I just posted some information on a proposed meet for next month on the other board:

http://club.vmag.com/ubb/Forum39/HTML/004041.html

Please take a look at the thread and respond with your ideas and whether it looks like it can happen for that date and place.

That sounds like a great idea to me John. I'm pretty sure I won't have any problem making that. Maybe this time we will actually go riding around or something, unlike Fla. We were under previous obligation then or we would have stayed longer. Whatever plans you come up with will be fine with me. Just let us know what we need to do or bring. ;Dy;

Awesome!

Remind me to tell you about my lil' cabin outside Ellijay sometime. 25-miles from the Teneessee, NC, Ga border. And a short haul to a rough ridin' Forest Service road to the beginnning of the Appalachian Trail.

Rabun Gap, in Rabun County is in the extreme NorthEast corner of GA. Over 70 percent of the county is either National or State forest - so lots of great forest roads. RC happens to be the wetest spot in GA - so there is abundant creeks, streams, rivers, and lakes - and even a gorge to descend. Population of the entire county is around 20,000. More info coming ...

Count me in from Nashville. Maybe some of us could camp out? beats driving from a motel to the park for the meet... Ideas?

We're definitely in as well, so chime in any Floridians wanting to convoy up. We'll probably leave around mid-day Friday and shoot up I-75 to Atlanta. Carlymac, if you can find some info on camping in the area please share!

There are plenty of state parks in the Rabun County area, along with some good home-cookin' eateries nearby.

You could start with this one: http://gastateparks.org/info/blackrock/

I've a cabin about 1.5 hours east of Rabun Gap, but will probably just make the 2-hour trek from Atlanta.

Lemme know if there's a caravan heading up from the city.

Black Rock Mountain state park entrance is about a mile below my house ( it's a nice drive to the top ) - they have clean campsites - and rental cabins as well. Tallulah Gorge State Park also has ample space for camping and travel trailers. I am compiling the list and will post soon. Very close by are Howard Johnsons, Holiday Inn, Shoneys INN, Comfort Suites - the usual mix, along with some local flavor places to stay as well. If enough people are interested in staying over into Sunday - then concentrating on a single hotel might yield a discount. Campsites are extremely popular in the Spring and Summer up here. I'll try to pick up the PR from the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon and post as soon as I can - along with some pics of local sites of interest - some off-road trail pics for you to think about - and restaurants.

For places to eat - what are you guy interested in ? I will post restaurant info soon too.

I will be on spring break the week before the meet and can come up early to help with the "set up" if necessary. I am very interested in camping if there's a campground in/near the area of the meet. Hell, we could have a base camp/ hospitality site for the meet. If others are interested in the camping approach chime in so we can get back to back sites. I think Joe_Black seemed interested in the camping idea. Anyhow lets get some input so we know if there are more interested in the one day only meet, a hotel based meet or a base camp... dyanni thank you for volunteering to research places to stay/eat/camp. Please advise us of your findings....out for now carlymac

We're definitely coming up late Friday straight to Rabun and will either camp or cabin, and stay through Sunday. If there's a nice site with nice facilities (all I care about is hot water showers!) then we'll tent it. We think it'd be great to do the VX camp idea. Nothing's much more social than the old campfire roundup after a great day bustin' trails!

dyanni or johnnyapollo, what is the name of the campground, state park, or national forest we are to have the meet at? It's been mentioned that camping is popular in the area so I need to make reservations asap. It seems there will be at least myself and Joe_Black camping, so any info would be helpful...thanks

I will be picking up info on the sites and availability for the week before and the week of the meet on my way home tonight. Look for info posts to start tomorrow!

Ok - I've collected most of the stuff to start publishing info today. I have one more trip to make to the campgrounds at the Tallulah Gorge park. In addition to what I post here - if any of you want some of the brochures/maps/info about the area - send me an email with your physical address and I will mail them out 2 weeks prior to the meet. I drove around yesterday shooting video and pix of all the possible places to stay and play, one more trip this morning and I am done with the camping stuff.

Tallulah Gorge State Park

Tallulah Falls & Gorge--This land of waterfalls and gorges was a fashionable resort with several upmarket hotels until 1913. But the construction of the Georgia Power Hydroelectric Dam changed the fate of the community, and the area became a bit of a ghost town. At 600 feet, Tallulah Gorge is one of the deepest and most panoramic in the east. The Cherokees believed it was inhabited by a race of "little people," and that those who ventured inside never came out. Hiking in the gorge is very strenuous. The recreational center is at the 300-acre Terrora Park and Visitor Center (tel. 706/754-7970), with picnic areas, 50 campsites with water and electrical hookups, a beach for swimming, a playground, a bathhouse, and tennis courts, along with several nature trails. Office hours are 8am to 5pm. Nightly campsite rentals cost $12 for campers with tents, $14 for those with RVs. Terrora Park is immediately north of the bridge over Tallulah Gorge on the west side of U.S. 441 in the town of Tallulah Falls.

