Our tranny on our 2000 Ironman is "clinking" loudly and the whole truck vibrates on slow takeoff. Between 5-10 mph, the vibration and clinking is terrible, then stops. I am looking for a dealer or repair shop in DFW area that KNOWS what they're doing, as well as offers a loaner vehicle while mine is being repaired. This is my only vehicle, so I won't have transportation while its in the shop.

If you have any idea of what it sounds like it might be, please share. I would love to know a ballpark figure of just how much this may cost. It's my first major problem in 108,000 miles. I was thinking of selling her too, but no way now. :(

Have you ever did exchange of tranny fluid ? not just drain and fill but full exchange. What is your driving habbit - do you shift "manually" while driving ?

That noise might not even be the transmission. Perhaps you could look for a reputable four wheel drive shop rather than a transmission specialist.

Althought I've never used one myself, I've only ever heard bad things about transmission shops in general. It could be a bad rap. I tend to believe that any business that specialized is up to something. Sure transmissions fail, but any competent mechanic can replace a transmission. Heck, if you're careful, a reasonably inclined mortal can rebuild them. I had pretty good luck rebuilding a 700r4 a couple years ago and that's the first one I tore into - drove it like a madman and even pulled stumps with the truck and it's still the strongest feeling unit I've driven. The main trick is having good snap ring tools and a clean operating area.

Oh yeah, and always put red loctite on transmission front seals ;) Nothing like having your truck bleed all over the highway 50 miles from home. (early 700r4's had a too-small fluid return hole at the front seal)
