No place besides e-bay for custom parts? I wish ToneMonday had not closed, I heard that was a great place for VX parts.
Unfortunately he passed away suddenly and has been missed so much by the members of this Forum that knew him, respected him, and considered him their friend.

eBay and here are your best bets for mods. There are still sources that make some things (real skid plates, logo stickers, cargo boxes, etc.) so we can point you where you need to go for that stuff.
What are you after? Or are you still in the dream sheet stage?

Hello everyone,
I took possesion of my VX a few months ago , I must say the attention it receives is pretty wild , I brought it up from Orlando Fl .. I'll just say I'm trying to find another lol. I'm originally from Madison wi, owned and operated a motorsport dealership, bad economy changed that! :(. I come from an extreme motorsport background , so 4x4 culture is new to me but .. Hey have to start somewhere , I'll try to get pics up Nice to meet you fellow VXers I look forward to learning from you , Eric

Hi there!
I've been lurking here for a while as I pursued a worthy VX. Same story as many of you... I have admired and desired the VX from afar since it's concept days, but the price was a bit much. As prices declined (and engine reliability reports escalated) I decided to dip my toe in the waters, provided I could find one that had a reasonable chance of being around for a bit. After a few failed attempts (and at least one psycho seller on Craigslist) I finally stumbled across Mike down in Richmond, VA and bought his excellent '01 Dragon.
I'm thrilled to say the least.
I'm just going to treat it gingerly, monitor the oil consumption religiously and enjoy the living hell out of it.
Also have a Chrysler Crossfire. I'm thinking about cutting up both cars and making an amalgam car... The all-new Chrysuzu "VehiCROSSfire!" Ta-dum-dum! !!

:yesb: Yup, the silver one was the one I originally locked in on, but the seller was, um.. difficult and pretty unrealistic. I needed to post a reply to a VX for sale here and just plugged in the info for that one. Soon as I figure out how to edit my profile, I will. :-)
Tom, I will keep a lookout for you. I had already decided on the vanity plates for it, but DMV falsely got my hopes up of getting them at the same time when I registered it (even after I warned them we have emissions requirements up here that might gum up the process. Sure enough, it did. :::sigh::: Another trip to the DMV. Oh, joy).
Thanks for the warm welcomes and always remember...

I GOOGLED VehiCROSS immediately upon arriving home and you all know what happened next... :drool2: I spent every minute on ebay, GOOGLE, and Yahoo until six days later when I bought my 1999 astral silver VX!!! :smilewink Now I devide my time evenly between working on the VX and learning how to use this site! :_steering Who has an Ebony in Phoenix? What are you thinking about doing to the VX? I'm always finding new projects for my VX but your right you have to be creative since there is little support from 3rd parties. You can always browse the gallery for new mod ideas... you'll be surprised how many unique VXs are out there.

Had wanted to own one since its intro in 1997 but.... Finally brought one in from Japan in 2008 (RHD JDM). Mileage was only 58,000. Well taken care of by previous owner. Owing to unique rule here in Singapore, this SUV cannot be legally registered for road use. I have been driving it around using trade plate. If I am not wrong, this ought to be the only Vehicross in this little island.
Hope to take part in off-roading.

Hi everyone!
First time post, long time lurker. I just purchased my first VX - a 1999 Astral Silver w/ 170,000 miles. Living in the Chicagoland area, it's pretty fitting that I make the purchase on the coldest day of the year so far (windchill of about -10 so far)
The previous owner (or two) were members of this community. In fact, I'm going through the VX Workshop manual CD purchased off Tone's old site as I type this. After I mentioned this website and some of the things I learned about the VX here, the previous owner finally decided to sell her to me instead of some of the other candidates. According to him, the other buyers just kept saying things like 'wow, this thing is so cool...' as he walked them through the test drive. So - thanks to everyone here for helping me get a leg-up on the competition!
The previous owner did follow most of the suggestions found here, including keeping the EGR clean, replacing the PCV often, and keeping her full w/ clean oil. With a garage full of high-mileage cars, he seems to have a pretty good history of keeping cars alive.
Alas, she does suffer from some of the ailments I've read about here. Both windows do bind, the headlights are faded, there's a squeek/rattle from the AC/Heater fan, the cladding is pretty faded, and I just found out the FOB doesn't lock the doors correctly (but the alarm works!). I plan on taking her to the doctor/garage over the weekend for a thorough checkup and then off to the detailers to deal w/ some of the easy cosmetic stuff. None are show stoppers, thankfully.
Although I'm weary of the high mileage engine, for the price, I really couldn't go wrong. Immediately after making the transaction, I took her to the gas station to give her some of the good stuff, and got on the highway to see what she's made of. Smiles all around.
Anyway - I look forward to officially being part of the VX clan. Like many of you, I've always wanted one of these the first time I saw one (at the Chicago autoshow in my case). I have a penchant for unique automobiles, and I love the enthusiasts who appreciate them as well.
Thanks for the time - I look forward to the addiction!

