throttle sound louder than it should

Hi, my '99 Vx sound a bit louder at the throttle and I think is a signal of running "rich". Where do I begin to look? My friend's Vx doesn't make any sound and even runs better than mine...much better. This problem I have it since I bought it three years ago. never pay attention thinking that it was ok. If it's running rich you should be able to smell fuel in the exhaust. Should be quite a bit of buildup on the exhaust pipe too. Unlikely that that the tone or noise level is changing from it running rich though. I would lean towards another culprit. Vacuum leak or bad gasket (though you would/should expect a CEL).

Check to see that your muffler is still there.





And not rusted through.

Check the clutch on your fan. If that gets worn, it can very loud.

Also, a loose EGR nut can create a louder exhaust note. (But I couldn't hear that over my PV1 catback!)

Ditto on the above. But get a engine code reading. My bet is a #171 and you'll have to change your common chamber gaskets. Torque only to 13lbs. or hand tight max. Keep us posted.
