Need a little bit of help....

99 Cross, 37k mileage here. Regular synthetic oil changes, tune ups, etc. etc.

I went in for my oil change today and I asked the guy to look at the CV boots while he was down there. I have been hearing a lot of clicking, mostly when I turn. Randomly before I would hear a "pop" sound, but I think it was just the springs relieving tension--at least I read that somewhere.

So he tells me that I am leaking fluid from two gaskets underneath, I believe he says oil gasket and transmission gasket. He tells me theres a steady drop but he can't tell which one is in the worst shape.

I call the Isuzu dealer and I get quoted 600 + dollars to replace two gaskets. Now, i never realized I was even leaking fluids, should I be worried? The oil is no problem, I can keep an eye on that. But what abuot the transfer case or transmission fluids?

Any ideas on steps I should take would be greatly appreciated.

And no, I haven't noticed my car overheating or anything like that.

First...figure out if it is leaking. If it was leaking, wouldn't it show up on your garage floor or driveway? Crawl under & look for yourself to see if & where there is oil leaking.

Second...get a second opinion.

I see a little, LITTLE spot -- Which I assume is semi-normal for a 9 year old car. Nothing to make me panic, or to show a "steady drip" as he posed it. I'm mostly worried about the clicking/popping when I turn. How do I check the fluid in my transfer case?

Transfer case is easy, crawl under & find the big aluminium thing (T-case housing) that the front drive shaft is bolted to...on the back side (toward the rear tires) are two plugs, one high & one low. (almost to the bottom)
Remove the upper plug with a 3/8" ratchet & some oil should come out, if not, stick your little finger in there to see if you can touch the oil just below the hole.
If you have oil on your finger, you're pretty close to full, but it wouldn't hurt to top it off. (Dextron II ATF, IIRC)

Checking the trans. is a little more involved, but goes a little something like this...



Before you do any of the above, park on level ground.

If you still get the clicking sound during turns after you top off fluids, start looking around for an axle shop that can rebuild the outer CV Joints. Don't wait too long or they could get worn to the point that they can not be rebuilt.