Water releases from the DAM are scheduled during the meet.
Whitewater boating possible April 12/13 - 700 cu ft per second
Aesthetic Water releases on April 19/20 - 200 cu ft per second

I have reserved two campsites at Black Rock Mt. State Park. From April 17th - 20th, I will arrive on the 17th and anybody else who wants to come down can join me on that day or join in whenever they arrive. There is a 6 person per site rule so if there are more than 12 takers please advise me so further reservations can be made. I will set up one large (6person) tent and one small(2person) tent on one of the campsites. back to back sites are NOT guaranteed but I think I can secure back to back sites by getting there on the 17th. I know there was intrest about camping so if you want to set up on the other site advise me ASAP. If you don't have a tent or want to spend only a night or two anybody is welcome to stay in my tents (I don't bite...much heeheee). Bring a sleeping bag and I'll make room. If you do have a tent come on down and pitch it. The fee is $17.00 per night and I have deposited for two nights. We can figure the fees when we find out how many people will be there, it will certainly be less expensive than a hotel room. There is water, electricity, showers and even cable hookups at the sites so this won't be primitive. Many thanks to Dyanni for doing the legwork, and to Johnnyapollo for launching the meet. I hope to do my part by setting up a hospitality site. Please post if you are interested in the camping approach. The more the merrier....If you have questions PM me from this forum as I will be able to check them from work or home. ;Db;

OK, I know it's still a month away but, I need a headcount for people who are planning to camp at Black Rock Mountain state park. It fills up fast in the spring. I recieved a confirmation letter from Ga state parks and they have a two tent per site rule. When I made the reservations they said six people per site, Which is still true so long as they sleep in two tents. Anyhow it's no biggie I just need to know how many people want to pitch there own tents. So I can figure how many sites will be needed. I have two already... So far I have tentatively (get it..."tentatively") myself arriving on thursday the 17th...Forgetful/wifey, skullcap/company and Joe_Black/fiancee arriving on friday the18th. Coop considering a cabin And gruven (the new Nashville VXer) contemplating the meet all together. gruven you need to come...Hope I haven't forgotten anyone? If so let me know.

If you wan't a site away from the group or a cabin that's fine too. Just call the reservation phone # 1-800-864-7275. Remember this park is one of Georgia's spring jewels and will fill up quickly!
If you wan't to camp with the group...Again let me know and there will be room for all...See You at the Gap!! carlymac

P.S. both carlemccoy2@msn.com (home) and mccoyc@k12tn.net (work) are up and running or you can PM me through this forum

Lots of thanks to everyone working to make this meet happen and getting the info on all the details. We have a 6 man tent that we have never used or even set up, but, it has one main tent with 2 smaller tents (one on either side) all connected. So if anyone wants to use one or both sides it's available.
Thanks again.

If I bring the unit along with a cordless drill and some tools, are there any among us who can help me add Tone's popper kit?

I watched him do an install last week, and know the instructions are posted. Short of holding my hand, I'd appreciate some guidance from one who knows the how-to. (Even Tone said there's more than one way to install the solenoid). E-mail or PM if you're game and let me know if I need any additional wire or special tools.

PS - I've also got the brake-light flasher and side-marker turn signal mods to install.

;pg; Feelin' mighty green!

Depending on where you mount the button, you may need an additional 5-6 feet of 18-20g wire

Carlymac, we are definitely there that Friday night. We've got a two-person tent to pitch, so figure that in site logistics. If you think a third site is needed from the headcount let me know if you want any help from my end. Looking forward to some runs with y'all!

I'm coming up Friday night as well. I'll sleep wherever there is room! Hey skullcap, I can help you install that kit. I'll bring along my electricians kit (has extra wire and stuff) so anyone with mods, bring the raw materials and we'll see if we can get everyone hooked up!

Looking forward to this one.

O.K. Gang, Here's the latest.
I have reserved a third site. As the logistics stand today we have enough tents to max out two sites. So we now have a third site reserved for further guests/tents. I am still going down on thurs. the 17th to set up a greeting area and try to get three sites together. I will bring a set of horseshoes, so practice up.
As far as mods, between this group we could proabably build a VX from the ground up. johnnyapollo is terribly savvy with mods and is a VERY gracious host. I too will bring my "tool box" and I have installed all the mentioned mods on my VX.
If anybody plays a guitar, ukulele, anything bring it. Hell, I guess even a banjo would be O.K. we are, afterall in rural Georgia (squeal like a pig..boy). hehee
dyanni, I usually load my hitch mount carrier with firewood but I kinda think thats a LONG way to haul wood. Do you know of anywhere to get firewood locally? Oh...and while I've got you are you spending the night with us in the woods or will you commute from home? THANKS AGAIN dyanni for all the work to help make this possible!!
I just got everything confirmed We have 2 sites from 04-17-03 to 04-19-03, and 1 site from 04-18-03 to 04-20-03 for people leaving on sunday. more sites can be added if needed.

See Ya' at the Gap...carlymac

dyanni
03/25/2003, 03:44 PM
As you wind your way up through Rabun county, you will see stacks of firewood by the road near small outbuildings. If you stop - generally someone will be there to sell. At most of the Grocery store parking lots you will see a pickup sitting near the edge of the parking lot - generally, that is for sale too. When I head home this weekend I will scope out precise locations for your incendiary procurement.

I am out of state at the moment - Raliegh NC today - Houston TX tomorrow thru Friday - and Austin TX on Mon/Tue next week. When I come home I will start posting vids of the trails I captured around the area.

I am trying to negotiate my way OUT of having to be in New Orleans the week of the meet - Will keep you updated ...

