I want a Roof Rack to replace my funky and useless stock one that you cannot connect anything to... anybody have advice on the what and where to get one? Or how to make mine functional? I want one that basically just has the bars to attach ropes and light cargo to... no bike or ski rack.

Sorry to say disasterlady, but you & about 10-20 others here are lusting after the same "holy grail".
Unfortunately the crossbars are no longer available from anyone/ anywhere.
There have been a few who have made "noises" about making custom cross bars & Zeuss (sp?) has the best solution for those without crossbars.
Do a search on roofracks or look in Zeuss's gallery for more.

If you find something to replace your stock rack there are plenty of people on this sit that will take out a 2nd morgage on their house to buy the stock rack. Luckly I'm not one of them...I have a stock rack. :bwgy:

1st dibs on your stock rack!!!
In my translation of what's been so far said...she has no cross-bars & is referring to the side rails as the roof rack...but my de-coder ring just got back from the jeweler (needed cleaning) & he's got a wicked cruel sense of humor.
Check me if I'm wrong here disasterlady. :p

I have been using Yakima 1A Rain Gutter towers with round bars with no problems. They do sit about 3 inches higher than stock but it allows me to use the rack for bikes, basket, kayack. You can get them on ebay for about $20 - $40 bucks for a complete used kit. I rather have a rack 3 inches higher than stock and save me $400 - $500 for an OEM one.

Can't help with the rack but the hitch that Tone offers is very stout with no off- road clearance problems.

So if I have absolutely nothing I could buy these and be on my way to the round bars and just have an aftermarket set up
