I have built a sub enclosure for a jl audio 12w6 or 12w3 to replace the spare tire.may work for other subs that need a 1.25 cubic ft sealed enclosure. i will be putting it in today. i will post pics when i can. it is made out of 3/4" mdf . for those that may be intrested i will make them to order, but have not decided on a price yet. shawn

it's raining again so i will not be able to finish the install. i did take pics of what is done so far.the front will be different.it will look like the front of the box i built for james.also there is enough room on top to mount an amp which i will be doing when it stops raining.

the old style 12w6 fits no problem. i had to modify to make the 12w3 fit.

some of you may be wondering why i did not build it to cover the hole and then tell you it will look like the other if i build you one.it was easier to build that way and be able to modify it without the extra board in the way.as far as the price goes i will give you a few options $150 just mdf no carpet. $200 carpeted. also if you want the outside coated in fiberglass resin add $40. these prices are without shipping. you pay whatever shipping costs are.

What is that board mounted to and how? I am a little skeptical. My system pushes a LOT of power to the rear sub and even after insulating the tailgate with Dynamat and spray insulation, I feel I am walking a fine line between vibration noise and purity. It may be that I will have to try something out on my own before spending $200 on something that may not work for me. :(

C'mon spring.... hurry up. Daddy has a lot of work to do.

I'm liking it man. How deep is the enclosure going to be (sorry if someone asked this before). I have a nasty deep JL 12" that I believe is needs 9" of from-rim spacing. Even so, that box looks quite nice and I wouldnt mind "shimming the rim" some.

Nice.... "shimming the rim".... I can use that for other "conversations" as well. ;)

psychos2
02/02/2006, 09:44 AM
wormgod, the box is a total of 7" deep so it would be only 6 1/4" mounting depth. It will fit the old style 12w6, the new style 12w3v2 (with a little mod), 12w1v2, and a 12w6v2 (with some minor changes). and possibly 2 10" or 2 8" . and some other brands of subs with the same mounting depth and approx 1.25 cubic feet of volume. shawn

In order to get the ball rolling and get a few orders I am willing to offer this for $150 + shipping to the first 4 people to order. It will be the non carpeted price but will be carpeted. if you have a sub and want to know if it will fit let me know the brand and model. I do not have pics of the box carpeted yet because I am waiting on carpet.but you can see from the other pics of my past work that it will look good. shawn

How does it mount into the spare compartment? It doesnt just sit in there I hope, or is mounting for us to determine?

there are a couple ways that it can be done.one is with a bracket behind the top edge on both sides. the other is with the bolt holes from the spare tire bracket. i have not decided yet. when i install mine i will decide. i have carpet coming tue or wed so i will be able to post pics of it finished before the weekend. shawn

Thanks Tone. I have thought about that but I like the amp on top. I have a few ideas for running the wires. I am planning on making my own cover for the front and not using the stock cover. And where the amp is, just the front edge of the amp will be visible. I have also thought about flipping the amp upside down so the inside shows. What is your opinion on the price? What would your shop charge for a box like this? thanks shawn

I have often wondered why people run monster wires to far away places when you could just mount a dry cell Odessey battery near the amp/speaker and run a small chargeing wire.

Old school installation. I am the same way. I have enough wires in the back on my VX to make it look like a server closet.

i'm not a big audio nut, but this looks good/compact.
and 1 thing i have noticed in the vx is that a nice sound system definitely enhances, though not extremely important in my book.
however, if you still don't have any bites on the last two next month or so, i might be into trying one.

if i had to lug a spare though on a long drive, how difficult would it be to swap?
just simply unplug and take the box out right?

thanks,
cy

Hey Cyronman,

I just ordered my custom PsychoBox (TM) from Shawn, knowing that I'll lose the spare tire storage. The thing is, for long road trips I'll STILL want good audio more than the safety of a spare! I told Shawn I'd either invest in a solid AAA membership in case of a flat, or else throw a Yakima Load Warrior on top and carry a full-size spare!

I'll add this: In my last VX (the late, lamented Ironman...RIP!), all I did was add a 6" sub (yes, a tiny sub) into a custom-fabbed enclosure for the jack cubby! Even the 6" sub, separately amped from the stock head unit, improved the sound about a million percent.

This time, adding a 10" sub in a MUCH better enclosure, and then upgrading to an Eclipse head unit...well, I'll probably never leave the VX. Except to pee.

Maybe not even then.

Yes, you can just remove it. But you would have to install the mount for the spare ,it has to be removed for this box to fit. If you are concerned about the spare I make a fiberglass box that fits in the spare tire.It will fit a jlaudio 8w3v2 sub. The cost is $325 plus shipping. Not as loud but adds some bass. If you order a fiberglass box before xmas I will include free shipping. shawn

I recieved Shawn's box and I must say, the quality and craftsmanship far outweighs even that of namebrand boxes I have bought in the past. Shawn has da'skillz!! Superb work!

