Engine Oil Use

I bought a 99 VX with about 8000miles...ever since then I have observed a small but noticeable oil usage which needs periodic topping off...the car gets 500miles use per week...

Is this typical oil consumption for this motor, or do I need to look for a cause......

normal up to 1 qt in 5K miles

While we are on the subject.

Should one top off periodically in between oil changes? Or just wait til the 3-5 k (what ever your preference) for the next one?
