mid-life crisis? I'd love to get everyones comments, especially from someone who has a lot of time in the VX and the Tahoe/Yukon.
Oh yea, love the site! it's just what I need for research.

Troy,
Welcome aboard. Hope you survived the flooding without too much trouble. My sis lives in Brentwood so I've been kinda keeping tabs on the situation.
The VX isn't extremely economical. It probably doesn't do much better in gas than your land yaght. It is a helluva lot more fun to drive though. I wouldn't say that the VX is overly expensive to own & maintain (especially if you do the wrenching yourself). Where it'll get you in the wallet though is all the upgrades you'll be wanting.

Let me clarify my statement - more economical the a 911 Porsche :smilewink- and thanks for the welcome.

Oh, by that comparison ... we're friggin WalMart.
Don't worry about comfort, you'll be having so much fun driving it that you won't even notice that you're uncomfortable. Just kidding. The Recaro seats are actually very comfortable but the ride is somewhat harsh & the rear visibility is ... well ... it ain't.

My name is Nick and I received my 99 vx on Jan 4th, 2000. My old man bought it as my first car and I drove it for 10 years. I just recently bought a newer vehicle to relieve the workload on the isuzu. I have right at 130: miles on it. It's silver with the red/black interior. I was amazed when I read the how to's and tech tips. I now have answers to the windows, abs light, cd changer stuck, shifter key lock and the water coming in under the dash!
I already fixed the cd changer last night and plan to tackle the rest. I've done all the work on my isuzu since we bought except a wheel bearing and timing belt (the only $600 i've spent aside from tires, fluids filters and pads in 10 years! I plan to do new front rotors soon cause one is warpped.
As my handle implies, I have a special place in my heart for volkswagens and have used my isuzu to tow them all over the place. I love the excellent VX design and comparative simplicity to most other newer cars. I have been recognized all over Chattanooga by my car. I had a guy who went to school with a girl I dated recognize me last week and say ' you drove that silver isuzu thing'.
My brother in law is a trooper guy (trooperchris on some forums) and I went with them to Uwharie to go wheeling a few years back. I plan on going again in the VX. I look forward to following this forum to keep my
isuzu on the road.

I'm Dave. I live in South Louisiana, work at a web development firm, and am engaged to get married this November.
I guess about a year or so ago a friend of mine bought a VX and the little lady and I fell in love with it. It's been the dream ever since.
About a month ago, she was hit and the insurance company totaled her car, giving us the perfect excuse-I mean opportunity to scout out a VX for our very own.

I just purchased a 2000 Ebony this past weekend, and within 24 hours of purchasing it, I had it on the trails of Joshua Tree National Park (photos - http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/showgallery.php/ppuser/4136/cat/500). It drove like a champ!
I've been a fan of the VehiCROSS since I first saw one. After turning in my FJ Cruiser company car about a year ago I found myself missing the option of hitting the trails, so I set out to find a replacement. I've been looking for a few months, and finally found one I liked at a price I could afford.
I've also owned an Isuzu Impulse RS, and my brother has had two of the first-generation Troopers, so Isuzus have been in our lives for a while now. I've even driven an Isuzu Stylus in an SCCA endurance race at Willow Springs Raceway (video on my YouTube channel - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-D3r0sYK9xo).
I'm looking forward to several years of enjoyment from my new toy!

Well, after two years of searching, I finally bought ZEUS's VX (thanks again kodiak!), and I could not be happier.
I have been a fan of these "beasts" for many years and finally owning one, makes me even more in that direction! I am decidedly a fan of the rare and different vehicles (I own a 2nd gen MR2 as well), and adding this vehicle to the collection is a great boon. I am not an off-roader, so don't expect me in Moab any time too soon, but do expect to see this on the streets of SLC. I just now need to figure out the check engine light so that I can get my plates!

Hey all.
Just bought our (first) VX last week off ebay.
Bone stock 1999 ebony with Black & Red interior.
Love this vehicle.
quick question...
I live in Canada and exported the VX from the U.S. to bring it up here.
Now the Canadian Government's Registrar of Imported Vehicles wants me to make some mods to the truck to make it street legal here.
Primarily, I need to have daytime running lights and the speedo needs to have metric speeds on it somewhere.
Has anyone seen or know of a way to do these mods or is there a post somewhere that I missed that might describe how to get these done?
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Forum member "Kenny" is in Canada and I'm sure he could tell you how to get that all done. There's also a few other Canadians.... Hiredgoon, mikemol, mrtew, maxg765...and several more, maybe PM some of these owners and see if they can give you suggestions.
Hey which Ebony did you get off ebay, was trying to look it up and see whatcha got....but I can't find an ebony sold in the past few weeks on ebay...just curious...

