Hi I just bought a 1999 VX with 47K on it, unfortunately I did not get an owner's manual or workshop manual with it so I have limited info on fluid types. I would like to use Jegs Royal purple for the engine oil, transfer case and diff, so can anyone let me know recommended respective viscosities? Also where is the automatic transmission fluid checked? I can't seem to find a dipstick under the hood. Sorry for the basic questions but without an owner's manual life is tough. :)

rgds, steve

ps it seems like a great car

do a search for ATF or Trans.. Also check out the "How to" section. Joe-Black has a great link on pictures (http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2375&highlight=atf+change)

You can download a copy of the manual from Tone. www.tonemonday.com (http://www.tonemonday.com)

Answer about the dipstick is that there is none! check the links I posted above to explain more.

Found the link for the manual, thanks.

Just one other newbie-type question: does the less-restrictive air cleaner fit as an element in the stock air box or is it a complete new assembly?

So far the car seems fine except for the standard electric window problem on the passenger side. There also seems to be a slight wheel bearing drone from one of the rear wheels but it could be my imagination.

Thx, Viz

the K&N filter is a drop in filter. you can also remove the elbow going into the box to increase air flow. shawn

This should have pretty much everything the manual set has and it's cheap.

Those manual compilations are like phone books though - you wouldn't want to carry it around like a regular manual.

This is a very helpful site! My previous car was a Maserati 228 and on the Yahoo group for mas sometimes it could take days to get useful info. Viz

Welcome! Was wondering....where did you buy your '99 VX, and what color is it? I traded in my '99 Astral Silver with 40K miles 2 years ago to Sierra Isuzu in Monrovia (traded in for an '01 FoxFire). Last 4 VIN digits are 1139. Could you be the new owner of my first VX?!?

Lisa

ps: I distinctly recall having the courtesy to leave the owners' manual in the glove box!!

...in West LA. I don't like buying from *any* dealer but it was relatively stress-free since I paid cash and did not haggle much.

BTW always check the oil, they had 1 1/2 quarts over full, in other words 6 1/2 quarts in the engine instead of five quarts! After getting the oil changed to the correct level the engine revs much more freely and is generally happier. Over-filling oil is not recommended - duh. I wonder which mechanic thought he was being cute? Or just stupid?