HI GANG, I am a certified automotive nut job from way back. I am probably older than most of you but, still move and sound young. I have always owned way too many cars, as many as 7 at the same time. I have been a Real Estate broker for over 30 years. My son is a auto nut job too! I offen refer to it as a disease. My grandson can idenify cars going by and he is only four.
Since the real estate industry is so slow right now and I need to feed an addiction; I just decided to get a dealer's license. What is this that without one I can only sell 3 cars in a year? So now I own 4 Vehicrosses as well as 20 other misc. cars and SUVs. Most are for sale or will be for sale. Myself and a much younger partner/detailer/mechanic are starting to know these vehicles well. We purchase, go over, make repairs, add HIDs, back up cameria and change all fluids and super detail each one we get our hands on.My partner Anthony loves them too and enjoys working on them.
I am currently driving a FireFox that I transported from Maine to Colorado. We are in Ft. Collins/Loveland. It is absolutely beautiful and is one of the few I have seen with a sunroof.I would upload you folks a picture with this letter if I saw a way to do that. :)
I would like to purchase more VehiCrosses, I told you I have an addiction, and we are thinking of a parts car etc. We even are thing of bringing them back from the grave. If I can be of help let me know. 970-412-8414 RICH

I saw the VX concept at the Atlanta International Auto Show and loved it. I really didn't think they would build it, or if they did, the production version would look nothing like the concept as is so often the case. But they did. Unfortunately I did not have the $30K at the time to get one and then they quit selling them. Nevertheless, I finally made it happen and found this beautiful 2001 Ebony VX with super low miles in Tampa and flew down and bought it.

Every time I see a Vehicross going down the road, it's like spotting the Lock Ness monster. Now, I just have to look out my window because I finally have one! Only one problem... Driving home from the dealer, the temp started to rise so I pulled over as to not damage the vx. The dealer installed a new radiator, thermostat and water pump before I got it so something is still wrong. The dealer towed it back and is now replacing some water pump components free of charge and will not cash my check until I am fully satisfied. I am super excited to get it back and lift this puppy.

Welcome to the madness,Shawn. Be absolutely satisfied with the vx - and while you are at it, before you drive the vx home, check the oil level. Many vx's have a history of running bone dry and failing. An important test.

Well I guess I shall introduce myself with my story. About 4 months ago or I was driving down the road and glanced at a vehicle I had never seen before and I loved the way it looked as it drove by, so I whipped my less than a year old red Rx8 around to chase it down to see what it was. I caught up to it after a few minutes of weaving in and out of traffic and speeding "just a tad" to catch it. After coming upon it close up I was sold no matter what it was. I didn't see any badges saying what manufacturer but I read "vehicross" down the side. After that I went straight home to do some research and then decided after an hour or so of looking at them that I HAD to own one.
The next day put my Rx8 up for sale and sold it a few weeks later and went on the hunt for a vehicross. I could not find ANY near me for sale and the closest one was a 10 hour drive away. Disheartened I let it pass by and hoped one would pop up near me. Two months or so later one pops up only 5 hours away! It was on ebay and the minute I saw it I called them up and made and offer. A few days later I drove to see it and was sold on it right away. The test drive went great and had no problems and no weird noises but while pulling back into the dealership the check engine light came on my heart just sunk. So we called a mechanic and had him bring a computer out too see what was wrong and he found it was just a bad o2 sensor and so he said come back in an hour and it will be fixed so I left and came back and it was all fixed no engine light nothing. We made the deal signed the papers and I rode off the lot on the way home happy as can be with a new vehicross! but less than 20 miles down the road my transmission went out! just stopped working completely and could only coast into a parking lot to stop. After stopping the whole car went up in smoke. I was so upset at that moment I didn't know how to express myself. I immediately called the dealership back and tried to be nice and just said "well I didn't make it far" and continued on to tell him what happened. After telling him everything, he said he was going too have it towed back to the mechanic and have anything that was broke fixed free of charge and have it shipped back to my front door within a week. So I agreed that it was a pretty good plan. I waited for the tow truck to come and pick up the car then went on home.
Later that week I got a phone call from the dealership telling me that it was the mechanics fault! While replacing the o2 sensor he messed with the transmission fluid lines and did not replace them correctly so all the transmission fluid ran out in the 20 miles and after running out of fluid the transmission just stopped. So he said they replaced the fluid and replaced all of the lines just to be safe and checked out the transmission to make sure nothing had been damaged and he said everything checked out fine. So 2 days later the vehicross is headed to my house and it arrived at my front door this afternoon (Christmas day) at 1 PM. What a nice Christmas present! So after quite an ordeal I am finally the proud owner of a White 1999 ironman vehicross!

Personally, I'm an Amzoil fanboy (OK, more like fat old man than "boy")
Also, there are a lot of Mobil 1 & Royal Purple fans around here.
There are also some of the persuasion that changing to synthetic is the worst thing you can do...for various rumored reasons.
It all boils down to who's adverts you believe, what you're comfortable with, co$t, etc...do a few site searches on "oil", "oil filters", & "PCV valve" for MANY more opinions...:yesgray:
Also, change the PCV valve every other oil change, (some do it every oil change) & use a good filter, Mobil 1, K & N, & Pure One are among the favorites around here.

HI FOLKS, I HAVE BEEN AN AUTOMOTIVE NUT CASE FOR MANY YEARS. I RECENTLY DECIDED TO ENTER THE AUTO DEALERSHIP BUSINESS AFTER BEING IN THE REAL ESTATE BUSINESS FOR OVER 30 YEARS. I AM STILL IN RE BUT WITH THE ECONOMY BEING AS BAD AS IT IS AND BUSINESS IS QUITE SLOW; I WAS BECOMING QUITE BORED. I LOVE CARS AND THE VEHICROSS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. MY PARTNER AND I LOVE WORKING WITH THEM AND I HAVE ACQUIRED 4 OF THEM. WE HAVE ALREADY SOLD TWO SO I HAVE HAD MY HANDS ON SIX. WE GO THROUGH THEM AND MAKE ALL NECESSARY REPAIRS. INSTALL HIDs, CHANGE TO SYNTHITIC OIL, CHECK ALL THE FLUIDS, MAKE ALL THE WINDOW REPAIRS, AND INSTALL BACK UP CAMERIAS. WE ARE BUSY SELLING AND BUYING VEHICROSS'S. I AM CURRENTLY DRIVING A FOXFIRE THAT I HAD SHIPPED TO COLORADO FROM MAINE. IT IS TRULY A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE. MY PARTNER, ANTHONY AND I HAVE GOTTEN QUITE GOOD AT FINDING PARTS AND MAKING REPAIRS.
MY RESIDENCE IS IN LOVELAND CO AND THE DEALERSHIP, DETAIL DRIVEN AUTOS IS IN FT. COLLINS COLORADO. I LOOK FORWARD TO MEETING THE LOCAL MEMBERS.