Yeah... I just contacted the previous owner about that today...
My 15-year-old asked what it was for and I told him it was for the Nitrous system:winky:... seems the previous owner's husband used to tell her the same thing.
I haven't figured it out yet, I'm guessing it was used for fog lights or something that was later removed and they forgot to take out the switch...

Oh yeah, I remember that one. I talked to him and tried to buy the roof rack. Talked for over and hour, asking me a million questions about the VX and various issues.

Hey all,
I have had my Astral Silver 99' vin #0180 for about 4 years now. I am in the Army and out of those 4 years i have been deployed for 2 of them. I Just replaced the Mass Air Flow Sensor, ABS speed sensor, cleaned the EGR, replaced the intake manifold gaskets, replaced the flex-pipe, muffler, 4 new Cooper Discoverer h/t. I Love this thing. Some of the things i need/ plan to do are:
1. The hood release cable froze and now i have it rigged so it is coming out of the hood in order for me to be able to pop the hood.
2. Cladding needs some loving, but i cant decide if i should use Back2Black or Forever Black
3. Need to buff the headlights
4. Going to install a sunroof (would love to do T-Tops but the wife says ewwwww)
Anyway after reading this forum for the passed 2 years or so i have read a lot of cool stuff related to this site. Glad to be a part of it finally.

Hey gang. New guy here. Bought my VX back in 2000 or thereabouts... it's a '99 in silver. She's in pretty good shape bodywise, but about 3 years ago something went a little wrong under the hood. Thrown rod maybe. Anyway, needed more money to fix than I had at the time. So she stayed garaged ever since, until... yesterday. Took her over to a local tuning place where they can take their time with her without any pressure. Figured while they're in there, might as well do it right. ;)
Anyway, just came here for some ideas and WOW did I get more than I bargained for. I spent the last hour or so just looking at roof racks. (I'm the proud owner of an OEM Wing Bar setup, and I have the ski rack - need to do bikes next.)
So yeah, that's pretty much it for now. I don't have any recent adventures with the ol' girl, as she's been in stir for 3 years. But I gotta admit, I can't friggin' wait to get her back now that she's gone.
I'm not going to do much off-road with her, so I'm open to all kinds of performance tuning tips if anyone has some.
Cheers to all my fellow VXers, oh ye of peculiar taste in vehicles! ;)
Ciao from NY,

Hello from Phoenix!
We just replaced a '00 Rodeo with a '00 Proton Yellow VX that has some mild front damage.
Feels a little like going bass-ackwards, but these VXs are just TOO fun! Really lookin' forward to enjoying our new Urban Assault Vehicle... should be all good in just a couple days.
I was an autobody & paint tech for over 22 years, but my spine gave up on me. I had major lower back AND neck surgery, so I move a little slower now... (I just might have as much cobalt steel & titanium in my back as the VX has)
Previous owner tried re-gluing the weatherstrip around the headlights and did an extremely bad job of it...
Does anyone know if that is a part that I can get new, from Isuzu? I don't think I can get all the glue & silicone off of these to reuse.
Once she is back in one piece, I'll try to get a pic or two posted.

ok so i guess i've been posting on here about a week now. i've been a member on here for a few years.
anyways! my name is dave and i've got a 99 astral silver vx. i've had it since 02. ever since then i've been in love with her. i live in boone north carolina. at the moment i've got a few problems with it. but they are the first actual engine problems i've ever had with her except some brake and starter hiccups.
one of the things what i've always wondered and i'm always asked is, why were they only made for 3 years? i wasn't sure if it was a limited thing or what. that would be pretty cool to know if anyone has the answer.
a funny story.
i was at a gas station in johnson city, tennessee probably a year ago. i was getting gas and i was inside paying when i saw another silver vx turning the corner. i'm guessing they saw mine at the gas pump and turned into the gas station. i was walking out and they drive by my baby very slowly and then drove off.
i also was at the tampa mall back in 03 or 04 and in the parking lot was another silver vx. luckily the parking spot right next to it was open so we pulled in next to it. i thought it might be funny when the own of that vx came out and might get confused. unfortunately i couldn't stay to see their reaction.
to this day i am still asked what it is. pretty much every daysomeone says something about it to me. it never gets old haha.

The one trouble I've had with my VX is the transmission/driveline clunk. After using low gears coming down a hill (or parking garage), I'll get a very hard 2-3 shift during normal driving. Park the car and the problem is gone in the morning. I know I've seen some threads here about similar issues.

