View Full Version : Houston Oct2?

Tone & I were kicking aound the idea of a late summer get together. Pondering another meet here in Katy then perhaps a run to the Kemah Boardwalk. We had a great time on the last run (though I accidently walked my dinner tab...thanks for the save T). Sorta figured on letting the Houston heat die down a bit so perhaps late Sept or early Oct. Any interest from the locals & newbies???

Just curious as to when you thought this might happen? If its late September, I may be interseted in coming down. I am dying to get back into the seat of my VX... its been WAY too long.

Transmission is back in... had to modify my already modified oil pan before the motor would settle into place. I think I've found that the exhaust manifolds from the donor motor aren't going to work... at least not without some modifications... might have to go with a set of LS1 truck manifolds or a set of LS1 truck headers... I'm hoping I can find one of the local Silverado SS owners who have gone to headers so I can try out their manifolds. I have to bolt the torque convertor to the flex-plate and lower the motor/trans combo back into place and then the real test... put the T-case back in... I'm still not completely sure that the front prop shaft is going to clear... but dangit... I'm gonna try! lol This will happen before the weekend and hope to ahve the trans mount and motor mounts done this weekend... then I have to find a way to get the VX to the exhaust shop for a nice new system front to back... wiring to get the thing to start will be cake... then its drive-shaft/prop-shaft time. I've had a number of set-backs due to my knee injury awhile back (did it again a few weeks ago) and I've been busy with other things so I haven't spent much time even THINKING about the VX... let alone actually working on it. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel though so I'm starting to get psyched up again. It should run again with just a couple good weekends of work... sorry I haven't been in touch with all y'all... TTYL!

OK...let's narrow it down a bit shall we...

Either the 18th of Sept or the 2nd of Oct (Oct is cooler to hang in Kemah).

Any takers?

Welp, not that it was definite that I would make it, so don't make a decision because of me, but I will be in Florida on the weekend of 10/2... and most likely won't be back to the midwest until late the following weekend... there'd be hell to pay if I missed my best friends B-day... anyway... I still have plenty to do to the VX so I'm not positive that it will be in running order by then anyway... TTYL!

Ok-the easy part of picking a date is done. Figure on saturday Oct 2nd. The plans will run as usual. Meet here in Katy with cocktails/brews by the pool (swim or watch). Mods applied if needed then head out 45 to Kemah.

Tone was right with his comments in the "meet" post. We had a good time the last trip out to the gulf. We usually leave Katy for a late afternoon arrival in Kemah. Plan on hanging along the waterfront boardwalk before dinner dockside. It's well worth the trip if you haven't been in a while or never seen the area.

Now comes the hard part- attendance. We've had as many as twelve VX's over the years and as little as three. If we can get folks to head out this way I'll continue to host the gatherings but the fall off in attendance has become indicative that there may no longer be a local interest. A turnout will prove me wrong but otherwise this might be the last meet for a while. I can always count on the Austin crowd but locally....well, we'll see. Give us a post if you can meet up and, as always, new folks are welcome.

Jay tells me he will be able to make it and Gill wants me to bring him a skid plate. I've also got a full length box that is too big to ship that I need to get rid of. Great if you have removed your rear seat but want a flat area with lots of storage compartments to keep your stuff from prying eyes or sliding around. Would be great for putting stereo components in without worry of damage when carrying stuff. Build one for GP Bob 2 yrs ago and he is still using it with more stuff on board than I have ever seen. Will post a pic later this weekend.

Hello all....add one more to your future weekend convoy's... unfortnately, that weekend I will be in Chicago.

Just bought a used 99 with 100K miles...the thing looks brand new on the inside and fantastic on the out. I am in love with my vehicle.

Just a quick question though...when the car goes over 10 mph, should the green lights for assisted front drive come on? Are the brakes supposed to be spongey before pressing very hard?

guess it's time to bring it to the dealership for evaluation.

see yah

Oh, and yes that is the way TOD works... search here, there is plenty of info on TOD. The brake trouble sounds suspect though...

Roy if you live out Katy way you might want to consider running your ride by McKinzey Bond Isuzu at Mason & I-10 for a look-over. They are more than fair $$ wise and have never dropped unnecessary repairs on me. They are the only ones that have ever worked on my '99.

