View Full Version : LED vs. Bulb... horn light test.

Ok, I bought a pair of 6 LED 168/194 replacement bulbs from an Ebayer in Korea (http://cgi6.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=warden_jp2002) to perform a test. I had some "blue" bulbs in there to begin with. I can't remember where I got them or who the manufaturere is (possibly PIAA, if I can remeber correctly).
Anyway, I wanted to see if quantity would make it brighter overall... as it happens, not really in the horns. Everyone was correct in saying that LEDs are more directional. I do like them, thought, and I'm assuming they should last longer than any bulb I put in there. Here are some test pics:

They came to $12.50 shipped. They did, though, take about 12 days to get here from Korea... but I have all the time in the world!
Anyone had any trouble with the local law inforcement over these?
I've seen the little import cars with blue led windsheild wiper jets on the hood, running around town aswell.

It really depends on the state that you live in... In Colorado, They are illegal and you will get stopped and told about it. I doesn't mean an automatic ticket but........

I never had in trouble in the Dallas area. With the headlights on the horn lights are harder to see than with just the driving lights on.

In Tennessee, no FLASHING colored bulbs/lenses (exept amber) to the front of the vehicle. Steady burn bulbs/lenses are O.K. per our D.A.

After driving my VX around for about two months in Oregon a cop finally pulled me over and told me that I had to change my green license plate and horn lights.
I thought that green was a safe bet as I've never seen an emergency vehicle with green lights before.
Oh, well off to something else to play with.

I think green would be OK. You may want to check with the state laws. That cop may have just have been having a slow night and decided to humor himself. This state is full of cops like that... not exactly a technological or academic mecca.
IIRC, you can't have Blue or Red. Green was never mentioned.

I have blue LEDs in the horns right now, and I am just waiting for someone to pull me over.

I know that ANY blue light in MD is a no no. I see cats all the time getting pulled over for those stupid windshield jet lights. Never understood those anyways. What purpose do they serve?!
My brother in law is a MD state inspector and says that he is ALWAYS re-inspecting cars that were pulled over for blue lights, even headlights. Guys are typically trying to pay him off just to sign the inspection ticket off, but he is by the book and tells them to beat it. There is even word that a new law may go into effect here that governs clear tail lights illegal, UNLESS they are factory. Not that I care for Altezza style lights, but that is a silly law.
I have somehow been lucky as far as having my clear signal and running lights with white bulbs. Got a ticket 2 weeks ago and the cop never said a word about anything but the speed. *whew*

For your sake, I hope your wife doesn't read the boards.
These damn petty laws are nothing more than taxes in disguise. As long as the lights aren't flashing like strobes... I really don't see what the problem is. I swear the NHTSA intentionally keeps the lighting codes outdated just so the cops can write tickets on upgrades people make so they can see better or be seen at night. Few months ago they met to reach a consensus on HIDs... after all the discussions, hearing, and meetings they decided the codes were fine the way they were and ruled not to update the code to include HIDs. *****-backwards.

Are their places that we can take our vehicles to have checked? For instance the cop pulled me over for my license plate lights, then noticed my horn lights and said "Oh you should replace those too." But wasn't as sturn about them. Almost like "I would like you too replace them."
I could see the license plate lights argument but I think the horn lights should be ok, afterall neon under the chassis is legal, as long as its not red or blue, right?
Or have they banned that at the federal level?

I know here in RI anything that is not factory lighting is a no no. Blue or Red is a huge no no but now they are even stopping people for anything that is considered distracting. if you are hang'n out in your own drive way checking out your strobes or neon lights before you go to a car show and they just happen to drive by as soon as you hit the street they'll pull you over and ask you to show them your light switch. If you do bang you got a ticket. if you don't they follow you along till you leave their area but don't be fooled there's another po po waiting for you. I have even since some peeps get their cars towed for having a 1' drop with ground effects. When I 1st got my VX, My inspection was failed for having an air intake and some other mods which I have yet to put back. Ri is not a cool with mods as Mass or even Fl are.

CAPS LOCK STUCK? SEEMS EVERY ONE OF YOUR POSTS THAT I'VE SEEN HAVE BEEN LIKE THIS. A LIITLE HARDER TO READ... KNOW WHAT I MEAN? YUP... HARD ON THE EYES LIKE YOU SAID.
They should just insititute a national law that says you can't do anything without permission... saves us the guess work and they can issue more fines... everyone's happy. Right?

Hey there Paul, For your information, this last post out of a total of 12 posts was the ONLY 1 that was posted in caps! .....................I do agree w/ you that there should be a national law in re: to types of lights that are illegal, but should,nt there be a law bout lights that are also harmful (like those really bright ones), and these are legal!.....go figure!
:fyi: ..."by the book" (As told to me by an officer) blue and red ARE legal - down here ;Db; - as long as they DONT flash. Anything that is flashing (i.e. strobes) cant not be on the roads/streets/highways ect.
but im sure many of you can relate if the cops a dique anything he feels can and will be illegal ;wtf;
but yea reading about road island makes me value more the freedom we got down here - to i guess - show off, i think ill add some more light some where in celebration....x ;)
