How do I get it back to early days of tightness? Is it a quick fix?

You can adjust the steering gear easily enough. If you're not familiar with the procedure I can post directions with pictures as I think I'll be doing Heraclid's this weekend.

I must admit, I have never played with the steering box adjustment.
Tight or loose steering can be a combination of many components: Ball joint, tie rod ends, centerlink, steering idler, steering box.
On the Amigo which, I believe, shares the same type of steering system as the Trooper/Vehicross, (recirculating ball), many of us have had to changed the steering idler:

The bushings/bearing get a little worn causing the shaft to have a little play. The old one in the picture is also bend just slightly.
Larger tires as well as a little bit of play in all of the above listed components can add up to steering that is not quite what it used to be.

Unfortunately we didn't do the adjustment this weekend as hoped, but will at the ERS rallycross on the 9th. So photos and procedure will be up shortly after.

Sorry. :-( I really did kinda want to do it before the rally too, for obvious reasons.
