    Chirping around the corners

Should the outside tires chirp when turning really tightly at low speeds?

I feel like I'm asking a stupid question -- I mean, I know what a differential is for. But it just seems like the VX has been chirpier in the last week or two. Today while easing into a parking place, I left a perfect arc of rubber in front of the parking place.

Is there some failure mode where an LSD becomes a REALLY L SD? Or is this normal for the VX, and I've just not noticed it before?

I don't think that leaving an arc of rubber behind is 'normal'. Mine doesn't.

Could you tell if it was the front or rear wheel that left the track?

Try finding an open area (BIG open area). Put the VX in reverse and stomp hard on the accelerator a few times. I'm not sure if it'll help but it worked with an old Samurai I used to have when the TX would bind. It certainly won't hurt to try it.

    Keep us posted.

    Arrow

You could try changing the rear diff. lube...add fresh LSD additive.
If your rear diff. has a lot of miles on it since the last lube change, it's possible that the LSD additive that keeps the clutches from grabbing has broken down.

You didn't accidentally leave it in 4LO when this happened did you?

Mine "crabs" around corners too. It was way worse when I was rolling with street tires, but now with my A/Ts its minimal...

I need to get my tires rotated.

Now see, if you had picked a rim/tire combo that stuck out 6" from the fenders (like mine), the crabbing wouldn't be a problem.

At low speeds the front tires don't have any power going to them (TOD doesn't kick in until you gain speed) - thus when you make sharp turns they aren't powered which causes the CV joints to click or pop. This is normal. If you had your VX in 4WLo you wouldn't heard the sound cause the VX would have 50/50 power to front and back.

Right, if he was in 4LO, he wouldn't get clicks or pops. He would get chirping and leave rubber behind (at least until the TX exploded).

Sorry John. That sounded kind of 'smart ***'. I didn't mean it that way. Constipation of the brain & diahrea (sp?) of the mouth.

I don't know if mdwyer was in 4LO - he didn't respond. It was just one of the scenarios that came to mind. If he was then listen to some sage advice: NEVER, ever, never, never, never, ever, ever, never, ever drive in 4LO on dry pavement. You may get away with it once or twenty times but eventually things that should stay in place ... won't. Of course driving in a straight line is OK but as soon as you start making turns then the front end is taking a different track than the rear & that is when bad things can happen.

I was not in 4LO. I've only used 4LO while on dirt roads. (PS: WHEEEEEEEE!!!!)

I didn't notice what was going on with the TOD indicator at the time. I'm also not sure if it was the front or back. I *think* it was the back. I'll do some really slow donuts in the parking lot and get back to you.

It is due for its next regular maint cycle. I don't have the full history of #0690. The dealer said it had maintenance done recently, but they didn't detail that to me... and I don't have a WHOLE lot of faith in the dealer. I'll get the diff looked at, though.

I've never experienced anything like this in my Subaru, which also has an LSD. I have seen it in other 4WD trucks, though... so that's why I'm not sure if it is a bad thing or not.
