Fugly - looks like it's wearing glasses. But I guess it's important to look different than the Army.

EDIT - Misread the original post, looks like both services are on board. Maybe Ahnold will buy one.

I think the M-ATV is the outgrowth of the extreme waste of money, the MRAP, whereas the ELSORV is in the running for the JLTV contract (HMMWV replacement). If this is the case, the M-ATV is certainly a step in the right direction compared to the pogue deathtrap that the MRAP honestly is. Just MHO, of course. If I were an 88M (truck driver) or MP or construction engineer, the RV-like ride is great! If they replaced the mraps with this m-atv, I might lament the loss of jump seats and ability to stretch out a cot and store all my tailgate-party gear...

The ELSOTV is being tested (with great review's from the troops) by the special ops guys in Aphganistan. At the moment it is a huge improvement on the Toyota pick ups a lot of them get around in. One of the local fab shops here (Ballistic Fab) was contracted to do all the rod ends and some of the bracketrey. A lot of the other stuff was done by other 4x fab shops. The axles are Curry Rock Jocks that have been time tested in trail and comp rigs. The engine is a modified hummer unit. You can see a lot of real world 4x tech in it like the comp cut rear fenders on the one.

Yeah, from what lil googling I just did, it looks like the SRATS was aiming to be the SF vehicle, whereas the ELSORV would be the regular-Army outgrowth. It's really cool to see 4x expertise contributing over to real-world (ie non-recreational) applications. We have such an offroad braintrust here in the states that it's amazing that this is really the first time we're really utilizing it in this way.

All this 4x4 talk, though... While I'm ok with our 1151s, and would welcome this ELSORV (and wish all MRAPs could be scrapped for cash), I'd still rather have had my M1A2SEP . We can certainly discuss offroad capablity there...

Neither vehicle impressed me. None of the videos showed a traversing diagonal slope to indicate its resistance to roll-over. The current HMMWV will go twice as many places as these two prototypes and just needs to be "armored" more to resist road mines and small arms attack. I say re-focus efforts to upgrade the current massive existing inventory of HMMWV's with additional armor and disregard these two wannabe's as they're totally worthless pieces of junk money pits.

I can assure you, the most current HMMWV, the M1151, really can't be made to be more "armored." We're really at the end of the line for the "improvement" of the HMMWV. Again, though, I got no real complaints with the vehicle, so I see no issue with that. I can see a bigger, better powerplant maybe. More oomph for the ungodly bloat...

As long as we're talking opinions here, I say we re-focus on letting meat-eaters be meat-eaters and tell the military-industrial complex to calm down. I wish whiny soccermoms would just shut up sometimes about going overboard protecting their sons by writing their congressmen. THe amount of crap we wear, the amount of crap we buy and spend our tax money on--all to make it look like we can make war "safe" somehow. All at the behest of "well-meaning" types who "want the best" for their soldiers. I didn't need those 8 extra MRAPS they dumped on me (the ones we had weren't used to begin with). And I fear that it's only a matter of years where I'll be wearing a bear suit to walk down the street or riding some new "Mine Proof" vehicle. Honest: there's only one way to be "mine resistant, ambush protected," and it ain't riding in a bank delivery truck.

My thoughts on all this: 1)let soldiers figure out what we need and request for, not the manufacturers, and 2)have congress actually control purse strings, not bend over backwards to either whiny moms, manufacturers, or even the soldiers themselves //end soapbox.

I just saw one of these on a semi trailer and had to u-turn and stalk it to get some pics! Everything is MASSIVE! The diameter of the coil spring steel is about 1.5" (38mm)! Hydraulic lines are everywhere for the 4 wheel steering and winch and who knows what! The yokes at the drivelines contain u-joints about 7" (178 mm) around! Really cool to look that thing over while it was on a trailer... my phone is a POS so I'm not sure I will be able to post pics of the Osh Kosh with my VX since that is all I had but I'll work on it...