Hi-
Welcome to the VX madness! The windows binding and messing up are probably the most common problem with these trucks. The plastic clips that hold the glass upright break, just like yours apparently have. A former member (SBC) designed and fabricates metal replacement brackets that solve the problem of the tabs breaking, as well as solving the binding and jumping the track problem for many. He sold his VX last year, but he still sells the metal brackets. http://www.streetboutiquecustoms.com/vx.html
I put together a post with numerous threads pertaining to the window problem, it'll give you background on the issue and how various owners have tried to fix it. Most believe the SBC brackets are the best solution. I'd bet he's sold 75 of these sets by now!

Hey guys! Hopefully it's not too much of a faux pas to post in here without a VehiCross in your possession, but I'm not sure where else to post. Essentially, I'm a 17 year old (going on 18 in 9 days) who has fallen head over heels in love with the VX. I'm already saving every penny I earn, selling my previous vehicle (a 1995 Wrangler), and even selling a large chunk of my possessions in order to realize my goal. The reason for my fervor for this one particular vehicle (which I'm sure you all share) is that in my eyes at least, it is a tremendous value for its price. I was looking to replace my YJ with something safer and more comfortable. I was looking at TJ Wranglers but was discouraged by the high price-tags. I remembered the VX and realized it fit the bill perfectly!
On a more pertinent note, I am very impressed with the spirit and attitude of the members here. Everyone seems helpful and friendly, and it feels almost like a team effort. I'll probably be making a donation to the site later this month. Sorry about the wall of text, but I tend to be a little too verbose when introducing myself.

Hello all!
Just purchased a '99 Ebony on Saturday. Did a bit of lurking last week, and you guys didn't manage to scare me off, so I bought one, and now I'm back for more...
She has 86k, and although I picked her up from a dealer, I think i got a pretty good deal. Engine seems sound so far. No leaks (monitoring oil levels carefully), no apparent transmission issues, TOD is functional (and handles steep gravel with ease), interior is in great shape, but...the cd changer is dead...no surprise there, and rear drivers-side speaker is blown (might need a tutorial on how not to damage the 11 yr old panels).
She's bone stock except for the Ranchos...not sure what to make of that, and haven't had the chance to dive into any of those threads yet, but judging by the cost of replacement OEM shocks, I think that might not be such a bad thing...
Like several other new members, I need a keyless remote, and some tips on how to program it without an original to go by. I'm also in need of some wheel cover toggles (3...or a clever alternative. I've been toying with some simple ideas that might work).
I've also started looking at the threads on rack mods, but it looks like I'm a little late for the OEM boat. I guess i'll just keep my eyes peeled for the next round (hopefully there is one).
I'm excited about my new baby and I can't wait to cut my teeth on some of these great how-to's.
See you around the forum!
PS...if anyone else is in the Southern Appalachian Mountains (I'm near Boone, NC) besides me and Brainwashed (who i just introduced myself to), chime in...I'd love to meet up sometime so you guys can put me to shame!
PPS...I'm not a mechanic by any stretch, but I'm a decent troubleshooter, and I'm eager to learn, so please bear with me if I ask some stoopid questions. :o
PPPS...dealer pics will be posted asap...

Hi gyrus, welcome!
You can upload a pic as avatar when you are silver status (contribute $20/yr), gets you extra space for pics too.
Many find the OEM shocks was too severe on the kidneys, :yeso: and switched to after market....I switched to the Rancho 9 way adjustable, I'm happy with them. OEM are good too, just know you'll be getting a very stiff ride.
Keyless remote-
available at several places....no longer available from Isuzu though. Ebay also often has them. Usually between $30-$50. I think one member (Marlin) just got one from a junkyard...so that's another possibility.
I have the CORRECT programming instructions (after getting 2 stupid, ridiculous versions! LOL) and can PM them when I dig them up. They're real easy, takes about 2 minutes max....and half of that is from having to practically stand on your head up under the driver's side foot well trying to push the green button...:laugho:

Wherever you get one, make sure you're clear if you're getting an OEM ISUZU, or a generic one...sometimes it's hard to tell in the wording. Here's what the OEM one looks like. The top button does the doors/security, don't think anybody has ever gotten the 2nd button to do anything...