Hello all...new owner here, unfortunately for me not the new driver!
After looking long and hard for a vehicle for my son, about to get license, I ran across the VX. Hadn't seen on in a long time, bought a Trooper new in '97 and remember seeing info about it at the dealership. Did a couple weeks worth of searching/bidding on line with no luck. Was getting desperate as this was to be a surprise Christmas present.
Actually had to start considering a Jeep Liberty!!
Anyway, on my way to work last Monday and I happen to see one at a tire shop. Called up when I got in and asked if it was for sale, guy said it was the owners and he'd ask.
Owner has had it about a year and a half and after I came by agreed to sell.

If the drivers at your son's school are anything like the ones at my son's, you may want a little extra protection for the rear end. Search this site on SuperBumper and see what a few of us have added. The search function is on the left side of the home page.

I was shoveling snow the other day at work and saw the most beautiful creature riding on a flat bed tow truck being dropped off at MY Service Department! a 1999 Isuzu Vehicross? Had no clue what it was so I started my research. I was and am 100% in love with this strange animal called vehicross! Unfortunatly the engine was blown and the tow truck driver quickly realized he was in the wrong place and left. So I began looking for one! Here is the cool part I had a New customer come in Days later inquiring about the all New 2011 Nissan Juke a small 1.6 ltr Turbo AWD that has the same concept vehicle look. This customer had a very sad story about a black vehicross that recently died and had to get rid of! I Worked very Hard to find them their new Juke and for my troubles they GAVE me there Vehicross! I have to be the Luckiest guy I know even if it needs an Engine. So I am organizing the Axiom Engine swap as I type!
Wish me Luck!

Hello There!
I'm Tom. Currently researching and on the hunt for a VX.
This would be a DD for me so I can retire my Miata and start to build it into the Autocross car/Mountain road toy I have dreamed up. It will be my third Miata race car, my first that I am building.
Anyway, I live just outside Atlanta and will be buying in the next 2-3mo.

The search function on the home page will be a great help to you. I searched on 'new buyer' and came up with this thread:

There are quite a few owners in your neck of the woods so you may want to contact them if you need any help.

 OH MY
You need to read up on the oil consumption issue asap...We all check our oil at EVERY FILL UP, and carry at least 1 qt with us at all times.
Yours sounds like mine.....Mine doesn't consume any UNTIL I do long highway drives of over 5 hrs....then it consumes about 1/2 qt per 8 hrs. I just did a 3,700 mile road trip and had two longer driving days of 8 hrs...both days it gobbled up 1/2 to 3/4 qt. ....but the 4-5 hr drive days none was consumed. Go figure...:_thinking
Also MUST CHANGE YOUR PCV VALVE at every or every other oil change...
do search on "oil consumption" and PCV valve and you'll find a ton of info.
Here's some of the threads on engine failure, oil consumption, polls, experience, etc....

Well I think my research and "hunting" for a VX is over!!! =D
I'm not getting one.
After reviewing my research I thought, "OK so some VX's have oil issues but about 1/3 have no issues at all, so no big deal (just find the right one) and not great millage but I can live with that."
Then I thought, "wait, just the fact there IS an "Oil Consumption Poll" is a red flag and mpg seems less appealing when I would be spending so much loot on petroleum products so often.
Checking my oil every fill up and getting 11-13mpg is insipid for a Daily Driven vehicle. That's a toy, IMO. That sounds like as much work as maintaining my 2 stroke Odyssey ATV or the 71' VW Westphalia I had. Which, the Odyssey is way more fun to off road with and a whole lot less expensive to fix if I roll it ;) Besides I'm just wanting a 4WD vehicle to get me to work everyday and up to my cabin with less effort.
But thanks for the info and happy motoring.

That's why we welcome each new member to the 'addiction'.
The VX isn't a perfect fit for everyone ... but most owners would never be caught without one in their driveway ever again.
Hi Everybody,
Robert here from South Africa. After spending the last 2 years dreaming about importing a VX from Japan or the UK (we drive on the lhs of the road here), a mate of mine stumbled accross a '00 VX already in the country (the only one as far as we know) up for sale. Well, taken by surprise, we jumped at the opportunity and subsequently bought it as a joint venture. So I am now a very pround owner of a Firefox red VX :bgwo: Yabadabadoo!
Unfortunately the previous owner had little respect for the VX and abused the interior somewhat, which means we need to find quite a few parts, some of which cannot be sourced in the US as this is the JDM. Anyway, I am really excited and looking forward to getting it back into showroom condition.
I am an Isuzu fanatic and now own 4 of them (well 3 1/2). I have 2x '98 Trooper's (one standard and the other modified for competition) and a '00 3.2L V6 Supercharged crew cab, also modified.
I look forward to chatting to you all.
Cheers

Nice looking VX Impi! But you don't have a Foxfire VX... that color was never produced on the JDM models. Looks like you have one of the these three colors, although it's hard to tell in the picture.
Code 745 - Raspberry Mica - 5 produced
Code 756 - Radian Red - 19 produced
Code 808 - Brilliant Red Mica - 10 produced
Of course that's assuming the PO didn't repaint your VX. If not then congrats on owning a really rare color!
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the welcome and the info.
VT_Maverick, I took a look at the colour code on the VIN plate, and it is 872. Any idea what the colour code is?
The vehicle is still the original colour and has not been repainted.