I want a tailgate popper. Where do I get one, does anybody have one that they can bring to the meet? What supplies do I need to install it? I also want luggage racks if anybody has those for sale.
looking forward to it.

forgetful:

Try and relate the name Tone Monday to memory. You can see his informative posts all over these forums and at V-mag.

Tone has a site at http://tonemonday.com/ where you can find a whole cadre of mods from the basics to the basically extreme. All of them have been tailored to fit the VX.

I think they run about $75. A very low price when you consider the convenience it affords.

I was in Austin, last week, where I met Tone and a few Texas-based VXers. So, I'll be bringing my popper kit to Black Rock in hopes of gaining assistnace with the installation. If you can get a popper kit, in time for the mid-April meet, maybe we can have a popper party!?! Champagne seems like an appropriate choice to toast the new installation ;Dp;

HI GUYS,

I live in Columbia, SC just a couple hours away from
the upcoming April VX meet/ camping site.

I have a 2000 foxfire red mica VX, purchased in July 2002.

I would like to join the festivities at Black Rock Park.
The meet appeals to me because I want to meet other
VX owners. As far as I can tell I'm the only one in Columbia
SC with a VX. i have lots of questions for you pros.

I have installed Tone's hitch and would like to install
the popper kit too. I noticed that some other people
would be doing this too. Great.

(BTW...I have camped a lot in SC and it is my experience that
putting 3 small tents on a 2-tent site doesn't get us in
trouble.)

Well guys I am not gonna be able to make it...

Flying home to NY see the family that week and will not be back till the 20th, sorry.

Have a kick *** time and take lots-o-pictures!

Blah,
Dave

carlymac
03/26/2003, 04:47 PM
Well Cyrk, we see which family your picking...No man, just kidd'in. Wish you could make it but I understand. I'm lucky enough to be able to visit my family any time. You'll be missed but enjoy the old hood.
As for Lori, Bring it on girl. I've never seen a foxfire in "real life". You seem to be interested in the camping scene so when shall I mark your arrival. Thurs.4/17, Fri.4/18, or Sat.4/19. I PROMISE you won't meet a better group of people. They say "a stranger is just a friend you have'nt met yet". Anywho, come on down and bring anybody you want.
Isn't It cool the way this group fills in the gaps for one another. It seems to be that way for everything from a simple question about what windshield washer fluid to buy to somthing as earth shattering as world events.
We will miss Cyrk...but...will get to meet Lori.
Lori, email, PM, or post your intentions and...
We'll All See Ya' at the Gap...carlymac

I am going to be a camper at the April GA meet.

I have been a major lurker on the Vmag and vehicross.info
websites. It is somewhat intimidating for me (for some reason)
to post. But I'm getting braver.

I have a work commitment Friday 4/18 but may sneak out by 3pm
to get to the campsite by dark. If I have to stay until 5 at work
I probably will still come Friday night, I'll just have to pitch a tent
in the dark.

I am going to bring good food to cook for everyone.
I love camping! I will probably bring my dog too.

I have already started writing down all my VX questions
for all you pros.....

gruven

carlymac- it was good talking to you last night!
I might have to make the journey with you on Thursday & help prepare the site.

Sounds like this is shaping up to be quite an adventure. I may now order my popper as Tone can have it here in time.

Lori- glad another newbie will be there as I too have been a long time lurker. I totally relate to your post and I too have a long list!

I was thinking of bringing up some king salmon that I caught in Alaska for us campers. Wondering if that might fit into any dinner plans Friday nite? Any takers?

MMMMMMMMMMMM...SAL-MON...:homer:

Sounds great gruven, Even though I'm an Eagle Scout I still can't put up a dining fly by myself. However, poppers I can do.
Looks like we have ourselves a little convoy, coming from Nashville...come on back!! Oh well forgetful probably gets it.
Lori, got your email and am looking SO forward to the meet.

Hey johnnyapollo, have you heard anything from BigMike or the rest of the Atl. clan?

johnnyapollo
03/27/2003, 01:16 PM
BigMike's wife gave birth to boy... he's been super busy. He normally works weekends but since that's a holiday weekend, he's hoping to make it. I'm making it for sure and will bring some additional grubb for the grill.

Coop will be there for sure. Andy has been deployed to Iraq (his VX is in storage down in Jacksonville). I'm thinking Travis will make it but I haven't talked to him lately and Dave Sirkin is out of town. That leaves Donny (who I hope can be there since he's done most of the research), skullcap (who looks like he's coming) and BodyProsPT. I don't think I've left anybody out (veryrandy and PantherBlackVX have both moved).

Hey Joe, who is coming up from Florida? This is still shaping up to be a good meet!

Something I've always enjoyed when doing a group camp-out, is to plan at least one communal "potluck" meal. Of course, it means having to prepare a dish large-enough for the gathering, but it also means not having to plan provisions for as-many meals, and we get to share in the making and eating of the feast.

It sounds to me like we might have the makings of a little feast. If each person attending can add something to the table, I'll conjure up something in the salad/salsa department that can be consumed with chips and beer.

Of course, then we must decide on which meal to roll-out the cloth dinner napkins.

I haven't heard anything from the Florida contingent at all on coming up. I'll do a direct email from the list we got together at the Orlando meet and see who's interested. We're hoping to bug out of here about noon that Friday which should put us up there about 7PM or so. We'll camp through Sunday as we're meeting some Atlanta friends for lunch/dinner on our way back.