My first 2 I bought were pretty banged up, but I finally got a "like new" one on ebay. The Amazon seller above says it's like new condition, if that's important
Knobs for back panel:
A member who owns Street Boutique Customs (screen name SBC) fabricates metal replacement knobs, and, more importantly, also sells metal brackets to replace the plastic brackets that hold the door glass on the bottom. The clips often break, and this almost always fixes the "binding" windows problem most VXs have. Probably at least 50 of us have the SBC metal brackets installed. Both of his items are listed on this page:

Kat I honestly don't know how you have the time to write such detailed responses to questions that have been asked (and answered) so many times. I'm not against answering old questions again since the answers do change over time, but my advice to you new guys is to get acquainted with the search feature. It takes time to learn to use it effectively, but if you do you'll find a wealth of information (and pics) that will provide you with a more comprehensive answer to your question.
Welcome to the addition... er... forum! ;)

hey I'm Nate...first VX I have owned...it's a 1999 Ebony black...they are hard to find! and at the right price!...over 6-months...finally this one appeared 5 miles from my house...I am a Jeep guy and own a 1999 Jeep Wrangler sport that was my daily driver...but it is set up for class 5-6 trails in Moab and for sand duneing at the Oregon Dunes...plus occassional trips around Idaho, Oregon, Nevada to off-road...I love my VX!....like an SUV sports car! Natasha the Jeep is now covered in my RV parking waiting for her next trip off-road....

Just wanted to stop by and say hello. I have been a long time admirer of the greatness that is Vehicross. Finally I was able to pick up a silver 1999 model. I am in the Dallas area and look forward to getting together with the local contingent. Also just 1 question, the Vehicross I bought has several little issues I would like looked at. Who would be the foremost expert to work on them in this area? The check engine light is on, ABS light is on, Blows fuse for dash lights and tail lights the moment you put it in, windows on both sides messed up(I tried the lithium grease to no avail), and just want all the diff and tranny fluid and filters changed. Anyway look forward to meeting all of you and getting into the club.
Thanks

Hello everyone and thank you for providing this forum. A week ago we were looking for a third vehicle and came across this cool looking black thing. Test drove it and without knowing much about it, bought it. It is fun to drive and fun to learn about. I do have a question, I need to take it in for an emissions test but cannot find the connector. I know where it is supposed to be but it is not there, any hints to where it might have gone? Thank you in advance.

DL, welcome to the family. You'll find that there are a bunch of helpful folks around here, a couple of crazies and one or two ornery cusses, but everyone means well.:biggringr
Which plug are you looking for? If it is the OBDII port then that should be located under the dash down by the hood release on the left side of the steering wheel. You may have to squat down and look way under there because it's tucked up there pretty good.

MS, thank you for the quick reply. I found a picture online where the connector is supposed to be and when I go out and look at this one there is an empty rectangular space with no connector. When I look up under the dash there is no loose connector that looks like it should fit there. What do you think happened to it?

I would think that that pesky thing would have to be up there somewhere. Does anyone know if you can just cut the OBDII port off?
You may need to take some of the dash apart to see if the connector has been stuffed up there somewhere. I just can't believe that it would be gone.

One question though - California has annual smog tests. Are all VX's equipped to pass CA emissions? Or do they have to have a special CA package?

This may sound very weird to most of you, but I just saw my first VX last week. It was Yellow. It was in the employee parking lot of where I work. I did not know of the existence of the VX until now. I immediately fell in love with its stylings. For a vehicle that began production in 1999 it was sure ahead of its time in that aspect. I currently own a HUMMER H3. Now, I would like to pick up a VX for the stable. I'm currently looking. They are few and far between though. There are only 6 for sale within a 300 mile radius from me.

Being so new to the VX world & "kinda cheap" can be a very worrisome combination....so check the questionnaire carefully for some of the known problem areas and see if you can get all the info you can from the seller.:yeso:
There's absolutely a ton of knowledge on this forum, and you'll be able to get sooooo much info before you buy. Between search and asking, we'll fill ya up with all kinds of good info!
You may want to post info on the one (s) you're looking at, as many members here know or know of the vehicle and might be able to impart some info. Don't think anybody has snipped a VX this way (and hope they never would) so I don't think you have to worry about that.

I just did a check on KBB to see the PP value and it says that a VX in good condition with this mileage is around $5485. His price seems a little too high now.

Another thing to keep in mind- if there's another VXer in the area of one for sale, you can ask them to "check" it out, we do it all the time! Just post it up and ask if anybody's in the area and can check it out.