Interesting, according to the color guide 872 is a red and was one of the main colors offered on the JDM VX (which seems to mesh with the reported production number of 125). MH I've heard the color "Red Rock Mica" as well, but the Wikipedia page indicates Leadlock Mica. Maybe it's a typo? Too bad I don't know Japanese or I'd translate the color guide text myself.

Thanks, already finding tons of great info. No, I bought the one from Stan's Auto. I didn't even know about the ones in longmont until today, never saw them on CL, Autotrader, or cars.com. I didn't check ebay either, I needed to go to a dealer since I didn't have cash. Although, I got mine for a lot less than he's asking.

$6500 is too much for 144K. And yes, the 3.5 engine was used in several other Isuzu models and clones (Acura SLX) so you can harvest another engine if you need.

Looks like my first task at hand is to work on the passenger side window, as it needs help going up.

Shawn,
Hope you do end up in a VX. Not many TN members. I came from the Upper East part of TN years ago. I live in VA but make it back to Johnson City several times a year (last weekend actually).
The home page has a search function on the left hand side. You can use that to find lotsa info like "New owner questions" or "potential buyer questions" or "replacement engines".
Good luck with your search.

Some of you already know me from my post last week regarding advice on a troubled VX I wanted to buy, but every time I log in the forum keeps telling me to introduce myself in this thread, so I will. For those I'm not acquainted with quite yet, my name is Kat...it's a pleasure to be here! Though y'all can call me MeowMix, since there's already a Kat here, and I'm not going to hijack her name, lol. ;)
Now for my VX experience...I first saw one years ago, passed by it on the street. It was a proton. I thought it was the most bizarre, awesome thing I'd ever seen, though badges were all shaved, so I didn't have a clue what it was. I scoured the internet to try to figure out what it was, but to no avail. I didn't see one again for a while yet. Eventually, about four years ago or so, I finally caught one parked, where I could get a good look at it. I was in love ever since...though my boyfriend at the time was disgusted with them, which killed the idea of ever obtaining one of my own (we lived together and finances were shared). To make a long story short: He took off for another woman, I went through some rough times, and now that I'm back to having a moderately stable life, let the XV pursuit resume! I'll find my perfect proton in due time...for now though, my '05 silver 5spd Sunfire will have to do.
This place is fabulous; everyone is so helpful here! I'm definitely a talker, so expect me to be around frequently, lol.

Hi all,
First, I want to thank everyone who has helped me find a VX that I could adopt! You folks have been amazingly helpful! I am so glad I found this site!!!
Now for the happy announcement... I am the one who bought Joe Isuzu's Dragon Vehicross. Well, "bought" sounds so cold and heartless... this has been much more like a "rehoming" I think! The VX itself is still finding its way to So Cal via a transport truck, so I haven't actually set eyes on it yet, but the deal is done. I know Joe is going to miss it, so that tells me that it has indeed been loved.
As for me, like so many others, I happened across one in a parking lot years ago, and the obsession has just never gone away. I love "unusual" cars, and have already discovered that I have absolutely no luck with "practical" ones. So, when it came time to find a 4WD/AWD, the obvious, practical choice would have been a Subaru. But, those are such nice little cars, I really couldn't bring myself to inflict my bad karma on one. (In another thread I believe I have mentioned how two brand new Hondas died the day I brought them home.) So, when I remembered the VX, the search was on. I had to have one. Thanks to the folks here, I think I know what I am getting myself into, and I am thrilled to take the plunge.
There are a couple of other threads here where members tell what their previous cars have been. I loved reading that. So, by way of introduction, here is my automotive resume...
'72 Pinto - with modified carb. Got it to 120 mph once.
'77 Pinto "Cruise Wagon" - very fun for a Pinto.
'81 Lancia Zagato - OMG was that a fun car. Didn't even know how to drive a stick when I bought her, but I learned fast! Put about 170K miles on it before someone convinced me it wasn't "practical" and I basically gave it away to the mechanic who had taken care of her.
A Saab, Jeep CJ-5, 89 Alfa Romeo Spyder, and a couple of Suburbans were in the family, but mostly driven by the hubby. He isn't a car person, so I usually did the selecting.
90-ish Ford Ranger pickup. Yawn. Only had it for a year before I traded it.
80-something IROC Camaro. Loud enough to wake the dead, but I never really felt the performance. Sold it at a garage sale for about what I had paid tho.
00-ish Ford Explorer Sport. A bit less yawn, and more room for the kids. A really good choice until my daughter smashed the front end and tranny started acting up.
02(?) Honda Si. Cute as a button, shifter on the dash, and total POS. All the oil poured out on the driveway the day I brought it home (brand new) and it took Honda 2 weeks to find the leak. Finally, they pronounced it dead and gave me...
02(?) Honda Si #2. At least it ran, but after a few months of many trips to the dealer for service and diagnosis, I discovered myself that it had no oil in it. So much for practical.
02 Jaguar X-Type. Put about 100 miles a day on it, with very few problems. (And when it did have a problem, it was very entertaining. Glad to see Jag didn't change everything!)
04 MB C230 Coupe. Still have her. Nice little fuel-efficient manual trans, that also can be coaxed into some spirited driving. At 32 mpg, I'm holding onto this for a while.
and now...
'00 Isuzu VX, Dragon Green!!! Whoo hoo!!!!

I wish Lancia would start selling cars here again... Fiat is back, so there is hope. Yes, the Lancia (I had a Zagato) was definitely ahead of its time. If you recall the car selection of the early 80's (like the "K" car, the uglies of the Mustangs, and other yawners) the Zagato was a real find. Front-wheel drive, incredible handling, fuel injection, and a very cool targa/cabriolet roof. The engine and the trans/clutch were all still original when I let her go. What did me in was an exhaust system that could no longer be legally smogged in California (due to a technicality...she was clean) and frustration with an aging "modified Lucas" wiring and electronics system. In this case, "modified" meant that they took the few parts of Lucas that still worked, and messed those up, too. I got really skilled at bump starting a car. Learned not to hit the high beams with the wipers on, and used the brakes sparingly because the taillights would draw too much juice if the lights were on. But I loved that car.

