    thump thump.. new sub install

STILL modding my VX.. i seriously need help.. i decided that i wanted to put a sub in the rear door now that ive got oversized tires and cant use the spare.. heres the progress....

all thats left now is to cover it (got padded black vinyl) and install it...

it uses the 3 bolt holes that hold the factory spare tire holder

the sub is the Rockford Fosgate Punch Stage 3 shallow mount

    Your box looks sweet.
I went with the Kicker Wakeboard boat subwoofer. It is a solid Poly box, UV resistant, waterproof, and fit in the spare area perfect. I cut a hole in the extra rear door cover that I had from the abandoned VX that was at the local Isuzu dealership. It works like a champ, and I mounted a boat cleat to the box for easy portability.
Got it for 50 bucks at Circuit City, it was a display, never even been hooked up...

ran into some fitment issues.. got em taken care of now, building is done, im gonna ride around with it empty for a couple days, see how it holds up, then all thats left is to cover and mount the sub!

    heres the raw product..

storage on the sides for 1 bottle of oil, one bottle of ATF, and a pair of sandals

storage on the other side for jumper cables

and still room for a socket set, fire extinguisher and mag light on top (yes i will be installing straps to hold them in place during offroading)

Any concerns about rattling the fire extinguisher, or any other "chemicals" that may go on top of the sub?

hm now that you mention it.. it might be a bad idea to put the fire extinguisher up there... but the oil and stuff im not concerned about, currently my oil is stored on its side inside my sub box, at least now its standing upright

I do not think vibration hurts a fire extinguisher. I wouldn't put it there, because it becomes useless. If you wanted it, I would assume something is on fire, so that means you have to get out, use your key to open the rear door, unscrew the cover knobs, (if you reinstall the cover) and then get the extinguisher out. I would think mounting it behind the driver's seat in the small window frame would be better, but I would only do that if I had tint, otherwise it might release the safety valve from the heat?

Here are a few pics of my sub install, I manage to fit tow straps, a tool set, and a first aid kit in there with room to spare. That is obviously not the original door cover (red knobs), it came off of an abandoned VX at a dealership in the area, so I still have a nice shiny new one in my shed

whoopie!! all done.. i cant wait to crank this baby up, but rockford fosgate recommends 20-30 hours of listening before pushing past 50% volume.. but so far it sounds gooood

oh and dont mind the stain.. still tryin to figure out how that got there.. but i assure you it will be DELETED! the wires visible in the interior pic are from my old sub install and are disconnected now too, just gotta pull em

    looks great man...

well done! i actually was planning on doing something similar with my VX for a final solution on the rear gate and spare tire for me...

i was gonna do storage above it (where your fire extinguisher is), and 2@10's, then make a mount for the spare inbetween the two subs (to keep them from being damaged and give me good storage space)

    Cool, nice finishing!

Let me know if you experience any sag in your door after a few months. I started to notice it in mine - had to adjust the latch a few times.

Might not be a noticeable factor with a smaller box...

pb, that sounds cool.. not sure how to mount the spare there.. would be interested to see that though, hopefully we see that idea come to life when you get your new VX.... actually while i was at work one our mechanics had a really good idea.. im thinking i will relocate the rear speakers to the open area above the sub box.. maybe do 3 6.5" speakers up there, will give better rear fill, and when i am tailgating or anything, opening the door will give good sound outside the VX too... hmm!

kenny, ill definitely keep an eye on that, my box weighs about 15lbs.. the sub is about 18.. so overall i dont think its too much heavier than the spare tire was... without a doubt lighter than tom4brens or marlins doors... i have noticed my rear door popper doesnt work worth crap with it installed though

ok, i actually took a pic of what i started (and didnt finish yet because im sellin)

this is the very very rough version of what i was thinking... basically i was bored one day and wanted to work on the VX outside so i got out the saw and rattle can to see if the spare would even fit, and if the subs would fit.

i did test fit the full size spare (31 inch), and it WILL fit inside the rear door.... it does block your view out your rear view mirror, but i dont use that anyhow haha...

    where the spare tire mounts-

and i 'microsoft painted' where the subs would go...

i also like this design because it keeps the subs from being damaged, due to the full size spare being mounted in front of them...

Jack, I think that would look good if it covered the entire opening. Then mount the subs (2 10's?")at an angle (left top/right bottom). If you 'glass the back you would have the entire spare area for volume.