I bet you're referring to the 2001 Foxfire in Mass with 35k. Been watching that on Craigslist for probably 2 months now. Call me crazy, but I'd take the 2001 low miles, over the '99 Kaiser with 130k.
Have to keep in mind I'm a bit biased, since I selected an '01 Foxfire, over a '00 Kaiser.......but other than my color preference, I do have some logic to my choice.....but each of us have our own priorities/reasons.
One main issue is there's been some thought that the '99 engines have more problems with oil consumption than the other 2 yrs.
Our recent, very unscientific poll (http://www.vehicross.info/modules.php?name=More_Polls&file=viewpoll&pollid=170) doesn't solidly support that, but does seem to indicate the 2001 has the least amount of oil consumption. One specific point I note is that there are zero (0) entries for the 2001 yr burning 2 quarts/1000 miles.
There's also a poll on model year engine failure:
http://www.vehicross.info/forums/poll.php?do=showresults&pollid=58
In that unscientific poll, the '99 did have the most engine failures, I believe, most, from oil consumption issues.
There's also been some posts (perhaps you've seen them) where a few members researched this issue extensively. "Iamironman" apparently did a ton of research and says there was some change made to late 2000 engines to address the starvation issue. There's also some dispute about that as well, but here's some good reading:
http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showthread.php?t=16157&highlight=built+2000
http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showthread.php?t=17137&highlight=iamironman
iamironman went on to do an engine swap with an '02 Axiom engine and says he has no oil consumption. http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showthread.php?t=17137&highlight=iamironman
Regarding price......the $14k price for the '01 with 35k is certainly top top dollar! I paid $10k for mine 20 months ago, 64k. I'm guessing it's been for sale so long because they're not budging on the price. BUT....if you could get it for less than that, my personal opinion is that would be the best choice.
ON THE OTHER HAND.....we're not handy and can't do "mods" or repairs, so lower mileage and lower chance of engine problems was much more important/desirable to us....but YOU may have that skill, like so many do here, and the '99 might be fine. There are certainly MANY MANY examples of high mileage VXs on this forum that are running like a top well into the 100k+ and even a few 200k (deermagnet comes to mind). These have all been well maintained and owned by knowledgeable owners. They've been treated right, and their VX has treated them right in return.
I think finding out as much as you can by way of records, service history, autocheck, professional inspection, ANY INFO, etc...is really important on ANY VX. Good luck in your search!
There's my 2 dollars worth.........
oh, man, whatdaya mean it was supposed to be 2 cents worth? :goof:

I painted 'em on the VX. I tried a little paint to check 'em out and ya definitely need primer. I just used the only primer I had on hand, Rustoleum rusty metal primer. Then the next day I used gloss black Rustoleum. I used a 1/4" artist's brush.
I wanted to use liquid mask, but was surprised I couldn't find any at a number of local hobby and craft stores. I was just real careful and when I got some on the clear coat, I wiped it up with alcohol. I'm thinking now the liquid mask woulda been hard to apply in some areas and then hard to remove, so if ya take your time I don't think it's needed.

I went to look at twistedsymphony's VX today. Its the first time I've sat in the VX. I expected it to be cramped seeing as how i'm almost 6-4. It wasn't too bad. Just not alot of headroom for me. I probably had 1.5 to 2 inches max. The interior was in incredibly excellent condition. The exterior on the other hand shows signs of alot of wear. There was alot of rust on the undercarriage (to be expected on an 11 year old car I guess). There were also little rust spots all around the body. The Vehicross emblems on the sides were taken off and it didn't seem to have been used in months.
I hope if twisted comes back to this site he doesn't get upset about me posting about the VX. It was mostly expected wear for a 99 like I stated before. He had put an aftermarket muffler on it that sounds badass! I'm going to seriously think about it while looking at some other options. My wife would drive this vehicle too and she feels a little uncomfortable with the 130,000 miles. I don't however. I just don't feel comfortable paying what the asking price is for the condition of the exterior. I like my cars looking very nice on the outside more than the inside (I know that sounds weird). I would spend alot of money to fix up the exterior if I bought.

H3,
I would highly suggest you extend your search to find a VX that has not spent it's life in New England... ;)
I grew up in Chelmsford, Ma (not too far from you) and therefore, my autobody career started back there. So, I have worked on my share of rusted vehicles...
Not only do you get the rust spots on the body, but what I really hated, was quite often, the small 10mil bolts would get rusted and when you tried to take them out they would snap right off. Then your drilling and extracting, sometimes tapping new threads, etc...
Moving out to Az and working on vehicles that haven't been cursed with the rust "cancer" made a huge difference in how I viewed used vehicles... and our beloved VX's definately fall into that used category.
Good luck in your search!

x2. There are a lot of southern and western VXes out there that will be largely rust free. I suggest that if you really want a nice VX, be patient, and stash away $500 so you can fly to whereever it is you find a nice one and drive back. And a lot of us on here are willing to go look at VXes for other members, so if you find one somewhere, let us know and whoever is closest might be willing to take a look at it for you.

A guy here in town is going up to Michigan tomorrow to pick up an 01' Ebony with 80K miles for $8000. He was waiting by my VX last week when I came out of work with his wife and said they had been looking for one and didn't even know there was one already in town lol. He was sad because he thought he would be the first around here. He's driving up not flying though (which I would do if you can because what if something breaks on your way home that you don't expect, be nice to have a ride). Like I told ya in my PM, the right one will find you!