Nice to see a lot of old friends here. :-) Just looking thru, trying to get back into the Isuzu game by means of a VX really soon.... Might possibly end up with another Amigo or Trooper as I need to get something quickly and can't afford to wait for the right VX necessarily.... but we'll see. I really want one and I think it's about time I get one. :-) Anyway, I'm sure a lot of you remember me, but for those that might not or might need a refresher...
I used to run the 4x4Wire.com Isuzu Pages with Randii Burleson... Spent a good 5 years or so modifying and 4-wheeling Isuzus until some financial problems took me out of the game for awhile. Finally have the ability to afford a little something nicer at this point, and just recently lost a battle between my Montero's front end and a trailer hitch, so I need to get something relatively soon.... Hoping it will be a VX so that I can finally drive the one Isuzu I haven't had the opportunity to drive yet. I'm sure I won't be disappointed.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi, drop me a line sometime. Thanks guys and girls.

Hi I don't own a VX yet but will hopefully by the end of March. Driving a 86 Suzuki Samurai right now. I live on my boat in the Columbia river about 25 miles west of Longview, WA. Drove to Portland yesterday to test drive a VX but after inspecting the outside it has obvious it was a crashed and quick repair to dump vehicle. I'm 6'4" so was concerned with the my "fit" but it was totally comfortable and got me even more excited to have one. So I'm lurking your site for a VX to buy. Will be ready with cash by mid March. Color isn't really a concern but I'm not interested in anything that's been wrecked and repaired. Of course the less miles the better. Under 10k price too. So if you know of a good one for me please let me know. Also any within a 400-500 radius of Yuma, AZ. Going to visit family there in March so could fly there then drive home. Sammy will be for sale after I get my VX too. It's a decent one with no major mods.

Hello everybody.
I am from Italy, located in beautiful Tuscany, in the Chianti area by Florence.
The first time I saw a VX was 2003. A dealer here in Tuscany had it for sale for 35k euro for about one year! VX is extremely rare in Italy, from a research I did some years ago, Isuzu only sold 10 VX in MY 2001! I was about to buy that strange thing, that was catching my eyes so often, but after 6 months, I bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee bacause I was more confident in its comfort, and I was scared about assistance for a unique car like the VX here in Italy...
I have driven my GC for 8 years right now, but still I am thinking about owning a vx!!!! I know there's a Guy here in Florence that owns a Kaiser with red/black interior and one of theese days, I'll go to him and make an offer He can't refuse!!!:bgwb:
I'll keep my finger crossed!!! :winky:

I saw a VX a few years ago and wanted it real real bad, unfortunate on my half I already had a car. I now found a 1999 VX IronMan Edition with about 94,000 miles, and couldnt pass it up.
I do plan so small mods, like adding a backupcam, I also want to hook up a in-dash motorized gps/cd/dvd player to use the backup cam with. I was also thinking of tossing some LED into the inside to brighten it up a bit. I do also want to put a front bumper rail on it. But that's all in the future now I have to go enjoy driving it.

Approaching 100k she might be getting a little tired but I can seem to part with her. The wife and daughter do not like to drive her which is fine by me:). Hoping to get her dressed up, tires , lift kit, exhaust and if I can buy it I'll make it.

Hello Everyone, I'm a new member hailing from New York. First & foremost, love this site...can't think of a better place to learn what I need for my VX. I purchased her in Dec with approx 90k miles, normally when some folks would want to get rid of their cars....I loved everything about her(sorry...she's my baby)...flaws and all. I'll post pics today, she needs some TLC, but she couldn't have come to a better place - I want to restore her to better than new condition. I will admit, biggest draw back is rear view visually....or lack there of. Nothing a rearview camera couldn't help to minimize. Looking for links and help...as I'm very interested in several mods. Skid plats, hood scoops, even advice on tires(285/50/18R) and eventually paint. One step at a time...but I'm in it for the long haul. Thanks for reading.

Just wanted to stop in and say hi. I'm in SoCal and just gathering info on the Isuzu Vehicross to possibly purchase one in the future.:bwgy: I wanted to know if parts are pretty easy to find and what shops can work on the VX.
vt_maverick
02/22/2011, 08:25 AM
I can't speak for the shops in SoCal, but the answer to your parts question is that it's a mixed bag. The VX body panels are 100% unique to the vehicle, but most everything else internal (engine, interior, etc.) is shared with the Trooper, Rodeo, Passport, SLX, etc. and can be had fairly easily. You'll have to search (or ask specifically) for more info on certain parts, but the general rule of thumb is that cosmetic items are hard to find, mechanical items are somewhat easier.
On the shop question I would try to contact some folks in your area. Try using the member map to find members in your area:

Well, I remember this car from a long time ago, and it left and impression on me. Not a truck guy. My passion is my third gen RX-7 that is currently going single turbo.
Work forces a potential move to one of the snowiest cities in the country, Syracuse NY, and so this car came back to my mind.
Have parused the forum for a few hours, and looks like getting one will be an adventure. The dealer in CO, looks like a good option.
Hope to have one of these if I have to move to eskimo land.
PS: full disclosure, it did not seem to be any other way to get on the forum if you did not put a VX you have. So I just used a random number and it took it. Be glad to do it another way if need be.
Thanks

Bob Barker
03/02/2011, 10:34 PM
I got a Kurt hitch and installed myself, I think it looks great and no trimming needed on the back plastic. Lots of people here will search out a Tone hitch, works the same but requires some trimming since it sits so much closer to the body of the truck. Most will say it looks better, I can't really agree with that. Either way, the manufacturer should provide specs as to what the hitch can handle, but the VX's handbook (I believe) says these trucks aren't designed for towing. Even though several have done so with success.

