    hood scoops...

what hood scoop setup would be best for lowering underhood temps (esp at idle)?

i was thinking cowl induction scoops facing the windshield were good for removing hot air.. but then thinking about it.. wouldnt a forward facing scoop remove air just as well (ie both of them will just have a hole in the hood underneath and all the scoop does is cover the hole) plus the forward facing hood has the added benefit of drawing cool air in while driving...

    comments?

    Funny you should ask...
See my "got a few things done" thread for particulars, but at idle, I can feel a steady stream of hot air coming from my recently completed (rear facing) hood scoop project. And that's with a "diverter plate" in place under the actual hole to channel rain away from the top of the engine.

Also, I've read in posts from the long ago, about people having frost melt off their windshield during winter months using similar mods.

yea ldub thats what got me thinking about it.. i was thinking that you would probably get the same stream of heat out of the scoop if it was facing forward though, especially sitting still

i didnt think about the window defrosting aspect of the rear facing scoop though.. very cool

anyone with a front facing scoop chime in here? did it lower your underhood temps/can you feel heat coming out while sitting?

A rear facing scoop will blow hot engine air into toward you interior-air intake at the base of the windshield, making it hot and stinky inside. On the other hand, it will suck hot air out of the engine bay while running, drawing more air through the grill.

A forward-facing scoop will force cooler air into the engine bay while running.

Neither would do much at idle, I think.

I'm considering a small one on the front left corner of the hood to feed the air filter (if I go cone). I have to get the hood repainted, so why not do it then?

HA...speak for your own bad smelling engine... mine has the smell of rose petals with just a hint of lilac & magnolia blossoms at idle.

OK, seriously...I've noticed no difference in cabin smellocity since doing this, but, by comparison, I am a few years older than most around here & have been a smoker most of my life...so it stands to reason that I may not notice as much.

BUT...on the other side of the coin, I'll be all over any fuel leak that may occur !

I'm thinking about going down this route with that C/F hood I picked up last December. The scoop is a perfect location to do open air filter with a heat shield mod. plus the exhaust vents in the center...I just need to figure out how to keep the rain out... not that it rains in Vegas!!! (actually rained the past week)...

With the VX an off center scoop looks nice in my opinion...

I like mine quite well though it serves no purpose but cosmetic at the moment, i have planned on cutting a hole under it to make it do what it looks like its doing lol that sounds funny
