I just bought the Optima Red Battery on the advice of the forum. It seems to be a fantastic battery. I just have one question about my purchase. The battery seems small compared to the space that's left from the original battery. Was the origional battery that big or the Optima that small?
Thanks. Peace.

Optima is more compact due to it’s design but is almost 300 amps more powerful. Make sure you go the free plate that should come with it to make it tall enough to clamp securely in the battery tray otherwise it will move around. Good buy!

Where can one get this battery at a good price?

I got my original Yellow Top (for the Trooper RS before transferring to the VX) through a friend of a friend who was an Interstate Battery dealer at a good discount. Since he's no longer in business we got the last two Red Tops (for the IronMan and Kathy's Trooper) at local AutoZones. You can really shop online and save a few bucks, but without the hassle and expense of shipping it's hard to beat a local store.

Costco carries the Optima Red Top at $99.

I am running two Optimas...Redtop is the starting battery and the YellowTop runs the amp and winch
;Dp; ;Dp;
got the RedTop at a MArine base for $99 and no tax
got the YellowTop at AutoZone for like $150
I have a 160 Amp alternator running juice to a 200 Amp battery isolator and then it automatically charges the batteries as they need.....;Dp;

Sam's Club carries Exide orbital batteries with even more cranking amps than Optima. See these links:

If I get a battery that has a lot more amps than the original, will it affect anything in a negative or positive way? Will my windows roll up faster? Will it be overkill or will it run longer with less pull? I have fog lights and plan to add an emergency response light to the dash. I don't have anything else in excess of original equipment on board.

Also, whenever available, a battery with a higher CCA is more capable of providing for the electrical needs of (older) vehicles, and will not adversely affect the vehicle's electrical system."
In Florida it might not matter so much; but around here a strong battery on a cold winter night is a necessity, especially when you haven't used your vehicle for a while.

Red Top is the standard, Yellow Top is deep cycle and Blue Top marine use. You can check the Optima Batteries (http://www.optimabatteries.com) website for specific details.
Sears also carries the Optima batteries.

Ok, so what's the difference between an auto and deep cycle battery? Which is better? The auto battery has a longer warranty and has more cranking amps, so why is the deep cycle more?? Is it just cause it can be submerged and still work, or is it because its a marine battery? If the battery is submerged I think I'll have more problems then getting my truck to start :)

Is the general rule, the more cranking amps the better? Or is there some equation of cranking amps to lifecycle etc. that I should know about.

It is Complete Discharge amount to Life Cycle that determines Battery Life ( Plate Loss)
Some general electrical info.

Thank You, UtahVXer! That is the most information I've ever been given about batteries. I followed the links as you suggested and all my questions were answered, as well as some I didn't even know I wanted to ask!

Only $50 more than red and it'll keep your stereo amp from dimming your lights when you play your music loud :yes:

I think Optima is over rated. Take your old batt. in and tell them you want the largest cranking amps that will fit. The energizer has a 1100 cca that is exactly the same size. Windows go up in a flash. Play your radio long . OH- you can buy two with the money you save . Both will dye in three years .

I put a Red Top in thinking at least it will not leak like my last battery did. The problem is if you DONT drive the VX that much the battery goes deader than a door nail. At least my battery did and it was so bad I took it back to Costco and got a full refund and then went back to the wet cell. Currently no more problems and very happy with the 725 cranking amps!