Anyone got an idea for the average temp at Black Mountain? Trying to decide which sleeping bags to bring so we don't freeze/sweat too much. As for food, let us know something we could bring that would survive about eight hours in the VX or we'll just pick something up on the way. Of course we could always bring some liquid refreshment! :homer:

skullcap

As a resident, Dyanni will probably have a better take on climate, but I've a cabin in another section of the Blue Ridge about an hour west of Black Rock, and at a lower elevation. So, I would think that, in mid-April, Black Rock's elevation could still be visited with light overnight frost. (The latest I've seen winter weather in the North Georgia mountains is April 4, but know frost can even hit Atlanta up until April 15th). I'd anticipate average daytime highs in the upper 60's to mid 70's and night time lows in the upper 40's to mid 50s.

Given that the dogwoods and azaleas are just about to burst-open here in Atlanta, and knowing the mountains are at least two-weeks later in spring, we should arrive in time for every VX to take on a yellow-green irridecense. With all of the colors due to show-up, maybe we can have a contest as to whos VX does the best job of camoflauging under the pollen

Black Rock has some excellent 6-8 mile dayhikes. So bring some good footwear if you plan on exploring the wildflowered trails, which are sure to please. Orchids, lilies and blue phloxes should be littering the forest floor in mid-April. (Bet you can't tell I'm an ecologist).;Db;

Lori

Every year I buy some very large farm-raised shrimp from
a biologist who dabbles in the science of shrimp farming.
It is clean and tastes great.

I bought 50 lbs and still have a lot left. So my contribution to
the meal(s) will be shrimp...you can boil 'em, fry 'em, put
'em in gumbo, in soup, in sandwiches.... (...do you
recognize my lame imitation of Bubba Gump?!)

I was surprised at the cool forecast. I would have
predicted a higher night temperature.

Yes my foxfire is covered in yellow pollen. I sprayed it
clean yesterday morning and created some wonderful
water spots for the pollen to congregate... Oh well.

I've ordered Tone's popper plus the wiring for his
trailer hitch (hitch installed already) and will be bringing
them with me. I'm most interested in the popper install.
(Don't really need the elec wiring until I find me a used Aliner
camper...)

As time approaches, we should get a head count on
the campers. Looking forward to the event!

I skipped "VXer" and made a contribution the day they dubbed me "zoid." The service and cameraderie provided by Vehicross.info is unsurpassed in my internetting experience.

I bought my VX because of what I learned here, and the confidence that I'd have a community of peers with whom to find support. Of course, I've also learned about some of the tickieness of these little beasts, and found invaluable information for my so-far brief ownership experience in these forums.

My heartfelt thanks go out to Moncha and the folks who moderate the forums to help make this a place many of us tune-in to every day. I hope I don't need a recovery program for this.

We'll still be there friday afternoon. And yes, I got the ( come on back ). Very proper CB talk. I'm proud of you. I'm waiting for my tailgate popper to come in. I've been toying with some grille billeting. I've installed it on mine and...I likey!!! I don't know how to post a pic but I'll try to find a similar pic. It looks alot like the VX-2 and VX-4 Grille. And I remember someone on here or vmag doing somthing very similar. Anywho, when I find a pic or link or something I'll post. The beauty is this mod is inexpensive($15-$20). I have two extra grille sets already cut out. And if there's an intrest I can make more and bring them to the meet... I know...PICS. I'm working on it, and will post as soon as I find something. O.k., after a search I located the pic of the grille mod. I hope I'm not violating any copywrite laws. But the material I've found looks a lot like the grille in this pic.

If your interested in my version I can make some and bring them to the meet. I'm not tring to go into the mods business. Heck, I wish I had the insight of Ron, Tone and other visionaries in this family, but I don't. Just toying around and thought I would share my find.

All,

I took my wife and daughter for a ride today.....we decided to take our Trooper up to Black Rock Mountain State Park and check it out befoer our meet there.

Well......let me tell you...........it turned cold today and when we arrived we found snow on the mountain!!! I've been through Mountain City a hundred times and never knew this park was even there. Great views from the summit.

I tried to make cottage reservations for the weekend of April 17th, but every one is booked. So, I guess I will just come up for the day on Saturday. It's only about a 75 mile drive for me from Buford.

I looking forward to seeing everyone.:D

Coop, Hell you say...SNOW!! Well, we've got 3 more weeks until the meet. I think the weather will break before then. As for your cabin, sorry to hear they were all booked up. Your still welcome in the campsite if you wish. If not, Glad to here you'll still come down for the day. See ya' at the GAP!

I have just conferred with MonchaVX about the factory foglight and rear hatch release switches. I now have the switch diagram so if any of you have the switches bring them along for the install. Tones popper comes with a small yellow release button that I have mounted in the corner of the glove box frame on mine. So If you want the factory release switch they can be purchased through St.Charles Isuzu for $41.67. I think that's kinda big $$$ but to each his/her own. If you don't want the switch you don't need it, the button Tone provides works fine.
So far we plan on installing: poppers, Flashing high stop light modulators, front side marker turn signals and maybe a trailer light pig-tail. I also have the billet grille inserts if anybody is interested. $15.00 per set. But please post, PM, or email me if you want the grille inserts so I can produce enough to go around. I have compiled a notebook with instructions for most of the mods explained on the forums. See Ya' at the Gap....carlymac

Just to keep up the geek-appearance, I'll bring my laptop along with a CD/Vid Tone gave me from last year's Moab meet. I also have the 2000 VX shop -manual on CD. It loads nicely on my laptop.
I've got the popper, brake light flasher, and side marker mods to do.

