    Are you kidding me??

I had an ignition coil replaced on cyl. #5 12 months ago.
Several days ago the engine began running rough and the
check engine light began flashing. The diagnostic indicated
a misfire on cyl. #5. I ordered a new coil and when I removed
the old one the spark plug was inside the rubber boot.
The repair shop never screwed the spark plug into the engine block.
I assume the spark was arcing from the plug to the engine block
    for the past 12 months!

Sounds like a good case for going to costco and buying a 100 piece tool kit and doing some of this maintenance stuff yourself..

The flow charts at service shops don't include pictures of tools

Agreed. I did replace the coil myself this time around. Advance
Auto provided the diagnostics free of charge and the coil pack
was 95.00. Sure beats $300. And I made sure the friggin plug
    was screwed into the block

dang that sucks.. hopefully no damage done to your block.. yea i decided all maintenance would be done by me or with me present when i had a shop tech tell me that he checked my spark plug wires and they needed to be replaced

after a few hours to think about this.. I am thinking your shop tech turned the plug in snug.. and it unwound over the last year and just snugged into the coil boot tighter.. still substandard maintenance for sure

Good thing he didn't notice your blinker fluid was low, too - that stuff is expensive!
