View Full Version : Transmission Clunk from 2nd to 3rd
I recently had to use my donut spare for about 100 miles and I did travel at speeds of about 60mph on it. It was the right front wheel.
Ever since then, after the normal tire was reinstalled, I have a loud clunk when the transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. It only happens between 1st and 2nd.
I mentioned the donut spare situation since I thought it may have something to do with it.
A while back I had the same shifting problem and, believe it or not, it turned out to be a fuse!! I had changed the fuse and the shifting clunk stopped! I checked all of the fuses and they all look good so I am now completely at a loss. Could it be a relay related to the TOD or something of that nature?
Does anyone have any idea what the cause may be? And, of course, how can it be fixed?

Hmm... not sure if I am right or not but I think you are not suppose to use the spare in front. I think I recall reading about it in the manual... or maybe it is written on the spare itself. I am not sure if that would do any damage or not, I hope someone more knowledgeable will weigh in.

do a "search" here you will find an answer. I had similar situation when fuse was going and loud bang was heard from the transmission. Left front wireing needed to be replaced to stop loud bang. Other people had similar issue, so it is documented. Even if you do not blow the fuse now the mod shifting unit on the transmission could've got hosed (hopefully not) so read about it in the foum and take it to the trusted mechanic with a printout from the forum so they can fix it faster. I did the same and boy, everybody were happy
Good luck

I started getting hard shifts - mainly from 2nd to 3rd gear - today, and can't really find a reason as of yet. I see that some people have posted about a fuse; is there something in the manual that would tell me what fuse to look for? I guess I'll just start pulling them and see what I find.
One thing that maybe I should mention, since there is talk about a fuse or electrical issue - I was installing another amplifier on Saturday, and it seems that I was having a grounding problem with the power wire. I blew out 4 fuses tweaking the wire, and trying to find the spot where the wire was grounding. Could the grounded power wire and fuse blowing contribute to an electrical issue which would cause the shifting problem?
Any thoughts or suggestions from someone with any mechanical, technical, or automotive common sense knowledge would be greatly appreciated. I scheduled an appointment at the dealership, but I'm hoping I can figure out a simple fix before I go hassle with a dealer.

3 zerks on the propeller if left alone too long will also cause a clunk
I took a look where you guys mentioned. I removed the airbox and looked very closely at the harness behind the driver's side headlight. I saw a few connectors but did not see any fraying. For good measure, I pulled the harness away from the body in this area.
Can someone post a picture showing me exactly where the fraying is prone to occurring???
I also looked at all of my fuses and found the rear defroster fuse blown. I replaced the fuse.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
I am still trying to determine the cause of my clunking from 2nd to 3rd. Can anyone lend some insight??
I have decided to take my VehiCROSS in to the dealer to try and fix the transmission clunk. Before I do, DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA HOW I CAN DIAGNOSE AND FIX THIS MYSELF???????

When was the last time you had the transmission serviced?
Have you checked for fluid leaks? The 4L30E is prone to leaking around the accumulator piston cover, which can cause funky things to happen in 2nd gear.
Maugan_VX,
I haven't had the transmission serviced and it has about 60K miles at this point. I was told the clunk can be one of two things
The mode switch and/or its electrical connections
A short in the harness behind the left front headlamp.
I looked at the harness behind the headlamp and I jiggled the harness to the mode switch.....or so I thought I did.
I just abhor taking any car of mine to the dealer!!
Any further thoughts?

I had the same issue back in June; it was the mode selector switch causing the problem. Another good indicator of the switch issue is if you notice your LED's on the speedo panel jumping back and forth from D, N, R, etc.
Whenever it started to act up, I could move the shifter up and down thru the gears a few times, and it would "catch", and run fine until the next time I started up. You may want to give it a try...

My VX had the hard shifts and it ended up being the mode switch as well.
Thanks guys...........
OK, MODE SWITCH....................
As I understand it, this switch is attached to the side of the transmission on the driver's side.
Is that correct??
Were your instances the actual switch or the wiring or harness to the switch??
I just had my Mode Switch replaced I was throwing a code #P0705 (Transaxle Range Switch Circuit). Since my VX is out of warranty, dealer wanted $320 for it and I got it from St Charles for $130. I too had the led act up when shifting between drive and park.
OMG your Porsche 996 is AMAZING!!! 603 horsepower and 603 foot pounds of torque! What a collection of nice automobiles you have... I want to be you when I grow up.