Oh! And I found two red Hotwheels VXs at the WalMart in Frankfort, KY. I thought they were out of production, but appears there is some backstock. Still looking for a black VX to adorn my fuzzy box.

Hope this helps until I can figure out posting pics. I also have 4-5 inserts made now and should have a few extras at the meet. I already have a set installed on my VX and I like the look alot.

There has been lots of rain in Rabun County over the past few weeks - and that has enhanced the greenery - and made wretched the offroad dirt trails. I took a trip out to one of the "easy" ones identified to me by the National Forest Service and got stuck yesterday. How is this possible with such a small mud puddle .... ( newbie with mud ) I was heartily disappointed at the stock tire performance in mud.

This link with take you to a video by end of day 4/8/2003
Easy trail - too much MUD ( CLICK ) (http://www.myvx.com/images/stuck.mpg)

I think - since rain is forecast for most of this week - that those interested in some light offroad should stick to the gravel kind. There is a nice 4WD-only trail that leads from the Tallulah Gorge State Park through some nice countryside - less than 4 miles or so - with a really good/steep incline down to Lake Tugalo on the Georgia side. I think that would be a really pretty place to get some VX lineup shots by the lake. That spot can also be hiked on foot from the TGSP visitors center if you're interested ( about 5 miles ) I've even seen guys pitch a tent down by the lake there.

http://www.myvx.com/images/lake1.jpg

Another option - I dont have a photo yet - but will test that route out next weekend, is a quick drive up to Sky Valley ( Ga's only ski resort ) - about 5 minutes from Black Rock - then get off on a 4WD only trail that terminates near the top of Rabun Bald mountain. Its only a short hike up from there to the top of Georgias second tallest mountian at 4696 ft. This trail is just under 3 miles and is considered a strenuous hike.

That's not mud, THAT'S CLAY! LOL! Yeah, that stuff will load up most treads and make for slippery going. Makes me wonder if I should get some 16" wheels for my Mud Terrains left over from my RS. Hmmm... If only there was enough room in the VX!

carlymac

You got to say somthing for a person who takes the bull by the horns!! dyanni ain't skeered...as the say in east TN.
yep, clay is a WHOLE diffrent ballgame than our western counterparts deal with. I've found putting snow chains on then airing down works pretty well in clay mud. Kitty litter (to stiffen the mud) also works. Or if all else fails a good old fashion tow strap hooked to your buddies VX will do the trick. But sometimes Ya gotta hit it runnin!! and blast yourself through the hole.
I still have the stock tires with 37K on them so it wouldn't take as much to load my tread. But I'm game for whatever the masses want to do.
I have spoken to gruven and we are going down on thursday the 17th to set up camp. He is going to bring some para wings or something to set up for cover. He said he would post when he had all the particulars.
Thanks again for the recon. dyanni....You Da' Man!!

Wether.com is a good resource - I use Accuweather - especially when it comes to precip - has been more reliable predicting weather for our wet little corner of the state. The following link will take you out through 8 days beyond the weather.com site - less accurate that far out, but at least interesting. Interesting indeed! Might be able to put some firewood to use.
I usually don't even trust the weather I see with my own two eyes here in Nashville- but good to get a general idea nonetheless.

Great 'STUCK' movie (& pics)! Hope it gets a chance to dry out some...

As time grows closer we can work on last logistics- make sure carlymac and myself get a proper number of sites together, etc.
dyanni, did you eye any 'perfect' spots?

My popper & turn-light mod arrived today ready for the install-fest...

Weather forecasting in Georgia? 3-days out, MAX. Otherwise,m don't trust the forecast!

Climate is a non-linear chaotic system.

For that matter so is water suspended in a silt/clay matrix.
(It may not be as snazzy as a 2.5 ton winch, but I'm bringing my come-along. Hmm, now to find a discreet place to stow it in some of the VX's wasted precious space).

I stopped by the campgrounds to check out their campsites again last Saturday. They have fully opened the camp up now - so all sites are available. dyanni, Coop or anybody that knows the park,
I thought gruven and myself would try to get three sites together that were near a parking area so the people arriving on saturday could park with the flock. Considerations also include: large enough sites to accommodate everyone and their boxes of new mods, three sites far enough away so as not to be within eyeshot of the rangers station..Hey-hey BOOboo and proximity to the restrooms/showers..girly amenities. If you remember seeing a group of sites or area of the park that fits the bill please post so gruven and I have an idea of areas to seek out first...Thanks

THANKS dyanni,
I'm chomping at the bit, todays my last day at work until April 21st.

OK, Carlymac:

You mean to tell me the A-post is actually good for something besides directing water onto the floorboards? I'm having a little trouble finding your post about the antenna relocation. I guess I'll have my VX all-over the campground parking lot before all is said and done.

Has anyone notified the park superintendant of our gathering? Maybe invited him/her to stop by?

