Colorado ZuZoo 2006 Convoy!

Calling all VX’ers – You going to Moab this year? Will your travels take you through Colorado on I-70? If so, let’s gather and caravan to Moab – after all, nothing beats seeing a string of VX’s in front and behind you!

MSHardeman and I have been in contact with each other for a while now regarding the idea of a caravan. After some thought we agreed the best place to meet up would probably be Glenwood Springs along I-70. The plan is to do lunch before heading out for Moab!

The proposed logistics:

Date: 05.15.06
Time: 11:00am
Where: “Hot Springs Lodge & Pool” parking lot : Glenwood Springs, CO.
Directions: I-70 West to Exit 116.
CB Channel: 17
Walkie-Talkie: Channel 9, Code 0

Obvious participants would be Colorado VX’ers going to ZuZoo. However, any out of state people interested? Everybody’s invited!!!

Way to go Biju. You know I'll be there.

The invitation is open to anyone, but if some of you Colorado VXers just want to do lunch in Glenwood it would be great to have you there.

Bimati - You're more than welcome to come, but I know that it's back tracking for you. If not, we'll call you as we reach Grand Junction, and figure out where to meet up.

Should be a lot of fun. Can't wait to meet everyone.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEE HAWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if I will be in Glenwood or Grand Junction, but I am definitely along for the ride!

I look forward to meeting you fellow VXer's.

Any travelling tips for a newbie besides a bottle of Back to Black?

Bimati: I'll try to scrounge up the list of things I took for last years trip. Once I find it I'll PM you the list. (anybody else interested?)

Locomigo: Drop me a PM when you go locally. I'll take you up on that offer sometime!

I see we have two more joining: pbkid and raver_boi_88. Welcome. In addition, it's confirmed my roommate is going to roll with. He'll be driving my other VX so that makes 6 in total. Excellent...

I can't wait to see six VX's rolling down the road. Should we get a police escort when we get to Moab? It'll be like a parade down Main Street.

I think our police escort (Moncha) can't make it. :(

I'll send you the list too... np.

There is no problem with your friend in the tacoma wheeling with the groups in Moab. Last year there were jeeps, chevies, dodges and a rover that joined us.

Most of this stuff came with me last year after doing a search on this site. Quite a few threads offered suggestions on stuff to bring.

Here's what I plan to bring this year (my checklist if you will):

Garmin Rino GPS (& batteries)
CB Handheld (w/ car plug & batteries)
Wrench Set
Screw Driver
Pliers
Tent
Sleeping Bag
Water Canteens
Camelback
Flashlight (& batteries)
Duct Tape
Camp Chairs
Blanket
Cooler
1qt Royal Purple 10w30
Digital Cam & Charger
Firewire Flashdrive Reader
Blank CD’s
Powerbook
Visine! (Thanks, Moncha)
Sunglasses
Bungee Cord
Rain Jacket
Cell Phone (& charger)
Camp Medical Kit
Camp Knife
Extra Rags
Alan Wrenches
Sunscreen
Hat
Extra Audio Fuses
Spare Tire
Mallet (Not to be confused with "Mullet". LOL.)
Tire Gauge
Tire Deflators
Spare Skid Plate Bolts
Nylon Tow Strap
Pups
Pup Toys & Food

It looks like a lot of stuff, but if you think about it - it's really just basic items you'd want anyways (some for on the trail, some for off the trail). Don't have all this crap? I was told last year not to worry. Just bring a CB, tow strap, spare & some food/water and you're ready to roll... But then again, that's just passing on the same advice I was given. :p

I will try and join up when the caravan hits Grand Junction...not sure if I can get the time off yet. How long does the trip last in terms of staying in the Moab area? Do you all plan on doing the 2 day trail?

Bimati - (Jeff) Got the info you dropped off. Great to hear from a fellow VX owner. I think there are only 3 of us in the Grand Valley.

I concur with Triathlete. Your friends are welcome. (although, they might have to drive in the back of the caravan! :p Just kidding...)

