Question Fat tires or skinny tires?

I am getting ready to replace my tires on my 2K VX and was thinking of going with the 285/60-18 Nittos that some people have tried. I was just wondering what drawbacks a wider tire would have vs. a narrower tire - say a 265/75-16. Both are about the same height so the width would be the real issue.

Since I use my truck a lot to go to the snow, would the narrow tire be better? It seems that snow tires are always narrow. Pros and cons of each? I know that I would also have to factor in the cost of new rims if I go to 16's.

    Thanks in advance.

if you go to the nitto web sight and look at the width of both sizes. you will find that the 18's are 10.67 inches wide and the 16's are 10.75 inches wide. here is a link: http://www.nittotire.com/mainframe.asp

How can that be? The first measurement of a tire size is the width of the tread in MM. How is it possible that the 265 is wider?

It must be a typo. The Toyo site shows a 285 is 11.6 inches wide. Either that or it is some kind of "new math".

Yes, a narrower tire would be better for snow, but I'm not sure how much better it would be. Just for the record, the 285/60-18 Nitto Terra Grappler fits under the VX quite nicely. I havne't noticed any problems with the extra tire size under there either. They are a little noisier than my Poxes were, but no enough to bother me. Over all, I think they are great... not to mention, they LOOK great too! You can see my tires here. Hopefully sometime soon, I'll get off my *** and do my website. I have been kicking around some new ideas... now I gotta make them work.