I'm have the same problem and now I am pretty sure it's the mode switch. I went through a creek, drove home, next morning it would't start (not even a noise). So I figure it's my starter and replaced it with still nothing. Then my buddy says "You try starting it in neutral?" Well I ended up trying it and vrrrrrooooomm started right up! So I know my mode switch is bad. Well after that my transmission clunks after it is warm.... seems to be after driving for 10 min. plus? My car however has not had a problem starting in Park for the last 2-3 weeks and I thought the switch had dried out but after reading this it seems that I still have a bad mode switch.
Thanks everyone for the info!
And yes it is on the side of the transmission.

Oh My... what wonderful toys you have. I'm in love. ;Dr;
Cyrk,
What is St. Charles??? If I need a mode switch, I should get it from somewhere other than the dealer?? BTW, thanks for the compliments.
Anita,
Thank you for the compliment.
St Charles Isuzu, most of us get our parts from them...

Hi guys.
Im Gutted....
I only bought my vx a few weeks ago and driving home from work this morning (I work nights) I felt a clunk going up through the gears, then the red CHECK ENGINE light came on. My heart sank and i thought ohh... s#!t.
I'm not going to pretend I know anything about the mechanics of a car. I'm a nurse for God sakes, I fix people not cars...lol
Anyway, I carried on crawling about 30mph as i only live 5 miles from work. 1st to 2nd was smooth but 2nd to 3rd felt horrible! A large clunk while it jolted into 3rd, same going down from 3rd to 2nd.
Got home and straight away on here searching to find out what's wrong.
More than likely looks like its the mode position switch (whatever that is) but you guys seem to think the LEDs should flicker or go dim etc etc when I change gear mine doesn't? Everything works spot on.
Worst thing is I live in England, United Kingdom. So the chances of finding a mechanic that even knows what a vx is never mind how to fix one is rare!!!
Eg I phoned my local this morning and he was like, "what's a vehicross?"
Omg, doesn't matter thanks for your help...lol
Any ideas?
Anyone

You might have your local give this place a call and ask if anyone is still there who knows the Vehicross who could offer some insight. They used to always have at least one or two VX's on the lot, and I even sold them a few spare parts a couple of years ago.

It looks like there are 3 members somewhat close to you (Derby, Doncaster, Nottingham). You might want to contact them to see if they can recommend a shop for you to take it to.
On the left side of the home page, find the search function. Select 'Members' from the drop down & leave the other field blank. Click on 'Advanced' & then search. Put GB in the country field & click 'Search'. You can then contact the nearest members by email or PM.
Hopefully it'll be as simple as low fluid level in your tranny. Good luck.

Hi guys
Thanks for the tips, ok my vx kind of fixed itself overnight :-) as when I drove it this morning it drove spot on. CHECK ENGINE light was still on got phoning. That cgtrading guy was a bit..... "How can I be polite" unhelpful.
Told me any mechanic will fix a vehicross and that I didn't need a specialist! An engine is an engine and a clutch is a clutch!
Ok.... I thanked him for his help and moved on.
Found another garage that deals in jap 'boy racer' imports!!!
After all the mechanics came out and walked around my vx taking pictures one of them had to put it on 3 different diagnostic machines before coming up with a fault code. Turns out it was the throttle position sensor. Apparently that's what caused the misfire from 2nd to 3rd. Don't know how or why it's stopped but I've done about 40 miles today and it's driving 100%
Yeah!
Will get in contact with the other vx'ers. Fingers crossed they still own them.
Thanks again guys (((thumbs up)))

:o Sorry about that.
Based on all of the emails he sent when we were working out our parts deal, he never gave me the impression as being impatient or someone hard to work with.
If he's of the opinion that the Vehicross isn't necessarily a special/unique vehicle, I wonder why he still has a picture of one at the top of his website section of 4x4's for sale?
I suppose we can chalk it up that times and people just change.