It is tricky getting the box tucked into the tailgate and i have yet to get it all the way in (only spent about 5 minutes trying before I had to get on with some errands). I hope to get back to it later this evening.

Shawn, I bluffed on the sub that I have. It's actually a JL Audio 12W6. A bit bigger than what I think I told you. But, it fit like a !@#$ing glove! Dropped right into place and screwed right in. I put some polyfill in there and tested it out. It sounds great. Excellent thump, no box rattle, and with the tailgate thoroughly insulated already, the body has no rattle either. Too awesome! EVERYONE needs this box!

Now to properly seat the box in the tailgate so I can get cracking on the rear cover speaker port.

Score: 10/10

Wow, I am extremely impressed at the quality of this box! I ordered the sealed 12" version and it sits SOLID in the rear door. Slammed the door very hard ten times or so and didn't even budge it. I thought I would need to throw some caulk or liquid gasket in there to hold it in place, but I would be lucky to get the darn thing back out as it is!

If any of you are considering putting a little kick in your ride, this is the place to go for a great buy! Very well made, very reasonably priced, and best of all made by someone in the VX community who knows what they are doing! Thanks Shawn, my vx sounds great thanks to you!

Its just sitting in the tailgate, not covered, since I still have yet to butcher the cover *cringe*, but the sound is unbelievable. The box replaces the spare tire and will fit 2 10" subs or one 12' sub.the price is $150 not carpeted or $200 carpeted plus shipping which is around $40. shawn http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/thumbs/P10100031.JPG (http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=7063)http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/thumbs/P10100061.JPG (http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=7034)http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/thumbs/P10100053.JPG (http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=7033)http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/data/500/thumbs/P10100013.JPG (http://www.vehicross.info/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=7032)

"BIG" sound was never my thing, but I do REALLY need those big orange "screws" that you no longer have the need of. I'll buy them for what I got for my "bumber garnish" I just sold to Navistar, how about $25.00 plus S&H. I need two, but I'd like all four if you would?

DW, you can get metal replacements from member SBC! No more breakage problems!

still building these? Think it can handle 2400 watts? (not that I ever really pound it THAT hard, but you know sometimes the kids in the civics need a lesson)

Teach them a lesson or sound just as bad and annoying as them? ;)

I am NOT too sure this box will suffice that much punch. I am pushing a JLAudio 200w through my 12" JLAudio sub in this box and the port already pumps out a crap-ton of air. Excellent quality box but best used for precision tuning, not trunk thumping. :)

Shawn,

With the carpeted box, does it replace the OEM spare cover or does the cover go back over your box?

Only a few subs I know of that can handle that much power and they are WAY to deep to fit in a VX's rear door.:yesy:

Shawn,

Can you build the box to mount a subwoofer I already have? It's a 10 inch Illusion sub.

I have forgotten the specs on it, I am not sure if 1.25 cu/ft is enough. I had a sponsorship with PYLE, (I know), and they installed there best comp stuff. That was a few years ago and now I am stripping it out. I have NEVER even gotten close to full power, maybe 1/2 of what it is capable only a couple of times. At 1/2 capability it was impossible to breath and it gave you a case of vertigo.

EDIT:

NM I need 3.678 cu/ft :(

Shawn,

I'm trying to find it. It's in my basement somewhere...you should see my basement! I'd like to be the forth person but since this would be sort of a custom hole you may not be able to discount it for me.

FYI, The spare cover will fit over the installed box as well. You need to trim the ribs on the backside of the cover and of course, cut a hole for your sub (makes a WONDERFUL vibrating/rattling cover if you don't. STill very happy after a couple years with it. Great work by Shawn.

Hey psychos2, would a Pioneer Shallow TS-SW3041D 12" (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/CarAudioVideo/Subwoofers/Shallow/TS-SW3041D?tab=B) be able to be flush mounted to the box? I do not know how deep your box is.

Also would you be able to make it? I always wanted to buy one, but kept forgetting about it and I would really like what little cargo space back!

The max mounting depth is 6.25" . and you are talking about having it so the speaker is recessed so it is flush with the front ? shawn

Should be easy enough to take a router to the mount bevel once you get it if you want it recessed. I would wait and see the final product before doing so. Take measurements of your lip depth before making the slice.

That is correct. The mounting depth of my sub is only 3.25". I have no means to do it myself. I have all the measurements if it would help any.

I may be able to do it after the holidays. I have less free time so it may be more like $250 plus shipping. shawn

Anyone in contact with psychos2. I'm interested in a sub box and have sent email and PM but no response.