Rick - If you're able to go just iron out a place and time you want us to meet you and Bimati in Grand Junction. If you join us for the caravan then the event will run from the 15th - 20th.

Not sure what you mean by the 2day trail. It might exist as a part of the event, but I haven't heard of it.

Hope to see you there...

Bimati,

I also had another Colorado VX'er (who just purchased a Proton) contact me - and is still trying to decide if he's going to join.

So far I see 5 (+ my proton, making 6). Seeing as the time is getting close - anybody else going to be through that area during our meet and would like to join?

Which route are you guys taking into Utah? We will be coming up the 163 to the 191 out of Arizona.

Never mind, just looked at my map. The 70 takes you in from the north side.

Just an FYI...

There is construction on 191 south from I70 when you exit @ Crescent junction.

My recommendation is to take 128 down that parallels the river @ Cisco exit ~20 mi over the border (BR-6 takes you righ parallel to 70 to the south a couple miles then 128 to the left and follows the river all the way to town). Slightly longer, but WELL worth the miles for the scenery baby!!! Especially if you are going to be driving during daylight hours.

Jay, Lisa and I were planning on swinging up to Pueblo to see Scott (for a coffee) and would love to bring up the rear of your convoy. Not sure how far that is from Pueblo but we'll map it. We are leaving from Houston (we'll be down there for the Grand Prix) and driving straight through so we should be there Monday morning.

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!! Hope you can join us.

Update on Grand Junction: The convoy is scheduled to meet at the Shell station on Horizon drive sometime around 2PM on the 15th.

Horizon Drive is the main GJ exit with all of the hotels and the airport. When you exit the interstate, you will be staring at a yellow Shell station right in front of you.

Can't Wait....I'm staying at the Sleep Inn with the other VXers.

Yup, we're all traveling in the ML as Lisa's is getting older and I'm serious about my offroading - Lion's Back is definitely on our schedule. I did the Hummer test track a few weeks ago and I am confident in the ML's abilities. Scott has a busy schedule so we may not even see him but it's only a hundred miles out of our way and a VX caravan is a sight to see, so count us in.

Tone: Can you stick the front turn signal lens in your luggage for the trip? I bought the other two (awesome) and I figure a spare would be nice...

MSHardeman: I sent a PM to RickfrmCO and haven't heard back. I figure he will at least meet the caravan in GJ to say "Hi" and snap some photos of Le Vix Train. Rick has an ironman with custom wheels, so it would definitely add to the texture and aesthetic appeal of the group.

Okay I will not be able to join y'all on the 14th because I'll be coming into Utah from the Nevada side then. BUT I will be driving through Glenwood Springs in a VX (not mine, just bought a Proton for the hunny and am going to be trekking it back to California) on the 3rd/4th of May, (Lord willin' and the crick don't rise).

I'd like to try out this Bayou which has been mentioned. Anybody willing to give an out of towner just passing through directions on how to get to the Bayou? I'll be staying at the Rodeway Inn in Glenwood Springs. Probably getting in late on the 3rd. I will probably check out the Bayou on the 4th before getting on the road.

Gonna try...we're shooting for Grand Island NE the night of the 13th.
Then get somewhere close the night of the 14th & roll in for lunch with y'all @ 11:00 on the 15th.
This plan should work discounting any unscheduled "pit stops"...I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
If you look to the east & see a man with a "hungry for soup" look in his eye...that be me.

Piece of cake...
google map (http://maps.google.com/maps?oi=map&q=919+Grand+Avenue,+Glenwood+Springs,+CO+81601)

Basically reverse these directions (taken from the hotel website):
I-70 West exit 116, first light take a left on the frontage road (Highway 6) go 1 mile hotel on the right. I-70 East exit 114, stay to the left go under highway, right on frontage road (Highway 6) 1 mile east on the left.

This is to the south of the river/I70 on Grand at that same exit.