Hi. My name is Chris and I just purchased a 2000 Ebony. Apparently it was a Florida police interceptor for the first couple years of its life. Carfax records seem to support this along with the blackened right side reflectors! I stumbled on this VX 3 weeks ago looking for a jeep. I said to the dealer "What is that thing..its Ugly." He said "Yeah but you watch how fast it sells." Then I said "It looks like a big roller skate or something"..... Odd how it grew on me.

Just goes 2 show that the imagination is limitless and the VX is an amazing canvas to work with. I spotted my first VX 2 yrs ago sitten at an automotive shop i about broke my neck & wrecked my car. I went back the next day and asked what the heck is that ? And i want it !!! Well the owner of that VX was out of Country.....go figure. As luck would have it I worked at a car dealrship at the time & had my boss dig one up for me so off to the auction we went. By 5 pm the evening ol' Black Betty was mine! wham balam ! I will never owen a car again. I'm glad i found you guy's looking forward to talking trucks, trading tips, and swapin mud. Red

Yes the addiction was quick. I have been bored with Jeeps and this vehicle has the short wheelbase bulldog look I like. As for the Police interceptor the right front and rear quarterpanel reflectors are blackened, there are Police interceptor badges and the vehicle picked up 75,000 miles in the first 2 years of its life. I kind of think it is genuine except that it was registered to an individual. So my question is "do they sometimes register unmarked vehicles to individuals so that the plates are not marked to a municipality" If anyone knows the answer please respond. It pleases me somewhat to think that it may have received fleet maintenance. Chris.:happyface

Be careful what you wish for. After looking up a previous owner of my 1999 Ironman that was registered here, I was dismayed to see he drove almost 9 mos. with a leaking intake gasket. Several folks mentioned it to him, but he was always content to throw more "carb clehaner" in the tank and take it back to his "mechanic". Same problem month after month. Just never would listen to the knowledge of the group.
Though this was before the shop manual was made available for downloading to all.

Hey Sam. Chris in Fort Myers. How are you marrying a Chevy engine to the isuzu trans? I'm interested in knowing.
I got the rear end you shipped. Thank you...but guess what. On the advice of 3 seperate mechanics i did this and it did not fix my rattle/grind. Now I know that those who read this will think I'm not so smart but I was under that VX a dozen times yanking on U-joints and so forth trying to nail it down. Last night I crawled underneath again and bingo - I found some play this time in the front U joint of the rear driveshaft. I also can get instability that I can feel and hear when I grab the north and south halves of the drive shaft and yank it around where it telescopes (from the splines). So I went up to the auto parts store and got a greasegun and greased the heck out of that joint and the drive shaft. Today the rattle is less audible but there. I think I found the problem. New universal soon. Do any readers have any other thoughts other than looking to the bearings in the transfer case.????
Ebenezr
09/10/2010, 08:52 PM
For those who would comment on my rattle grind. It resonates at its worst when backing off the excellerator at about 40 -45 MPH. When there is neutral load on the drive train. I pulled the hub locks off last week to make the front free wheel. It had no effect. Mechanics were convinced it was a differential problem or a bearing in the rear axle. One thought it could be in the transfer case. I always thought it behaves womewhat like a bad U joint but could never prove it by feeling for play or slack in the joints. Well any thoughts are appreciated. Especially if anyones knows of common reasons that are unique to the VX.

You can use a Fiero adapter but you would still need a way to control the 4L30E, I think he is changing transmissions too as the 4L30E wouldn't last long behind a V8. I plan on doing a similar swap down the line and I'm gonna use the Isuzu MUA5 manual from a 2.8/3.1 V6 truck

Mine is a full driveline swap - 5.3L CSB (iron), Turbo 400 transmission, Dana 300 transfer case, going to Dana 44 Scout solid axles, ARB's, alloy shafts, new rotors & discs. Only a couple more months (years?) of work left. Once we got the rear tires mounted (37" Wrangler MT/R), had to lengthen the trailing links. So geometry is getting reworked now.

Rock on!
Picked it up today! The good:
1) ONE OWNER VEHICLE. The person that I got it from was the original owner!
2) THEY HAD ALL THE SERVICE RECORDS! Every fluid change, every tire replacement, everything. I was a bit wary of the windows, but @ 53k, they had the window regulators and run channels replaced! The receipts right here. They even have the PDI report and the window sticker!
3) No accidents. Ever.
4) Seats not torn
The bad:
1) Idles kinda high. I'll take a look at that tomorrow.
2) Condensation in the front head- and fog lights. Not a biggie as I am going to bake them apart to install HIDs in the headlights, and I intend the replace the bumper fogs w/some Hellas modded w/HIDs, as well.
3) 6 disc changer doesn't work. Not a biggie as I'm planning on installing a CarPC @ some point.
That's about it. I'm pretty pleased w/the purchase and the mileage (82k).

