    Custom Roof Rack

Well since I missed the 696 thule that was for sale on ebay beause I couldnt wake up in time from my nap to bid on it and lost so it got me to thinking. Why dont I just build one to my liking and since I was going to have to customize the 696 anyways due to lights and other things?? lol. So my quest for a non jack of all trades (because my name isnt jack) and a non do it yourselfer will take on this project. Hopefully this turns out well and will post pics here as I go and funds become available. Now for the dreaded research.

One question because would be simplier to draw on paper. My only skills are paint. SO I am assuming cad (auto cad, forget exactly whats its called. you engineer peeps know what its called tho ) Anyways what would be best way for diagrams and such?

    Dumke,

One option that's been bouncing around in my head for a while is to try & score a roof rack from an FJ. I think it would bolt right up without any serious mods. The only problems I can think of are:

    1. Unbolting the OEM rails & filling the holes.

    2. Modifying the fin so that it could be retained.

From his pics I figure Dumke will be sure and have his roof rack "Powder" coated.

    Have you seen http://www.amazon.com/SportRack-A210...8114412&sr=8-1?

It looks almost identical to the Coleman Safari Rack (such a shame they discontinued that rack). It's a tad pricey but I bet it would work nicely. You may need to shorten the tubes a bit like I did with my Coleman, but that is really easy to do so that is not really a concern.

Rob was looking for a more sporty rack like the aluminum Thule - Rob, perhaps contact Ascinder as he found a similar rack on eBay for his VX.

Check out ProgeCAD http://www.icadsales.com/ for free, simple and basic drafting. Sketchup is also an easy to use tool for 3d work. http://sketchup.google.com/
