What is the grey item sticking out fo the hood on the US drivers side of these VX's? Is it an intake?

That is a parking mirror, allowing the driver to see how close he is to the curb...at least, that's what I've heard.

The one in the last pic (posted by froggg) has been removed & had the mounting holes plugged.