Ya I'm with Bob, I had a Reese hitch on the back of mine and really liked it (liked it better when it had the silver trim ring around the receiver, first offroad trip knocked that off lol). As far as towing, I towed this about 500 or so miles with no issues, just drive safe:

I think the Curt/Dylan/Reese/Hidden Hitch bar-style hitches look best on a lifted VX, while the Tone style hitches look best on a stock or near-stock height VX. Larger hitch set-ups tend to detract from the overall rear appearance IMHO, but that effect seems to be negated on taller rigs.
The VX manual recommends against towing, but I believe Troopers with the same frame/mechanicals are rated to either 3500 or 5000 lbs. (somebody help me here). I think the consensus is that Isuzu recognized that there were additional dangers posed by the VX's shorter wheelbase, so they didn't want to leave themselves open to a potential liability. Regardless, many many members have towed with their VX. You can PM tom4bren or etlsport for starters.

Really weren't many options on a VX that I can think of, only the Ironman package was slightly different with the various badging and a roof rack. Sunroofs were an aftermarket item. Can't wait to see your pics.

It was used by a lady until a couple years ago to get groceries every once in a while, and then the last guy who owned it took the greatest care of it, which included not driving in the rain, and garage kept. I think he only put a couple thousand on it to get groceries every once in a while. The old owner was a true lover of this car but it no longer suited his needs. Was looking at ALL vehicles on Auto Trader 100 miles or less
from Austin after not being able to find a 2007 FJ Cruiser in the
only color I halfway liked with all the options. Even started looking
for a 98-00 Rav4 ( only 3 years I like ) in the green color but none nearby.
Once I saw the front end of the Vehicross online it caught my attention.
When I read on Wikipedia how rare they are I suddenly forgot about the

Hope I got a good one. I really don't know anything about them. :)

Hello are you lucky VX owners. I remember when these vehicles first came out and have loved them ever since. But now I want one. I've just gotten over the motorcycle phase, bought an 07 Gixxer 1000 last August, girlfriend and insurance company hated it, and didn't know what to get next. Well the bike is gone, and I have decided to start researching and pricing these cool vehicles. The more I read, the more I want one. So I have a few questions about them. From that post, I created a pretty comprehensive questionnaire very specific to the VX. It will help you know what to ask and what to check for. SInce the truck is basically 10-12+ yrs old now, we've become aware of many issues that may arise over time, so it's pretty helpful.
(As an FYI, we came up with a 2nd version and expanded it to be about 100 questions....it's really detailed. Here's a link to the long one in cause you get interested:

No worries.
Those eagles look close to snowflakes.
I had snowflakes on my old Isuzu MU, and there are a couple of VXs running around with them on.
(Not that I have seen them - the only VX I have ever seen in the flesh is my own.)
Your ebony looks good.
Hope you get the defects cleaned up ok.

I had them on mine and loved them. I think Isuzu Snowflakes are an awesome looking wheels. Congrats Joe, looks great and can't wait to see what you do with it

Hello everyone, so I'm a grad student and I'm thinking about buying a 99 Vehicross that I've found at a dealership. It has 82K miles on it and the price is good. The carfax report indicates some rear minor accident but the damage to the bumper (?) was repaired. Just a bit nervous, is this a good daily car, how log in terms of mileage will it last. What should I have serviced first, will the gas prices ($3.64 unleaded) kill me...lol
Would love to hear from owners, I'll use it for my daily short commute, road trips etc. I might actually like to learn how to use 4WD, in high school this was my dream car (my reasons: looks, size & capability), I've owned a Rodeo Sport and loved it and downsized from a 2002 Mercedes CL 500 when I went back to school. Do the fish eye mirrors help with rear visibility issues? Would love your thoughts folks...and hw do I post pix??

I'm a recent owner, got one in January.
I use mine as a commuter (about 40 miles round trip highway), but not every day since I try and ride the bike in as much as possible. The big thing you have to watch is oil consumption. I check mine every time I fill up, and nearly every time I drive it.
What are they asking for it? To be honest, I think I paid a little too much for mine, it was $7500 with 110k miles. What color? That is equally as important.
Every time I drive it (like this morning) I fall more in love. The off road capabilities are fantastic and handles well in the snow. For mileage, I have seen several hit 200k. To be honest though, I think almost any modern car will go over 200k provided you maintain it.
Rear visibility does suck. It's sucks 10% less if you take off the headrests. Gas mileage is horrible, it's going to range from 12mpg to 18mpg on a good day. First thing I did was change the oil, mobil1 and a new PCV (after about 1k miles from the dealer). I also used seafoam before the oil change. I just wanted to know I got off on the right foot.