Wyld,
I was in Glenwood this past weekend, and the Bayou had a sign out front that said they didn't open until 4pm. I'm going to call them today to see if it was just a weekend thing, or if that's normal. I'll let you know what's going on when I find out.
If they are open, when are you thinking of going? If you would like the company I can make the trip down to Glenwood (I work in Basalt - about 30 min away, and live in Carbondale - about 15 min away) to chow down with you.

Wyld and the Colorado Zuvoy,

I just called the Bayou and they are only open from 4pm to 10pm daily (4pm to 12am Friday/Saturday). That kind of blows lunch for the Zuvoy and I wasn't sure when you where thinking of going Wyld, but it may be too late for you too.

Any one got any other ideas for the Zuvoy? Bimati, are there some good local restaurants in GJ that we could decend upon? The Denver contingent could still meet me at the Hot Springs in Glenwood for some pics and meet and greet, then we could head on to GJ for lunch (about an hours drive). If lunch in Glenwood is still the plan I can hunt down a couple of other places to eat.

Let me know.

Locomigo

Two words:

Dos Hombres.

Glenwood West exit, then backtrack on the frontage road 1/2 - 3/4 mile.

Although, I thought I had read that the meeting location/lunch would be in GJ. Not that it matters much to me as I will already be in Moab >;- )~, just trying to help out...

WyldWeasel
05/02/2006, 06:47 PM
Gosh, thanks for the heads up, everybody. You rawk!

Maybe if we make Glenwood Springs before 10 pm on the 3rd we'll have a go at the Bayou. If not, we'll check out Dos Hombres on the way out. As far as knowing when or where we'll be we're going to be doing 760 miles tomorrow (mostly straight thru Kansas, but I imagine things might slow a bit once we hit Denver). And since the Proton I just bought has a tranny pan and oil pan leak, and some other things the Isuzu dealer here needs to look over before we can get on the road for a 1400+ mile trip, there's no ETA on when we're heading out.

But, that being said, they definitely know what a VX is. I had just pulled into the Isuzu dealer's lot when a salesman came over and asked "You want to sell that? You want to trade it in? Those things are rare, especially that color." He was very disappointed when I said I had just bought it and was driving it to California.

I agree with "Dos Hombres" in Glenwood Springs for your lunch if it works for the group. It's good food, and plenty of space to stretch out inside or outside (although parking is tight).

If y'all decide to eat in Grand Junction, there are many restaurants available close to the meeting place, but we should all still plan on meeting at the Shell station on Horizon Drive.

Let me know what you guys think. I am flexible for anything.

Hey there, Locomigo!
Hunny here with an update on WyldWeasel's whereabouts. Currently deep in west Kansas on I70, hoping for Denver around midnight, mountain time. Got a late start out of the dealer in KC Mo. Breakfast tomorrow, perhaps? On the cell at (805) 217 4695, call anytime. Looks like the Weasel will be up late.

Update from the Weasel and apologies for this thread hijack but Locomigo's PM quota is full  :

Called, but got no reply. Leaving Denver hotel (near airport) around 10 am, will stop in Glenwood Springs (cause I wanna see the caves). Will try you again when I reach Glenwood Springs, maybe we can still hook up.

Just a heads up for those of you who plan on going to Dos Hombres: Passed thru Glenwood Springs yesterday. There is road work on 6th street just off the freeway that might make things confusing for those who are unfamiliar with the area. It's certainly navigable, just a bit distracting.

On a related note, there is road construction through parts of Glenwood Canyon heading west all the way to No Name rest area.

The road construction mentioned earlier in this thread on the Westbound I-70 leading into the 191 turn off to Moab does indeed narrow the road down to 1 lane, and that surface was so bad that it's easier to drive half on the shoulder.

Had scattered thunderstorms last night all thru Utah. But the ambient air temp was very tolerable. It's really nice outside here in Vegas today. Sunny but not scorching. If the weather's like it was yesterday, it should be be very nice for Moab. But then we're talking another 10 days, and anything can happen before then. :)
