    Belt tensioner

    How much effort (relatively) should it take to move the serpentine belt tensioner to remove the belt? Am I correct in assuming that a ratchet on the tensioner pulley nut clockwise should rotate the tensioner to release tension? I am afraid that my tensioner is frozen or else I'm not using enough effort. If frozen, how is the tensioner removed for replacement, i.e., how is the tensioner attached to the block, I don't see a bolt.

    I usually use a breaker bar or a cheater bar to move tensioners back. Those springs are pretty tough. If it's frozen, you should be able to get it off by removing the torx bolt in the center then wiggle it out by lightly prying or tapping on the pulley end with a hammer. Cutting the belt might help. You should replace it anyways if you're replacing the tensioner, since it might be overextended already.

    One tip: buy the best quality torx sockets you can afford. Cheapies will cause them to strip out at which point you are screwed.

    Another: if you have room, put the torx socket in then tap it with a hammer a few times. It both helps seat the socket better and release some of the binding force on the threads.

    Edit: actually now that I think about it, I think the tensioner is held on by a metric allen bolt. Same rules apply though. But, make sure you don't try a non-metric allen head - it will strip.

    Breaker on the nut on the pulley. (I found an exploded view of the tensioner assy that shows it's mounted to the block by a bolt on the left side so removal is feasible.) I just don't want to break it if it isn't frozen and am concerned how much effort it should take to move it.

    It should move fairly easily with a breaker bar. I mainly use one so I can hold it back with one hand while I put the belt on so I don't lose a finger.