I'd think they'd be excited to play host for such an unusual gathering of outdoor enthusiasts.;Db;

ok - so Saturday Mid-day has turned into Saturday night - but I have been out rippin' up the country side and have the pics to prove it. Look for them to start showing up tonight.

Pix/video of Campsites
Pix of large mostly empty parking lots for the line-ups.
Pix/video of the excellent offroad trip I took today up to Rabun Bald - now I really know what off-road is like.

Each of the following images - as I post them - are Clickable for a larger version ...

What to expect in the Big city of Clayton ...

http://www.myvx.com/images/claytonS.jpg (http://www.myvx.com/images/claytonB.jpg)

Something you may not expect ... Speed zones change on a dime in the series of small towns that dot 23/441 through Rabun County. Pay attention to speed signs - they can take you from 55 to 35 in a very short distance. The home of Black Rock Mountain state park is in Mountain City. They have no city taxes. Their government runs completely on the fines collected from speeders. Word to the wise!

http://www.myvx.com/images/speedS.jpg (http://www.myvx.com/images/speedB.jpg)

As for places to meet-up at - we could go for the very public, but mostly empty parking lots at either Ingles or WalMart at either end of town.

WalMart
http://www.myvx.com/images/wallmartS.jpg (http://www.myvx.com/images/wallmartB.jpg)
Ingles
http://www.myvx.com/images/inglesS.jpg (http://www.myvx.com/images/inglesB.jpg)
The Visitor Center on Black Rock - also has adequate parking for the expected crew - AND views to boot.
http://www.myvx.com/images/visS.jpg (http://www.myvx.com/images/visB.jpg)

Any camping lot above 10 looked good to me at Black Rock. Here is a shot of 16 ...
http://www.myvx.com/images/log16S.jpg (http://www.myvx.com/images/log16B.jpg)
Lots 18/20/22 ... Are all side by side and well situated ...

I made the trip up to Rabun Bald ( Ga's second highest peak ) and had a blast in the process. True fun off-road driving - over ruts-n-rocks. Made for an exciting climb to the top. Rabun Bald is a short trip from Black Rock and the view/ride is well worth this off - road adventure.
http://www.myvx.com/images/rabunbaldS.jpg (http://www.myvx.com/images/rabunbaldB.jpg)
http://www.myvx.com/images/bigskyS.jpg (http://www.myvx.com/images/bigskyB.jpg)

And the trip up/down the 4WD only access is fun ...
http://www.myvx.com/images/myvxS.jpg (http://www.myvx.com/images/myvxB.jpg)

It has been dry now for a couple days - and SUNNY. I had forgetten how fair-skinned burns so quickly and am now sporting a bright red face. - anyways - forecast is looking good pretty much through meet day. Today I was out and visited WarWoman Dell - a picnic/gathering place that is intersected by the Bartram trail ( MiLeS of trail ) and spotted this covered picnic area. Lots of natural parking.

http://www.myvx.com/images/warwomanS.jpg (http://www.myvx.com/images/warwomanB.jpg)
One of the trails leads to this middle-earth looking stairway up to pre-civil war railroad project. Whole area surrounded by noisy stream. Very relaxing.
http://www.myvx.com/images/warwoman2S.jpg (http://www.myvx.com/images/warwoman2B.jpg)

Ok - ran out of time with the movies - but they look awful shrunk down to web size anyway. Last comment I will probably get to make b4 meet is a couple of drives that you must take while in Rabun. IMHO, the road around and between Lake Rabun, Lake Seed, and Lake Burton is not to be missed - specially if you like gawking at multi-million dollar homes sitting on tiny lots. Also the drive around the Wolffork Rd. loop ( takes you from 23/441 around the Wolffork Valley and brings you back to 23/441 right at the Rabun Gap Nachoochee shool ( the most beautiful high school campus I have ever seen ) These roads can be accessed from 23/441 which is the main drag through the 4 major cities in Rabun county - all paved - all a joy to drive. The following pic was taken yesterday ( after I cleaned up my ride ) at Lake Seed.

Still have extra tent room if anybody needs it. But I think we will be leaving Sat. night. ( not written in stone though ).

I've never been part of a group before where the members show such an enthusiasm for the same thing and show concideration and friendship toward each other. I'm so glad I found this site.

I've found another vx in my area. I've talked with the owner a couple times. I told him about the site but I don't think he has joined yet for some reason that I just can't understand. I know he visited here and looked at all the forums. He has 2 other wrecked vx that he is going to make one good one. I told him if I was doing it, I would pick an awsome non-vx factory color, and make sure I could get the same color in leather( or vinyl ) for the interior seats. Yeah, another paintballer. I went one time with my daughter's boyfriend and his dad out in the woods just kinda of playing around and I got hooked.

I was gonna take you up on your offer of the sleeping bag Carl but I think we are going to really ruff it, Feather down quilt and an air mattress will be pretty ruff, but I think we can handle it.LOL

I still haven't sent in my contribution to the site.I had a bad experience with paypal once on ebay. 2 days after using it, someone tryed to charge a $1000 on my card. I never had any trouble before that. I know lots of people use it everyday without trouble, but I will never used it again. So I just have to snail mail it in. I'm still a nobee until then.

Jonny Apollo, I was wondering if you won that vx poster that I saw you bid on at ebay? It was pretty neat.

Well, I'm counting the hours till the gap. See ya there.......