After reading 18 months of posts by the previous owner of my VX complaining about high and erratic idling, it turned out to be a leaking gasket. Not sure if it was intake gasket or head gasket, but it costs quite a few bucks to replace those because of the labor involved. Might consider the timing belt and water pump at the same time to save on labor costs. Just a thought.

Thanks for the tip, Sam. The previous owner told me that it just started, so they replaced the TPS sensor yesterday, right before I picked it up. I'm a DIYer, so I don't mind getting my hands dirty. If it's a gasket issue, I'll knock them out myself.

My best friend passed away and left me his Vehicross. He was the second owner and in helping him research and decide which one to get I got Vehicross fever and almost sold my tricked out Jeep Cherokee to buy a Proton Vehicross.
Sanity returned when I realized the VX wouldn't be as good a kayak hauler as my Jeep, so I installed a pair of Recaro knock-offs and called it even.
I have been a "car guy" since I was 10 years old and hung out with my father when he entered his 1951 Ford Victoria mild custom in various car shows around the country. I have even been professionally involved in car restoration, specializing in auto trim. I currently have two 914-6 Porsches, one a street legal race car that is scary fast, the other a comfortable tourer, and the aforementioned Jeep. My first passion is sea kayaking and I have kayaked N.America, S. America, Europe and New Zealand.
I first showed my friend Jim the Vehicross when it was on the auto show circuit in 1996[?] from a picture in Autoweek. I think we both lusted after one from then but he was the one who got it and now it's mine.
The first owner lived in the upper midwest so it has some pretty serious
rust going on under the cladding, will be looking for advise on that later.
My biggest issue right now is finding a combination switch as the turn signal lever is broken and dangling. If I fumble around with it I can get the signal on but I'd really like to either get a new one or fix this one.
I've already put on new wheels and tires thanks to Little Laurie's trial and error with her many sets of wheels and tires mine look great.
I have already bought Bilsteen's a Magnaflow muffler and K&N airfilter a new
sound system with powered sub. Want to install a rear door popper but am trying to figure out the best kit to get. I also have purchased a Westin bull bar and Hella lights and now just need the time to install everyting.
I'll go post a request on the parts/modifications threads asking for help location that combination switch

I just flew out to Ohio to pick up my '99 VX. I got to know her pretty well on the drive back to Austin, TX. She's got a few issues that we will have to fix, but overall I am very happy with the purchase. ~134K
I started working on cars with my Dad as soon as I could hold a wrench and always wanted to learn as much as possible. I never wanted to be one of those women waiting on the side of the road for help... or one that got taken advantage of with car issues. I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty and I look forward to learning all about the VX.
Hello to all of you!
I am super excited about joining the family! :bwgy:

Figured that out quick ;)
hi, i'm nino and new here. wanted to get a vx since they came out, just couldn't afford it at the time. went on cars.com and found a 2001 for 6 g's and got it. always loved the vx. just has the regular wear and tear, window issue and body/light fading, about it otherwise it's in mint condition.
nice to be on a great community, lots of great info on here, so all those little wear and tear issues will be gone by spring time.

O.K., so I have wanted a VX for about 6 long years and as of yesterday I finally brought home my very own Proton. So far it has a bit of an issue but to be honest I just don't care. No other vehicle on the planet looks like a VehiCROSS and to this day I can't imagine what it would be like not owning one. Needless to say I've been dreaming about this since the first day I saw an Ebony almost 6 years ago. And I can truly say that I am in love.

I've had mine for about a year and still smile everyday. You're just down the highway and we'll have to get together soon.
Lots of great guys and gals here to help you with whatever issues you may encounter. Did you pick up the Proton from the guy in Rye, CO?

No I picked mine up in Westminster, CO. And since you and pbkid have mentioned a meet and greet thing, seems like the COVX'ers need to get together. And for the highest success rate and easier on all of us and our wallets maybe we should do the meet after the holidays. Totally OT but I had to throw it out there.