HOW TO UPLOAD PICS TO YOUR GALLERY:
(some functions require you to be a member first, like uploading an avatar pic)
~Click on "Gallery" in the blue header above
~Then click "Gallery Links" from the same blue header
~In that drop down box you should see, second from the bottom..."Upload photos" - Click that.
~Then it will let you select 5 pics (one at a time) from your computer. Click on "Choose File" and find the pic you want. If they're really big megapixels, I've found it bombs out if I do more than 2 at a time. So I'd hit "Upload/submit" after those 2, then just do a few at a time.
~If they're smaller files, you can do all 5 at once.
~Sometimes, after it's done uploading your pics, it will show another screen where you have to click at the bottom of screen..."Process".
And lastly......it's a VERY good idea to play around with and get to know the SEARCH FUNCTION on this site, it will open up another TON of info to you to read. This site is just jammed full of incredible info!:thumbup:

I'm a recent owner, got one in January.
I use mine as a commuter (about 40 miles round trip highway), but not every day since I try and ride the bike in as much as possible.
Temet: I was thinking of getting a bike too, in hopes of saving on gas
The big thing you have to watch is oil consumption. I check mine every time I fill up, and nearly every time I drive it.
Temet: Why is that?
What are they asking for it?
Temet: I got them to go down to $6100 plus tax, for a black one with 82K miles- is that good?
To be honest, I think I paid a little too much for mine, it was $7500 with 110k miles. What color? That is equally as important.
Temet: Does color affect this price much?
Every time I drive it (like this morning) I fall more in love. The off road capabilities are fantastic and handles well in the snow. For mileage, I have seen several hit 200k. To be honest though, I think almost any modern car will go over 200k provided you maintain it.
Temet: That is encouraging and I really appreciate your time on this!
Rear visibility does suck. It's sucks 10% less if you take off the headrests. Gas mileage is horrible, it's going to range from 12mpg to 18mpg on a good day.
Temet: That's what I thought hence the bike as a second ride idea...lol

Temet: I'm a newbie, what's seafoam and PCV..?
Sea foam is a product that is used to "flush" out any residues and/or dirty particules in the fuel lines.I personally never use it,but many members did and they can provide more details about the benefits of this product.
PCV = ( Positive Crankcase Valve ) is located on the driver's valve cover side.
If you remove the engine's black plastic cover you can see a hose running from that valve cover to the throttle and there's the PCV that you shall replace every oil change as well it's cheap
hope it helps :)

There's so much specific info on this site.
Here's a start...read my post from a few days ago to another new owner:

You have many questions in your post above, each has a pretty detailed answer available. Honestly, I know you're stoked like we all were, but you need to set aside several hours to start reading all the pertinent posts, "How-To's", guides, etc...for areas you're interested in. There's an entire wiki on just the lift, and probably 1000 posts with specific info.
The lift question and tire size issue have probably been about the most common topic discussed here. I've included links to some of the topics. But you'll have to start playing around with the search function. You'll start finding some back ground info then you'll be able to post specific questions here to further help you make your choices, where to buy, etc, etc, etc....
There's so much detailed info, from the most incredible people on any car forum, you'll get all the data you'll ever want, it's all here, and the folks are super friendly and willing to help!
If you have any questions, shoot me a PM, I usually know where to get the info or who to contact.
Welcome!
I just spent the day playing in the garage with mine, polished the headlights so they look like diamonds sparkling now, and I've never lost that silly smile on my face, all day long!

simple answer. OME 912 or 919 springs, torsion crank, maybe some trimming depending on the offset of the wheels, and you can clear 33's. As far as door panels, find good used ones somewhere or see if isuzu has anything left but I doubt it (I called forever ago about my 99' and I don't think they had the door panel or the inserts)

Door panels...need to try the junk yards. Here's a search function that searches many yards nation-wide. But you'll still need to call the yard to see if they have that panel. Doesn't look like it's separately identified/inventoried.

I saw this vehicle a few blocks from my house and have been looking at it for months. I like its stance and balance. My wife and I would like to buy one of these fine machines. I have read so much good and bad. My hope is to purchase one of these, and my wife likes the white, and yellow the most. If possible I would like to have the gidance of the members here on the forum. I am not afraid of fixing. I just dont want to do it all the time. I live in Utah and have been to Moab many years ago with at that time my 69 chev blazer. It was heavily modified. I will see where this vehicle takes me and the wife, and what it becomes for us. Any gudance and suggestions will be appreciated. I look forward to becoming a new owner of yet another car with obvious style and function. Thanks, Jerry and Lizette.

Hello everyone, been lurking for a few days while I researched buying one of these. This site is very informative. Have known about VX's for awhile and was my wifes dream car but I have always been a Pontiac enthusiast. Love rare and unusual vehicles. I own a 71 455HO 4spd (1 of 775) Trans Am, 89 Turbo Trans am (1 of 1555) and 2004 GTO (1 of 1031). Always loved the styling and that Isuzu and GM were related. Started a new business recently and needed something a little bigger. Checked Craigslist and found a 2000 Ironman with 99000 miles. Went to look at it. Runs and drives good but has a few issues like windows, trans. shift shaft seal leaking, passenger seat welded together, growl on decel and misc. parts missing or broken. Time for timing belt and plan on doing all fluids soon. Owner wasn't the best at maintenence. Managed to talk the owner down on price where we felt comfortable so my wife is now the proud owner! Have been a GM tech for years so most of it looks pretty easy. Business keeps me pretty busy but will try and check in often. Look forward to meeting any of the members. Thanks for all of the information, Jamie.
Hello :D Discovered this forum a few months ago and had been lurking till just now.
I bought my '00 Proton Yellow VX from its original owner In december of '10. Had to drive to Omaha to get it from AL. It currently has 122k miles on it, had around 116k when I bought it. Motor was dealer replaced under warranty at about 57k miles in '02, iirc. I've wanted one for years. I plan on owning it till I die. :]
I managed to hit a deer already and slide, backwards, into a pine tree due to ice. *Sigh.* The deer broke a front marker light and cracked the bumper cladding a bit and the pine tree put a tiny dent in the rear door. Other than that, the thing is pristine :)

Hello all.
Around the end of 1999, I was having my Subaru serviced at a dealership. I was walking around the lot and saw this beautiful black monster of a truck. About 3 hours later I was driving home in my new 2000 VX. For the past few years I've been driving a company vehicle and my VX has been stored - time to pull her out and get her back to ship shape for the road. I love this thing and will never, ever part with it. I actually joined this forum a few years ago, but lost touch. Im back! Thanks to all.