Hey Shawn,

No, I didn't win that poster. You win some you lose some. There was a neat promo booklet this week too, but I let Donny have it, seeing as he had the high bid (did throw in a token bid at one point when he got outbid, but let it go). I hate bidding against people I know... seems un-American or something!

I did pick up an extra VX electrical troubleshooting manual, if you or anyone at the meet needs it. I've also got some other extras I'll be bringing... anyone need some slightly dented rear cladding?

I've got a bag and some blankets... may want to stake out some tent space if you have any to spare, Carl!

I plan on leaving work after lunch and driving up to the park on Friday. See you at the meet!

I was digging out my camping gear also.
Question: Does anyone have a gadget to inflate air mattresses?
(I used to be able to sleep w/o air mattress but then I got
spoiled after I used one on a week long trip last summer.)

I am bringing the (yet unopened) box with Tone's popper kit.
Question: I read on an earlier post that some additional
wire is needed for popper install. Is this true?

Hopefully, I will make it to campsite before dark on Friday.
I'm looking at a 3 hour drive and hope to get away from work
around 3pm.

I'm bringing lots of shrimp for cookout Sat (?) nite.
Question: Do I need to bring a big pot for boiling H20?

I’m spoiled as well so you’re sure to find a small air compressor/inflator in my trunk. It becomes handy some time after trail riding as well. I've Uploaded the first batch of photos from the meet.

A total of 11 VXes showed up by Saturday PM, with 5 states represented. We all had a great time, with mods, off-road, convoy and a country-style lunch to boot! Carl did a great job setting up camp on top of Black Top Mountain. The fog and rain cleared by Saturday so I was able to get these shots (I left Saturday PM). We even had a surprise visit from the DNR - and the guy was driving a VX! There was another guy camping who owns a VX living in Florida, who didn't know about the boards and this meet! I think we freaked him out!

More info, pics and video to come!

What an awesome get-together!! I can't thank Johnnyapollo enough for helping me get-up the nerve to begin making some mods. And he stayed well into the dark on Saturday working on Tone's popper installation. (John, I look forward to the chance to show you my gratitude. Either to you or, perhaps, by someday helping another VX-owner install their first mods.)

Carlymac pulled-off a great gathering! (Dyanni, while we've not met, you were sorely missed.)

Gruven caught and grilled some awesome salmon.

Lori (and company) showed us what Firefox looks like, along with a gallon-of-POT, and a feast of shrimp.

Niv & Co., Joe_Black & Co., VXtreme & Co., Forgetful & Co., and Coop, also contributed to the fare and fellowship of the weekend.

We also had a nice suprise visit by an on-duty DNR water quality specialist (a lurker ;wtf; ) who dropped by with his wife in a Kaiser Silver to round-out the North American array of colors.

Again, my thanks to everyone who showed-up to make this a meet to remember. Moreover, thanks to VehiCROSS.info! I decided to buy my VX after discovering the community I found here, and because of the dedication and diversity of VX-ers who show their pride, both inwardly and outwardly, in being a breed apart.

I've taken the liberty of removing a few unwanted power lines from some of my photos and have posted them at: http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=536&si=&thumb=1&page=3&sort=4&perpage=12&ppuser=&stype=

I want to thank everyone for making this meet happen. Kathy and I had an awesome time. The fish Gruven cooked up was very very good. So was the corn ( stuff ) skullcap brought and the cookies Niv and Rachel brought. We left Sat. early evening so we didn't get to try the shrimp. I wish more people had gone offroading, but I understand wanting to get the mods in. Niv + Rachel , Joe + Cathy and myself +Kathy had a really fun time, even though I broke my front plate and neon frame when I got stuck, but it was worth it. ( maybe )

I can't wait for the next one. Lets make it soon.;Dy;

All I can say is, you all looked like you had a great time! I love the comaraderie. Everything looked so special and very prepared. Congrats to all of you for such a successful event!

Just spent the last hour reading the posts and viewing all the beautiful photos. They really capture the spirit of our wonderful event. Thanks!

I especially liked forgetful's photos of the off roaders. (You might remember I could not go because I was busy providing moral support to carlymac as he was installing my popper! ;Dp; )
And scullcap's (aka plantman) photos of the misty skies and beautiful mountains surrounding our fabulous vehicles are spectacular.

I thought everyone was the nicest bunch of strangers that I've ever camped with...well we're not strangers anymore (but still strange, and proud of it!) Bennie and Moobie slept the whole way home, took a 3 minute "break" once we got home, and then went back to sleep inside the house. I've never seen them this tired!

All day I've been composing (in my mind) a "thanks for the memories" post about the meet. (Just some silly things that make me smile.) Thanks to all for making me feel comfortable and welcome in the group. Waking up this morning among such kind folks and in the misty GA mountains was one of the best Easter mornings I can remember....

Thanks to all from Kathy and I for a fantastic meet! We really enjoyed putting faces/names/handles together, making new friends and learning all sorts of new stuff. It was WELL worth the drive! Plus we had Rachel and Niv in their Astral for most of the journey helping turn heads as we drove. I've posted our pics in the Events gallery so you can see a few different angles of the same stuff. LOL! Be sure to click for the large views, some of the backgrounds are beautiful (not to mention the awesome VXs!). If I can figure out how to do it I'll post some clips from the video we shot as well. Again, thanks for the greatest of times!!!