Wife was our original VX owner... now it's me. She thought it was cool (still does) and loved it being a billy goat in the snow after driving a front-wheel drive car in New England and having to call me to pull her car home with my Avalanche. But after a few years and very few miles of driving just a short distance to work and back, she got way tired of the hard jouncy ride. In late 2009 she bought a new car, so we were up in the air for what to do with the 2002, 58k miles Foxfire... but not for long. I decided to transfer, re-register and keep it. So between that and the '05 Avalanche, neither of us is getting stuck in ANYTHING, ANYWHERE! I torsion-lifted it about 2 inches in the front, and jammed 2 rubber truck coil spring extender/blocks in two places of each of the rear springs, but it's not enough for the back. I'll read more on this thread for how to get that right, cause I think I want to make this lil' beast a 50/50 on and off-roader with some aggressive "33's that aren't too bad on the road. Looking forward to being more active on this board now. - BPA

BPA - got pics of that pretty Foxfire? :D Also would be nice to know the last four of your VIN, I've got a little Foxfire registry that I try to keep up to date with the member name, location, and status of each one we come across.
Welcome to all our new members! :)

Hi everyone, don't have one as yet but have been considering a VX for a while now, hope i have posted correctly and look forward to loads of info and chat, cheers Bob & family :winko:
Hello folks. I picked up a 1999 Silver VX this evening. Unique, somewhat esoteric, yet purposeful vehicles have always had a soft spot in my heart and I've been a fan of the VX for years. More than that, the community aspect is something I really appreciate when it comes to cars, racing, bikes, etc., and from what I can tell, you have a super supportive and enthusiastic community here! I'm very much looking forward to being a part of it.

Hi All,
Just bought a 1999 VX 3.2 from the UK, but i live in the mountains of Austria, can't say how much i'm enjoying it and how many looks and questions i get about it.
I do a fair bit of motorway driving and as it has LPG/Autogas conversion this car is perfect. But where it really comes into it's own is in the snowy mountainous conditions, I've fitted top of the range winter tyres and it sticks to the road like glue.
All i can say about this amazing car is WOW......
Can't stop driving it with a big smile.

Hi,
I'm just about to get my first "Vehicross" !
It's reasonably low mileage (60,000) so I was wondering at what point the cam (timing) belt might need changing?
Many Thanks!

Hi Paul and welcome to the wonderful world of the Vehicross. If you are new to the VX you'll need to get hold of a pdf of the owner's manual. I'm sure that someone will point you in the right direction for it - I can't remember were I got mine but don't buy it, it should be free. You might even find a link on this forum if you use the search feature. The bottom line is the timing belt doesn't need to be replaced until 100,000 miles unless its had a hard life then it 75,000. But you'll find that sort of info in the user's manual.

Hey all! well, you will quickly deduct from the lack of "VX" in my nic and no pictures of 'my' VehiCROSS, that I do NOT own one......YET.
I have dreamed of it since 1999. I have come closer to owning one lately than ever, yet it has slipped thru my hands again. (I will post it in the "FOR SALE ELSEWHERE area)
Funds are tight right now and I'm rollin' in my 99 Jeep Cherokee Classic...which I am completely in love with. BUT, my TWO dream vehicles are a cherokee (which I have wanted since I was 18....21 years ago!) and a 99 VehiCROSS.
I WILL have one someday. Right now, I just cruise through your forum and see the pics, hear the stories, see the love you have for your VXs. I'm like the orphan kid outside in the snow, pressing her nose against the glass so i can see inside to the family eating christmas dinner.
Okay, that's a little dramatic. But I DO envy you all.
My husband and I run an offroad club (since 2007) that is also a Christian Outreach. We have mainly *yawn* Jeeps and I enjoy being the 'odd one'. Although I now have my Cherokee, I used to be the 'black sheep' in a lifted 2005 Xterra. I got razzed all the time. but I wheeled it well.
I just wanted to stop in, say hi, and post up the one for sale near me. I hope I get to join you guys some day...with my own VX.
God bless!
WELCOME
To all y'all new peeps that's joined up lately......

Name's Michael. I am new to owning a VX, but not new to wanting one ever since I saw the concept vehicle at an auto show way back when, then being filled with joy upon learning it was coming out, then sad when learning the price. Im 30 now, back then not nearly the income to spend 30k+ on a vehicle. I also like supras ( another rare great vehicle ) and owned one for a while, moding it to over 500hp, until they stole it. I could not bare investing in another supra to likely get stolen again and decided to check current VX prices. I purchased a Proton 2001 VX w/ 94k on it about 6 mo. ago from out of state w/o doing an inspection, it has turned out good so far. I am looking forward to getting it to top condition, unfortunatley parts are hard to come by ( at least cheap ), I know an Isuzu parts place that imports from Japan and got some new trim peices that needed replacing, nice but costly. Im in the miami / kendall area and looking for good info for my VX, which brings me here.

No place besides e-bay for custom parts? I wish ToneMonday had not closed, I heard that was a great place for VX parts.
