I knew the truck was goin to be a gas guzzler when I lifted it, but this is ridiculous. I drove maybe 13 miles across todwn and back and burned almost a half of a tank of gas. Does anyone have this problem also or is there somethin wrong with my vx?? How can I get better gas mileage out of it? Help me plz any advice would be nice.
thx,

WOWEE... I 've never heard something that bad. 26 miles using half a tank of gas?? Something has to be wrong.

Mileage for a series of vehicle can vary due to any number of factors such as, but not limited to: tire size, condition, compound and pressure; weight or additional cargo; condition of engine and driveline; additional exterior drag items.

But 2.2 miles-per-gallon is pretty bad for a VX. I'd say anything consistently under 15 MPG (for a stock VX) would warrant some investigation.

Mine is lifted and I get 15-20 mpg depending on Hwy/city. I think if I was you I'd be looking for a big leak somewhere!

it is really ridiculous, It does excellent when I am on the highway but when I am drivin around town it sux gas like no tommorow. I only put a 3.5 in calmini lift on it. I could understand mabee ya know if I lifted it about ten inches if itr got that gas mileage but no just 3.5 and raised the torsion bar about another .5 or so. I guess i will try to clean the fuel injectors tonight but if there is anything else anyone can think of let me know plz.

Did it get that kind of mileage before the lift doing city driving?

Joe_Black

Did you put significantly larger tires with the lift? If so, that could affect your in-town mileage since you would have effectively changed the gearing to favor highway cruise speeds. When I put 31X10.50's on my '88 Trooper it hurt the in-town mileage, but just a little.

There's quite a few "big meat" tire folk here, so hopefully they'll chime in with actual VX experience.

With 31s on my Vx I still get no less than 15 MPG in town!

Yeah, 31's wouldn't make much difference as the stock tire diameter I think is about 30", but if he has like 33" Swampers or something with a lot of rolling resistance as well as significant diameter. It's amazing how some things increase load almost exponentially after a certain threshold.

Well at 2.2 MPG you should probably take it in. Something I have always done to vehicles with over 30K miles is do that Seafoam Treatment. It has always cleaned up my engines well and made my Vehicross get maybe a extra 2 miles to the gallon.

Time to hull the sea anchor (nautical term for bringing in the parachute-like-device the prevents movement in a stiff wind). Sheesh! If I was getting milage like that I'd have that baby lowered to about 1/2 off the asphalt.

I am running 33's and see 10mpg city and 13 mpg highway

Something is seriously wrong if you aren't exagerating, or your fuel guage is off

Is that 1/2 tank because the gas gauge said it was?...or 1/2 tank because you filled gas, drove across town & back, then refilled @ 11 gal. +or-.
I'm a little suspicious of your gas gauge.
Just a thought...

My gas gauge goes down 1/2 way after burning about 3 gallons.

I get 12-13 miles per gallon in the city with A/C on.

I have a 2" lift with 33" tires and get about 11mpg city, 15mpg hwy.

Transio,
Mine's kinda strange too...usually under all city conditions (I know, I'd have to drive 4 hrs. to get to an actual city) mine will go dwn. to the 3/4 mark at about 45-50 miles.

Julian, how on earth did you fit 33s with just a 2 inch lift? You must have done some serious fenderwell mods!

im with this man my gauge is stupid too...it drops a 1/4 tank in 2miles. i get around 17~ mpg combined on a stock 56k mile vx.

kinda the same.. i figure im getting around 200 miles a tank.. or mostly about 10 mpg... all city driving though so i am not sure if this is normal... even though it is seeming more and more like it is.

well I cleaned my fuel injectors last night and it helped a little but i took it in this mornin to the isuzu store and they looked at it for about an hour or so. It turns out that I wasnt really burning a half a tank, the gas gauge sensor was screwed up. Apparently it was sticking on something. So the guys at isuzu ordered me a new one.

I've been getting 13 to 14.4 mpg city, 17 to 19 mpg highway. Stock engine & exaust.

You will like to hear THIS. When I am towing the boat I am averaging 14-14.5 miles to a gal on a highway. :)
Now I use VX only to tow and maybe weekend stroll because of gas prices. The rumor is it is going up on Saturday again......

There's something wrong with that.

Obviously, a lot of factors come in to play with gas milage but I'm getting at least 300 miles per tank before the light comes on. When I fill up, I still have a little over two gallons left. Considering we have a 22.5 gallon tank, 300 miles for 20 gallons seems to be pretty good for the VX :)

I commute in rush hour traffic (25 miles in hour to hour and half) twice a day and I still get at least 300 miles to a tank. I usually fill up at around 310 miles and I've never had the fuel light come on. Generally takes just shy of 20 gals to fill. I've found that if I use super instead of regular it not only runs better, but I get a mile to mile and half more per gallon. Maybe Washington gas is better? :p

If that rate of usage was ever true, you would be smelling gas.
I have had two gas leaks from cracked hoses (Supply and return) under the EGR valve at 44k mi.I have also had the jumping gas meter condition so popular with the VX. There was a time in 2003-2004 when the oil refiners left alot of sulfur in the gas which formed H2SO4 and ate a little of the sender wires. This made the national news. I do not think anyone got a refund. This was said to be localized in the south, but mine failed at just that time. Since the oil companies are making so little now, we should not be suprised that they cheat a little in processing. Greed knows no bounds (If you have no recourse-of course.).

so something must be wrong then. any idea how i can fix this? or at least how i can help it out?

Are you lifted Mr Quakers? running larger tires? what mods have you done if any?

Mr.Quackers
09/25/2005, 03:37 PM
I got the vx not but maybe 3 months ago. so as far as mods i have not done any yet other than professionally installing the Pv muffler. i got it with P255/70 r16 yoko tires on 15" eagle alloy rims. (not really sure what that means but i got it off the tire) as far as a lift goes, neither previous owners have told me that they have lifted it so as far as i know, it is not lifted. (anyways of quickly checking?) the only other thing that i could possibly think of if it does have a roof rack on it. it has been taken care of very well and has not missed any scheduled maint. so.. maybe something might be wrong with the engine?

Are you dividing miles traveled (use trip odo.) by gallons reqd. to fill tank ?
Or are you trusting your gas gauge...I know these gauges man...they can't be trusted!!! ;wtf; :rolly: :noy:
Also, with larger tires, you won't register true mileage on the odo...larger than stock diameter = less revolutions per mile. Search "tire calc." for clarification.

that may be it. i might not be gettign a correct milage reading.

do i really have that much larger tires than stock?

i will try the "tire calc" search and see how incorrect a reading i am getting. (praying that is the problem)

I get about 290-300 miles before the fuel light comes on. Last mileage check was 16.1 in mostly city driving.

well my tires are like 1.6% off, (according to the tire calc) so i dont think that is the problem. (unless 1.6% really is a big diffrence) i feel like a "noob" when it comes to this stuff, but i just filled up today and i am getting around 12-13 mpg. after doing a little division of course. so unless i got the wrong size for the stock tire, is there any other thing that might be wrong? or is this mialage what we are supposed to be getting?