Well Gang we pulled it off,
On thurs. gruven and myself drove through "redneck hell" to get to the site. Thanks to mapquest we almost drove 64 miles out of Cleveland Tn. to hwy 76( should have been 6.4 mi.). When we arrived at the gap there was a thick fog looming over the mountain, a thick fog we would all become very familiar with. In conjunction with narrow mountain roads my catch phrase was born " gruven..tell momma I love her". We set up camp in the pouring down rain. At that point I was becoming a bit concerned...After the tents were up gruven and I talked long into the night about profound topics and this funny little truck we all love. With the morning I discovered why my tent came with a bottle of seam sealer. mid-day fri. I heard the familiar growl of a laboring 3.5 L and through the fog broke a proton silhouette, forgetful had arrived. Then the chrome wielding astrial we all know to be Coop's coop. Next, VXtreme's REAL H.I.D.'s pierced the fog like a knife. After a short time johnnyapollo the VX Godfather of the southeast showed. As I was fumbling through the fog I noticed a figure pitching a tent. It was Lori the quiet girl and Bennie & Moobie her precious pooches. I didn't even know she was there. Later we were advised by the friendly neighborhood ranger, Georgia has a state law against pitching a tent on the grass in a state park, go figure. Next, skullcap came on the scene in his ebony like a "dark angel". All we lacked were the Floridians. Then the cell phone rang and moments later, not unlike the last election, Florida was in. Joe_Black and Niv rolled in like a miniature citrus bowl parade. It didn't take them long to change out of their shorts into pants. Saturday morn VXtreme and I went trout fishing and the rest caught up. After the lunch run some of us worked on mods and some went for a trail ride. Either way VXes were being altered...ask forgetful. Sunday was spent breaking camp and saying our good-by's. The weekend was one of the best memories I have to date involving the VX. That funny little truck that bridges all sociological gaps. Heck, come to think of it, that wasn't fog after all...Our heads were in the clouds....THANKS GANG!! carlymac

Joe Black, how could you post that picture of me. When you end up with snap shots like that, your supposed to erase them, not show them. I guess you didn't get any snaps of the offroading. If you can't post a video of it, make me a copy and mail it to me. I'll PM you with the address. Just let me know. We had a great time getting dirty with you and Niv. Find some good roads in FLA. to play around on and maybe all of us can get together again.

LOL! I said it was a poster Shawn! We just did the video out on the trail as it seemed you and Kathy had the photo situation well under control. I'll try and get some clips on the page here. Gruven and I will try and get DVD's to everyone at the meet so keep your fingers crossed on the collaboration. He's the talent, I'm just providing some raw material and grunt work. ;eekg;

Carlymac, excellent post! Gave me laughs and grins for the rest of the afternoon!

wow- what a blast...
I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend time with such a fine caliber of people- a most impressive, intelligent and diverse crowd. Those VX's sure know how to pick their peoples!

dyanni- yes you were there in spirit. If it weren't for your pictures & suggestions for sites I might have been responsible for delivery of carlymac's last will & testiment. I think we defined 'negative visibilty' uopn our arrival. Thanks for the legwork.

carlymac- your hospitality was second to none. All of your small touches helped to make the trip the success that it was. Maybe next time we'll use an atlas instead of WrongQuest, LostQuest or whatever it was? Thanks again.

To everyone else- thanks for showing this newbie such a great time! I am now smiling bigger than ever when looking at my VX. That is, except for trying to figure out how to pay for all of the mods in my future! One can never have too many friends in this short life and I feel as though I have gained some new ones.

I will PM my address for contributions to the Atlanta/TN DVD. Off to buy more drive space tomorrow! Some great shots of the VX train through the mountains courtesy of johnyapollo's sunroof.

Well, much has been said ( wow carlymac! I didn’t realized there’s a poet in you) and pictures were posted for what is defiantly going to be a great memory for both Rachel and myself (luckily, there were no “new additions” to the family along the way…). I didn’t imagine that camping with a bunch of strangers could turn out to be so much fun! It was well worth the 10+ hours of driving each way which we shared with Joe Black and Kathy. carlymac and gruven, oh man! You certainly set the bar for the future meets! dyanny, thanks so much for your leg work. I sure hope to meet you on the next meet. Thank you all for your company and contributions to make this meet such a successful one. This could not have taken place without this web site, so I think a special thanks is also in place for the supporters and administrator.
C U all soon! (End of June, Ocala, Fl ??) :cool: ;Db; ;Db;

AKA: VXtreme & Co.

Suzanne and I had a great time in North Ga. As you all can see from the pictures, the meet was a wonderful success. Carlymac did a great job with the site prep. Grooven, GREAT salmon, and chutney. Soory we missed the shrimp on Sat night. Needless to say, we were on top of the world(though you could not see much of it).
It was a real treat to meet people who are brought together simply because we find unique things attractive(VX's). It was interesting to me that people from such diverse backgrounds, professions and lifestyles, can so much in common.

It was fun to watch the other campers drive by with that oh so familiar ;eekp; look on there faces. I even caught a couple of them coming back for a ;eekp; ;eekp; .
Suzanne and I hope we can stay in touch in the future to our new found friends. You are all invited to Pa. in the future as well.

Stay well, and happy trails ;Dy; ;Dy;
