What have you towed with your VX?

After making a 600 mile round-trip to pick up a Mustang for my wife, I got to thinking, what all have you guys towed with your VX? I've towed a 10ft utility trailer with car parts and wheels on it and a few other small things, but the Mustang was the big task:



The VX handled it though just fine as long as I kept it around 60mph. Made a 300mile trip in 3rd gear the whole way, loaded down, and with alot of up/down hills (yes, North Florida has hills) and still averaged about 15mpg Had 230 miles on the tank with just about a 1/4 tank (tad more) left when I got back. Not too shabby!

5x8' Utility trailer, fully loaded (est 2500lbs) with a small apartment of stuff (minus a sofa) about 300 miles including mountains (and 300 miles back, with only my full sized spare at the very front).. avg about 17mpg




6x12 trailer loaded pretty heavily (est 3000-3500lbs) about 40 miles through mostly back roads and one major surface street

Nice! I figure I might be close to the 17mpg I normally avg but I didn't calculate it like I usually do, just saw how much was left and the mileage. The car weighs a bit over 3K lbs on it's own and figure plus the trailer etc probably somewhere between 3500-4000lbs and I had my VX loaded with my fullsize spare, tools, etc for my long trip. I was very happy with how ol' Sylvia handled it with ease! About 65 and the trailer started to sway a bit (the tow dolly was a piece of junk) so kept it between 55-60 the whole way

I've towed my SeaDoo boat, a twin pack of jetskis & a utility trailer carrying a Dingo (not all at the same time).

The only problem I have ever encountered is that time I couldn't stop in time when the trailer was empty. If you are going to tow on a regular basis, you may want to consider diabling your ABS.

Can you tell me what hitch you are using? Round tube?

Mine is a square Reese hitch. It's pretty beefy. And Tom, ya I have thought about that but I don't tow that often with it. I'm thinking of taking it out anyways whenever I get rid of the TOD case.

FWIW, back inna day (late 80's) I towed an 18' Bayliner (350 Penta outdrive) almost weekly, from 2000' elevation on the Big Island to Keauhou bay...it was only about a 5-6 mile trip (so yeah, kinda steep in places) but was managed OK with an 88 Toyota 4wd X-tra cab PU. (3L V-6, manual 5 sp)

I won't say it wasn't exciting the first few times, (very steep learning curve) but after I became aware of how slow I had to go on the way down, it wasn't too bad.

In hindsight, trailer brakes prolly woulda been a good idea...

I tow an '06 Sportster which is 15' 4" I think & about 1500 lbs.

I don't know the specs on the Challenger 180.

You should be OK with it though.

Edit:

The Challenger 180 is 17' 7" and weighs 1900 lbs. I think the VX could handle it.
