    Tweeter resistance / Infinity 6022SI

Well, the kids and their whacked out Crazy Frog CD have taken a toll on the wimpy factory speakers and it's time for something a little more robust. I had settled on Infinity 6022SI's since there are several recommendations from forum members and even some pics of the mods required to mount the rear speakers.

Just before I hit the buy button I noticed something though. The Infinitys are 2 ohm speakers. The stock tweeters are probably 4 ohm - so they wouldn't be doing much tweeting relative to the 2 ohm Infinitys. Does anybody know the resistance of the stock speakers? Those of you who have installed these Infinity speakers - did you notice any deleterious effect on the soundstage?

I'm definitely not an audiophile/audio expert/snob - in other words, I'm not going to put a lot of time/money into an audio system - but I do like the stereo imaging that the factory tweeters provide and would hate to lose that. I'll pick another set of replacement speakers (4 ohm) if that's the case.

    Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

SlowPro - When you say you want to replace the "tweeters", you mean the speakers, right? "Tweeter" technically refers only to the teeny-tiny speakers that put out only high-frequency sounds. The front speaker sets in the VX have woofers in the bottom of the doors and tweeters up by the A-pillar.

If you are going to replace all the speakers, then it's fine to go with the lower-impedence Infinity's. The lower impedence will actually draw more power out of the amplifier. If all speakers are being replaced with the Infinity's, then you are fine. If you replaced only the rear speakers with Infinity's but left the front stock, the rears will be louder afterward relative to the fronts.

Thanks for the pics. Looks like 4 Ohms to me too. Also looks like they are rated for 8 watts - whohooo! - EIGHT whole watts! Beastly! I can't believe mine have lasted this long...

    VehiGAZ:

No, I don't want to replace the tweeters - just the four main speakers. What I was saying is that if I replace the stock speakers in the doors and the rear with a set of Infinity 2 Ohm speakers, then the existing 4 Ohm tweeters would not be heard. The Infinitys I'm considering do have their own coaxial tweeters so there would be no overall lack of high freq but it would be emanating from the bottom of the doors. That would provide good stereo imaging for my feet but I would rather retain use of the OEM tweeters which are located up high so as to be more pleasing to the ears rather than the feet.

I dunno - I've about decided it doesn't matter. I can't hear anything above 12k Hz anyway so this is probably just splitting hairs...

Too much splitting ears over the years? :-)

Ok, I got ya! Then I say don't worry about the effect of the new speakers on the stock tweeter output - the tweets don't actually have a 4 ohm load regardless of what they are rated for. A true tweeter is usually like 1.3-1.7 ohms, and all that math goes out the window when it comes to tweeters.

I would suggest going to the component (seperate tweeter and woofer) Infinity's in the front and go ahead and replace the stock woofer and tweeter in front and replace the rear woofers with the speakers you are referencing, just a thought The performance difference between the stock tweeters and the Infinity's tweeters has to be heard to be appreciated it is a huge step up definitely worth the little extra cash for the fronts in my opinion.

VehiGAZ: - Ha! Good one! Yeah a lifetime of splitting ears with motorcycles, guns, power tools and who knows maybe even a little loud music have rendered this an exercise in splitting hairs.

LittleBeast: - Hmmm... like how much extra cash are we talking about here? Are the component Infinitys also 2 Ohm so as to match the 6022SI's that would go in the rear? If you give me a model number I can look this up on Crutchfield. Oh - and do the component tweeters fit behind the factory grille/cover or would I have to surface mount them?

    Thanks!

more than likely they would need to be surface mounted.. i used boston acoustics components which came with pods that i mounted on the stock tweeter pieces

but first i cut a big hole in my tweeter pod to try to make them mount flush.. big mistake.. so i had to smooth both sides out with fiberglass... but you could just mount them onto the stock tweeter pods like i did without any other mods

Thread where I did all 4 speakers in one afternoon:
    http://www.vehicross.info/forums/showthread.php?t=14168

eBay Buy it now on the INFINITY Reference 6020cs 6½" Components that I used ($106 shipping included):
    http://cgi.ebay.com/INFINITY-REFEREN...QQcmdZViewItem

Your INFINITY REFERENCE 6022SI are avaliable for $59 with free shipping here from the same seller on eBay:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/INFINITY-REFEREN...QQcmdZViewItem

The seller on both of those eBay auctions is "HookedOnTronics", they have a 99% positive feedback rating and I have ordered from them 4 times now and everything has been perfect! Their items are brand new factory sealed and are the exact same items other stores try to charge more for. HookedOnTronics worked for me Seriouly though I would highly recomended the HookedOnTronics store

If you don't like shopping on eBay you can buy from them direct e-mail them at: sales@hookedontronics.com or go to their website: http://www.hookedontronics.com/index.jsp here are the 6.5" speakers on their website: http://www.hookedontronics.com/show_...st.jsp?cid=876 and components: http://www.hookedontronics.com/show_...9&attrbA=&pg=2

Or if you like spending extra cash for no reason, lol, the components are avaliable on Crutchfield for $64 more @ $170 and that is before shipping add shipping and you are looking at almost $100 more per set at Crutchfield:
    http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...cs&i=1086020CS
and the INFINITY REFERENCE 6022SI's you like are $90 before shipping on Crutchfield that is $30 more before shipping at Crutchfield:
    http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...SI&i=1086022SI

You mean I can keep the tweeters up where they belong for less than the cost of one tank of gas? Sold!

Thanks for posting those links. I ordered from HookedOnTronics via ebay. Not afraid to use ebay - that's how I got the VX although I have to admit it was a little freaky committing that much money with one mouse click especially since I had never even SAT in a VX much less driven one.

One thing - in the pics of your installation it looks like the tweeter housing is white. Is it really white? Or is that reflection? I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would make a white speaker housing unless it's for a boat. IMO, speakers are the opposite of children - they should be heard, not seen. Just kidding - I like noisy children. I don't want to see a glaring white tweeter in the black interior of my VX though. If that thing's really white, it's going to get a coat of black Krylon Fusion. Anybody use that paint? It's the shiznit for painting plastic!

OK I'm rambling and it's Saturday afternoon and there's outdoor work to be done. Gawd I hate willow oaks this time of year! Just wanted to say thanks for your advice everybody!

No it is actually silver and almost matches the factory grey to a T, although it may be a tad lighter, but it is close enough to never notice. Yeah I guess it does kinda look white in some of the photos, but rest assured the tweeter mounts are silver in color.
