View Full Version : Central WA Dunes!

Central WA near Beverly Dunes (about 12 miles S. of Vantage, WA), April 17. Many acres of dunes, some sweeping up the side of mountain so high, most rigs can't make it to the top. A trail ride to the top of Sentinal Mtn that includes a butt-puckering .3 mile climb segment. The view from the top is
rewarding. After that we can head east on the Sentinal Mtns crest, to find our way back down to the "rutted area" from the East, to exercise suspension-travel and ground clearance.

The silver VX in the foreground of the top pic is mine. That's as far as I could make it in reverse, tires at 10psi, full throttle, with the smaller aftermarket pulley on my s/c. It's 140 miles(225 km for canucks :p )/2 hours from Seattle via I-90.

Sounds like fun. Count me in for the 16th. Stock VX's can make this one.

Sounds like fun... I'll try to make it out to this one. Saturdays are usually better for me, but I could probably make either day.

Glad to have you along, Kyle. Looks like you've made a lot of mods on your VX, I'm looking forward to seeing it.
Dog, I new you'd be on it!
This may be a VX-only run. I posted on the 'Wire, but no one from PNWIOR or otherwise, have responded. All makes/models are welcome.

The date is set for Sunday April 17. Wet-siders meet at North Bend McDonald's at 7:45. Redezvous with east-siders at the Schwanna store/gas station at 10:15. Looks like 2-3 VXs, Wrangler, Toy P/U, Ford P/U, and maybe Bronco, Toy/Jeep hybrid beast, Rodeo, and 4Runner. You never know until the day comes!

I don't think I have any plans for that weekend. I had a great time in the past years. Hi Baxman, Hi Tru  I know it's been a while. I'll plan on making the trip.

I'm looking forward to the meet. Do you have directions to the North Bend Mickey Dee's? I'm only familiar with the Tacoma/Ft.Lewis area.

North on I-5 to HWY 18 toward North Bend/I-90. Go E on I-90 about 3 or 4 miles, take the 2nd North Bend exit (Factory Outlet Mall, #31, I think). Go left under the fwy, take the 1st right and McD's;puke: is on the right. See you next Sunday at 7:45 :coolb:

Thanks, I'll be there. :D
Is most of the terrain like the picture you posted above? I'm trying to decide if the wife and 8 month old should tag along.

Would have liked to ask about tagging along for a first VX meet as a newbie, but I sign in to 3-2 Stryker and head to the field that week. Crap Crap Crap.

Great to hear from you Rory - its been about... 4? years!
kpaske:
That's pretty much it - arid and open. Very scenic this time of year. Our runs are G-rated, your family is welcome. Might be a little rough for an 8 m/o, given VX suspension.

Too bad you can't make it. I hope "the field" is Yakima and not Iraq!
nocturnalVX:
Gil, I've never seen anyone take to the sand the way you did in Moab; just look at her hanging on for dear life! Got some Great Lakes dunes to play in?

It's just local back 40 of Fort Lewis this time, next year looks like trip #3 to the "big sandbox." I should by retirement property there. Nothing like honing your driving skills on the Baghdad freeways. (I'll show you the Hummer cam video footage sometime, they slide pretty well on asphalt.)
I REALLY want to attend a VX run and meet other people with the "madness," so as soon as I can I'd like to tag along on a meet. Uncle Sam is keeping me pretty busy lately. We actually load out Sunday morning.

Too bad you can't make it... Enjoy your stay in lovely Yakistan. Perhaps we can arrange another Seattle area meet in another couple of months.

Hey guys,
I regret to inform that I'm going to have to bail on this one... A couple of things have come up that I've got to deal with this weekend. Sorry!! :( I was really looking forward to meeting some other local VXers. Perhaps like I mentioned in my previous post we can have another meet soon.

Fellas, I've got some things that require my attention so I won't be able to make the trip. I was looking forward to it but I probably won't make it. If things change I'll catch up with you there.
Sorry,
Rory

Fun trip, managed to get out in the M998 (Hummer) and shoot some ball ammo during to Live Fire Exercise which coincided with my birthday (heavy machinery and bullets are better than a cake any day)
kpaske: yeah, I'd definitely like to do a run with everyone someplace this Summer. We cover down on bright-eyed ROTC cadets for the next few months. Never thought I'd be doing this when I PCSed to the Strykers!)
Maybe sometime we can hit lunch. Like to see the rig.

bwahahaha. i was one pair of those bright eyes!
sorry for reviving this dead thread, i just did a search for 'stryker' because theres a propoga...err...marketing...err...documentary on right now on the military channel. I'll tell you this: before the summer of 2005, i didn't have a high opinion of strykers. But being at ft lewis in 2005, you learn to really appreciate those things. You stryker brigade guys were pretty enthusiatic about them and i was ridiculously impressed at how QUIET and FAST those things were.

I'm not too familiar with Strykers, are they any good in the sand? If they are, they'd have a good time at Beverly dunes!
I didn't organize a run to Beverly this year for the first time in 8 years, and I have heard some whining about it (like I'm the only one who can organize a dunes run :rolleyesg !). Is anyone interested in a trip to Beverly again? If there is interest, maybe we can put something together for late September/early October.

Love to go on a run but am stuck in Mosul till about June of next year. Would actually like to get together with a live human that owns a VX some time after that.
Runs here are a bit "different." Less off-road and more Mad Max or Aliens with the Strykers.

I'd be up for any Pacific Northwest meet in the near future. Especially once I get done with my latest round of mods! ;Db; *Sundays work best for me right now*
