Question Current Preference on 16" Tire Replacements

My tires have had their life plus they are winter tires as my VX came from New York. I do not plan any lifting (yet), will be a daily driver, and was curious what the 16" tire crowd is replacing/or have replaced their tires with the current tires available? I want to stay stock at this time with the 245/70 16 but will go up if they do not rub & no cladding mods. I was looking at BFG AT KO and Yokohama Geolander AT's.

I'm now on my eighth set of tires which were installed today. All were stock size 16".

3/25/00- I started with the stock 'Stones, of course. Hated 'em. Black wall and terrible in the snow. Junked 'em way early.
4/10/01- 14,265- Michelin Cross Terrain SUV. Poor mileage for $150 each.
10/08/02- 41,908- BF Goodrich Open Trail T/A. Cheap tire with poor mileage.
10/07/03- 62,956- Dunlop Rover A/T. Decent mileage for an A/T.
10/08/04- 89,550- Toyo Open Country A/T. Decent mileage for an A/T.
1/31/06- 117,756- Mastercraft Courser A/T. Cheap tire with decent mileage for an A/T.
4/24/07- 145,551- Cooper Discoverer H/T. Very quiet and smooth riding with good mileage.
8/13/08- 176,110- Cooper Discoverer H/T. My first repeat tire 'cuz they're soooo quiet and smooth.

You can't always be smooth, but your tires should be.

BTW, the wear on all these tires has been incredibly even. No unusual wear marks at all. I've had seven front end alignments and do a fair amount of rotating.

    BOOOOOOOOO

275/70/16 (31.2 x 10.8) should be fine no lift needed:

Just a little trim with some tin snips around the underside plastic if anything at all..... It is worth it!

Yes, I've always used that exact size so that my speedo and odo are correct.

I forgot to mention that with the Cooper tires I broke 20 mpg for the first time ever this summer. I normally got 18.5-19.5 mpg. They roll real nice.

I've got a set of Ultra Quiet, great handling Yokohama Geolanders in a factory fitting dimension, all mounted up to a nice set of Factory 18" wheels

    You could always buy those

Yep... and these are new tires 1 pair has about 2,000, the other pair about 10-15K... (I'll have to look at the paperwork to verify) And they were $500 /pair of tires. And they're mounted and balanced

IMO, going up to 265/70 R 16" looks a lot better...
You don't need any lift & the pic shows how slight the cladding trim is.
While it's true that your speedo will be off by a few MPH, on the plus side, your odo is recording fewer miles...

I want to thank whoever took that pic, I horked it out of someone elses gallery & have used it many times to illustrate how minor trimming can yield great results in the form of a more agressive looking VX...

Also, the most popular, quiet & all around great performing tire around here is the Nitto Terra Grappler...

    Yokohama Geolander AT's

I have these and they suck!!!!!
loud, very soft side wall so at 40 psi the truck still feels like its going to fall over or pull a bead off the rim.

In light of what Rene M just said...load range C at least, D might be a little on the stiff side...

I hear ya...never had any Yokos, but was thinking that if anybody popped for the Nittos, they might not like them if they bought anything under load range "C".
Not for SURE that they would even be available in anything under "C" at that size.
I'm tryin' to cover my ash here...can you tell?
