View Full Version : Exhaust tone vanishing at idle?

Anyone ever had their PV muffler suddenly get real quiet at idle? I can stand right behind it and there's just about nothing. Quieter than stock probably. Wondering what this could be. Sounds normal when you rev it up, but that nice sound at idle is gone. Just happened for the first time this afternoon - hopefully not a big deal and not a recurring problem. Any ideas? I do have slight carbon deposits around welds where it was put on, but have had them for some time. Don't think I have a significant exhaust leak, but.... anyway, also seemed a bit hesitant to turn over when I turned it off and restarted it a few times. Maybe hesitant is the wrong word... more like weak. Went on and washed it and it started up nice and strong going back to the garage. ????

Carbon deposits are LEAKS in the welds.

Well of course - I know that, but like I said I've had those a while with no ill effects. It's not too significant and I'll drop by whenever I have a spare moment and have it fixed.

This idle silence, on the other hand, is a brand new thing, and it didn't really do it again today, so I don't know. I'll just count my blessings if it never happens any more.

I haven't had any trouble yet, no codes or hesitation. I also haven't had the nerve to really punch the gas pedal, don't want to wake up all the babies in the neighborhood!

Thanks again Tone. I had the PV installed yesterday, the day UPS dropped it off. The Axiom has a 2" or 2.25" system so I went with an aluminized cat back for a $150 that matched the PV. Watched the welder the whole time, when they started it up it was music to my ears! I'm kind of embarrassed at the stop lights and take off slowly so as not to draw attention to myself.

Yeah, and likewise for some folks with the PV. But mine used to be a little more aggressive sounding even when it was idling and wasn't pushing much exhaust. Really liked that!

Got all the PV installation welds fixed today, by the way. All had carbon seeping through. Don't think it made any difference at all in sound except maybe when you floor it, and then just maybe. But it's fixed.
