I can't imagine why someone would do it unless they had absolutely no idea that the proper Isuzu 3.1 intercooled turbo diesel is readily available and would bolt right up. Some people...

I had an 86 Trooper turbo diesel that was great. It didn't exactly win any drag races, but had good torque...only issue I had with it was glow plugs.
I sold it to a friend a few yrs. back & it's still his daily driver.

Those old 1st-Gen Troopers are just awesome, especially the TD models. They still command a good price on the used market thanks in part to getting nearly 30MPG. The only weakness was that the transmission never received a good upgrade until the latter half of 1988.

The 2nd-Gen Troopers with the peppier 3.1L Intercooled Turbo Diesel may not have the visual personality of the earlier utility box, but they've got the get up and go to match the grunt...

did we get a TD in the US? i dont know about the first gens but i havent seen the hood scooped 2nd gens.

The only TD Troopers to get into the US were 1st-Gen for '86 and some in '87. It's government policy to keep the better vehicles from being imported so our domestic auto companies can be protected from collapse.
