    coleman safari roof basket

here is a good alternative to a yakima loadwarrior.. the coleman safari basket, its the same dimensions as the loadwarrior (without extensions, and extensions for this basket arent available as far as i know) but it feels very sturdy, its rated at 110 lbs.. but i was standing in it with no problem (im only 135 though lol) comes with a fairing and bolts right up to your factory crossbars, or lowrider crossbars, its all very easy to take on and off.. but i changed that by using 1/4 fine thread bolts to hold it on instead of the hand removed pieces it came with.. i got mine on ebay for 130 shipped.. as it turns out costco also offers it for 130 shipped

    heres some pics

Cool, so you don't need any mounts or anything to hold it on? Everything is included?

This is a lot cheaper than the Load Warrior!

yep, all included, there are 4 mounts that clip to the underside of the basket that rest on your crossbars, then a metal U shaped piece that comes up under your crossbars through the mount under the basket, then it all bolts together from on top.. surprisingly the mounts can be attached the right width apart for the VX crossbars (the install instructions said you will have to adjust your crossbars to be the right distance apart and my heart fell.. then i checked it and it was a perfect fit) ill post some closeups of that when i get home

Just double checking.. I'm a little slow today (I blame it on the allergy meds)... So, you do or don't need to have a stock roof rack to mount this?

silverbullet - i have mine mounted to a non stock rack.. i was thinking about it earlier and thinking.. im pretty sure i could mount it directly to the rails that are on all VXs even without the roof rack.. but not sure yet, im going to try this weekend cause that would be cool

crncnn - i dont think coleman makes any acessories for it.. when i get a full sized spare i planned on taking a square plate with a threaded rod welded onto it, pushed the rod up through the bottom of the rack and through the center of the tire, then taking the plate that holds the stock spare in and putting that over the threaded rod, drilling a hole through the rod and putting a key lock in the hole so prevent the nuts from being taken off... ive also designed a light rack for it already that ill be building when i get my lights and also plan on getting a yakima mount for a shovel/axe and seeing how well that fits on there

nfp - sorry i didnt get the pics of the mounts yet.. it was a long night.. hopefully tomorrow

    mounts

got photos of the mounts taken today before the rain came.. it actually came with easy to use knobs where i have the hex nuts, i just replaced them because a. the knobs stuck up kinda far and b. the hex nuts require much more effort to remove... once im sure of the position and configuration ill be cutting the ends of the metal U piece that goes under the crossbar so it doesnt stick up where my cargo will need to sit

Hey, I just wanted to throw another reply on this thread. I bought the Coleman rack from Costco, very good price for a nice sturdy rack ($128 shipped iirc). But, with the stock Yakima wing bars, the rack did not line up right. Basically, if I centered the front mounts on the front bar, the rear mounts were off by 3/4". There is no way to correct this by moving the mounts to another spot on the rack either.

Since the rack came in two halves that you connect and screw together, I was able to trim the tubes down by 3/4" with a cheapo tube cutter from Home Depot. But, in doing this, I lost the screw holes that hold it together and had to drill new ones, that I put bolts through to hold things together. It took a moderate amount of work to accomplish, but in the end it works perfectly and looks good.

I just wanted to make everyone aware of this in case anyone was thinking of buying one of these.

    Bart

PS - Pictures of this rack installed are on my website.

sorry it turned into such a project for you bart, the rack lined up nicely on my roof rack, but i dont have the stock one, so its possible my mounts are slightly off of where the stock one was, or maybe since my crossbars are smaller than the stock ones the 3/4 inch didnt make much difference.. glad you got it on there though

No need to apologize! Its a great rack for the price, and now that I have it shortened a little, it fits perfectly! I just wanted to post about it since not everyone is keen on modding stuff like I am.

It fits my spare well and I think I will have enough room for 10 gallons of extra liquid money. I plan on getting everything ready for Moab this weekend so I will post pics of my complete Moab VX rig when done!

    Thanks!