If you can't make the 2nd then gimme a yell sometime & we'll meet up.

Still looking for a double digit turn out-got to be more locally.

By the way whilest I was driving around at night, in my offical capacity as a certified public servant, I found a '99 locked up inside a "you sell it" car lot. Couldn't get to it but the poor silver lovely is simply sitting there all by itself on Hwy 6 at I-10 waiting for a new owner.

A brief recap...
We ended up with 8 parked out front here in the sprawling vastlands that make up west Houston. Installed the skid plate & tow to Gil's ride and Larry needed a piece of rear cladding replaced. We headed down to the Kemah Boardwalk for dinner and general "hanging around".

Things that need to remembered on this one:
1. A VX owner traveling 2200 round trip miles just to see friends- and to get some items installed- simply amazing
2. Kudos to Tone for showing up despite having, what may of us
believed, was an illness close to walking pneumonia
3. Kudos to my wife for having medications to get Tone through
the day
4. Weasel..glad to meet you. Wish you could have hung around
a bit longer
5. Feeding & playing around with the Stingrays (yes- the fish) in
Kemah was worth every bit of the two bucks we paid to play
6. Dinner with friends on the waterfront---priceless
7. Kudos to my absent neighbor across the street. Little does he
know just how often we use his garage door opener and raid
his tools & supplies while he's out of town
8. Tone- can't thank you enough for the gift. It (the box) looks
great in the back deck. For those of you who have not had the
chance to purchase one of Tone's storage boxes you're
missing out. Great addition & quality. Get one if you have a
chance
9. Was good seeing Tim again & I promise I'll get this radio back
to you
10. Seeing the look on people's faces as 7 VX's traveled south
on the freeways. Honking horns & people waving
11. Finally (& most important) - You ladies always make the
events more enjoyable. Thanks

I'm glad you all made it out here. Cary, Sammi (The Littlest Dragon) and I thank you.

Kemah is a great place to hang out. I had a great time with all y'all Texans, and it was worth every minute of the drive! Meeting George & his wife and seeing the rest of you for the first time since Zu Zoo VI was awesome! It really is a laugh riot being around you folks. The whole weekend went well until heading back from Houston to Dallas on Sunday. A piece of debris was thrown up from the highway & put a dent & some scratches right at the leading edge of the hood of my VehiCROSS.
:sighb2:
I look at it this way... if that's ALL that went wrong (just a little cosmetic blemish), I can't seat it too much. It blows, but could've been something worse. Hey Tim... is that how you got your hood mod?

:goof: My top 10:
1) My rear cladding hasn't fallen off yet...
2) nor did it burst into flames...
3) I hope you can say the same about your garage George!
4) Feeding Stingrays was wicked cool.
5) It's @ 20 degrees cooler up here...
6) and might drop into the upper thirties tonight! ;eekb;
7) Texas' spaghetti interstate exchanges are insane...
8) but also wicked cool!
9) Next time, get that police escort...
10) and next time we get George on the rides at Kemah!

Thanks Jay for the hospitality Friday night and guiding me around Texas. Thanks George & Carrie for opening your home (& garage) to us. Thanks to Tone for being so knowledgable, skilled, and generous even while under the weather.
Thanks to everybody that helped mod my VX. :smack:
Lastly... thanks Lisa & Tim for the birthday drinks!!! JAGER!

It's a Warn M8000 custom mounted by an off-road shop here in Lewisville. Unique Concepts is the name of the shop. I asked him to draw up a set of plans while doing the build, but he didn't have the time with several big projects going on at the time. He primarily works on Jeeps (law of averages) but has done work on several local Isuzus.

Tone
10/07/2004, 08:06 AM
Gill, take care of your hood first - we can’t have you driving a damaged baby! I’m fine until after Halloween - can you send me a pic of the damage? You might be able to do some of the prep work yourself and save a bunch of money. Having done the console mod, the final sanding is where you need a professional but the filling and initial stuff can be done by most anyone.

It really was great seeing you and having us all together again and yes, the stingrays WERE wicked cool, but I still don’t want to put no slimy fishies in their mouths!
