    Rebadged Coleman Safari Rack???

Hey folks, was looking on Amazon and ran across this:

    http://www.amazon.com/SportRack-A210...6100140&sr=8-2

This rack looks identical to my Coleman Safari Rack, which was sadly discontinued a while back (sucks too cause it was only $120). This one is more expensive, but it looks identical as far as I can tell. Anyway, just thought I would post this since it is still way more affordable (and better looking, imo) than the Yakima rack.

yep that does look just like the coleman basket.. very nice basket, i had the one for a while til a yakima loadwarrior popped up on craigslist locally for like 100 or 150.. then i sold it off.. when costco was tryin to get rid of them, i think the coleman basket was down to like 70 bucks with free shipping.. but yah if anyone is looking for a good basket.. that one will 99% surely fit with a very small trim out of the center of it

    Thumbs up

Yeah, the Coleman basket was a STEAL after it got discontinued. I paid $120 for it when I bought mine, but yeah, it was down to $69 for bit there.

The only reason I posted this, is because it looks identical to the Coleman basket (probably is) and this is a VERY sturdy basket. But as Etl mentioned, you might need to trim out 3/4" of the tubing to make it fit perfectly on the VX. And this is easily done with a $6 tube cutter from Home Depot and a drill (for the new holes). Either way, this basket looks really good (better than the Yakima rack, imo) and is super beefy.

    specs call for a

round or square mounting bars. Our different shaped bars are neither. How would they mount?

the mounts are actually more oval shaped anyway.. they would just clamp right onto the stock crossbars... i have round bars, but you can see the mounts in this pic and how they would work well on the factory bars

It's hard to see in this photo, but if the rack IS like the Coleman rack, it will come with brackets for wing style crossbars.

Basically, 4 pieces of plastic that snap into place on the bottom of the rack, then the rack is placed on top of the wing bars, and then 4 metal pieces are layed on top of the rack and tightened down with some bolts. I can take a close-up photo if you like.

EDIT: damn, beat me to it!

Yeah, the mounting brackets do not exactly match up with the wing bars. With trimming it will fit. Mine holds the full size spare and not much else. The extension was being sold on ebay for about $40.

anyone interested in this rack or this style...check out the black widow one..

both jofotoz and i have it and it works GREAT...super beefy and there is no trimming required to mount...and it comes with the same mounting system as the one pictured above...

designed for wing style crossbars with no modification...