Hey folks,
Dahootch reporting in from Colorado Springs.
My daughter has a 1999 VX she was given by her Grandfather.
I am glad I found this forum, because her VX is cursed with the dreaded driver's window binding and I was searching for answers. Before I could get the dragging fixed, last week the window stuck in the "up" position while the motor just kept whirring like nothing was wrong. I pulled the door panel off, and noticed both plastic tabs on the glass broke off. I think I am going to contact SBC and purchase his metal tabs.
Glad to join your forum.
v/r,
Dahootch

Good to meet you all and thanks!
Welcome! It will be so awesome, and will go quick! MANY of us have had to ship our VXs.....seems like way more VXs on the right half of the country. Mine was in Eastern Virginia, shipped it to Phoenix. Talk about anxious waiting! Have a great trip! CHECK YOUR OIL AT EVERY FILL UP! AND CARRY AT LEAST 4 EXTRA QTS WITH YOU!! Some VXs (like mine) only consume oil when on prolonged driving (like 4+ hrs highway speed)
Also, on long highway driving, MANY VXs (like mine :rollo::laugho:) transmission console/housing area gets really hot to the touch, on both sides of the transmission housing and the forward area of the center console...it'll make your bottle of water or soda HOT if it's sitting in the square hole/cup holder area! Best we can figure, it's normal, no problem unless a tranny idiot light goes on.
Have fun!

Welcome. I drove to my local Isuzu dealer to get mine new over eleven years ago. It took me about fifteen minutes to get there. ;Dy;
Mark Griffin (a VX lifer) :_steering
:) You got me beat - bought mine new in 02 and it was about 1/2 hour away at a dealer.

Hello,
I'm a student at the University of Arizona, have been looking for a jeep wrangler or tacoma, and accidentally came across a CL posting for a VehiCROSS and took a look...now I can't get it off my mind and have decided this is the vehicle I want. Unfortunately the one I looked at has a few issues. I'm in no hurry, but have been scouring the internet to learn more, and also had an opportunity to talk with Dale, a local Tucsonan, who has two; and he loves them!

The last post made was the looking stage. Now my wife has been enjoying the drivng stage for 2 weeks. We purchased Technipope's Proton. I only had to drive it from Coumbus OH to SLC Utah. Started with 48,000 and didn't have an issue during the drive at all. Even checked the oil on the way and after 1800 miles only needed 1/2 quart. I have to ask about he window for the driver side. I have read all that I can find, but I'm afraid to take the door panel off. I really don't want to have anything brak that I can't replace, but the window will not go up and down easily:( really the only issue with this vehicle. Everything rocks even the back up camera that is attached to the stereo. really amazing. I havn't been on this long, but are there many of these in Utah? That is other than when Moab is over run with them. Can't wait to get every thing figured out. My wife cals her truck BB. Of course the truck and the name had to be cute jusgt like her.

I've been a member on here a little while, because I've wanted a VX for years! I'm finally gearing up to get rid of my useless 350Z and g/f's V8 Explorer 4x4 to get her a *practical* car, and myself a VX . Can't wait until I've got the cash in hand, ready to fly out for a great deal! I'll go back to lurking mode now :p

Ha, thats how I felt last year when I sold my 350z, it was like owning a boat... as in the happiest day I had with it was the day I bought it and the day I sold it.

My Proton was called "cute" this weekend (cashier at Home Depot actually left her register to come out and check it out). Call it bad or sick or knarly ... just don't call it cute.
Just kidding. Hope your wife enjoys her VX for many years.

Haha I know! I traded my double cab Tacoma for it, might have been the worst idea I've ever had! The 'coolness' wore off in about a week. Then I was left wondering 'what the heck am I doing in this car??' Nice car, just doesn't work for me...
Went to Wet N Wild today, saw a white VX with a mild lift in the parking lot, all the way from Oklahoma. Now I really can't get them out of my head. Soon!

Hey, Mike here... looking to buy a fun DD with off road possibilities... vehicross is one of those. I have an SUV (which is for sale) currently, but it cant be lifted without a lot of engineering and custom building. Even if it were feasible, i couldnt bring myself to take it offroad because its too clean and I built it for stereo shows / competitions. But anyways, as soon as it sells, I'll be looking into buying a vehicross... I'm pretty good with electrical, so hopefully I can bring something helpful to the forum. Greetings to all

Hello, I am looking really close at a vehicross and the more research I do the more I want one. I am a big into rallyx, stage rally, and Paris-Dakar style rally and the vehicross seems right up my alley.
Also I have a friend who drove one for several years before it started to give her "electrical problems?" And I guess started to shift a little hard from time to time. Now it sits in her parents yard with grass growing up around it.
I currently have a 1990 audi coupe quattro and a 98 Land Rover discovery. I am hoping to sell the discovery and throw them maybe $2000 to pick up this vx from them. :bgwb:
We will see how it goes as I know they are worth more then that. I think they just want it out of their yard though so maybe I can talk them into it. I understand it may need a new trans , but for that price I can put a new one in.
I'll try and get some pics up to let you guys take a look and see what you think. Oh its a 2000 dragon btw. Thanks!

Hard shifting if combined with the dash gear lights going crazy is usually an indicator of a bad trnsmission shift switch...a fairly common problem. Fairly cheap and easy to fix.

nice! then maybe I can get it back on the road and working correctly fairly quickly. If I can sell my discovery soon.

Finally got one. I bought a black 99 in Michigan. Paid $4,500 for it. It has 106k miles. I flew up and drove it 700 miles home to North Carolina. Idles high sometimes and cuts off when stopping sometimes. Love it, but the electric fan stopped working and I don't have a remote for it. Any ideas on why the fan stopped coming on? Thanks
