Transmission sliping in reverse.

Hey guys,
Ive been over here in Hawaii working on the property we bought a few years ago. The Vehicross has been great for getting me thru the pukas and brush.
Ive used it to pull some nasty roots from across the driveway already. I noticed
the other day while leaving it was slipping in reverse.
I did a fluid swap before I left Seattle and filled it to the proper amount of fluid. The fluid that came out was used but smelt/looked/felt fine.
Since I noticed it slipping, I again swapped the fluid and the transfer case thinking that could be the issue. It was still slipping so I added a bottle of Lucas to the tranny with nothing.
I plan on using the tranny till it goes so I have some time to get a new one.
Ive already started asking local places for one but nothing positive yet. Its Hawaii you know, theyll get back to me after the look thru the yard.
This area is hard pressed for work and I heard of a really good transmission guy.
I was thinking maybe I can just replace or fix whats Wrong with the Reverse gear for a couple hundred bucks cash???
Can I get just a reverse band or gear or spring?
Can you put that in from the bottom?

Please I know one of you guys has the answers, anything would be great.

What transmission fluid did you use when you swapped fluid? I've heard that Dexron IV can cause some problems (especially in reverse) with our transmission. The Dextron IV bottle will say that it's compatible with dexron III transmissions but ours are apparently "picky." If you used IV, I would start by doing another fluid change with III and seeing if that helps. Otherwise I'm not sure about fixing one part of a transmission for less $$. Good luck!!

how did you check the fluid level? when my transmission fluid gets low, i get a lot of hesitation and clunking in reverse, like i shift and nothing happens for a solid 2 seconds. to check trans fluid make sure the vehicle is running for 5 minutes or so and that you have cycled through all of the gears once or twice.

I used Dex III here in Hawaii and in Seattle.
I checked and checked and checked the fluid level.
It was hot to the touch and I was worried about getting burned the last time.
I pulled the plug, jumped in the rig and ran it thru all the gears several times while parked. I pumped it so full it was pouring out, prob the whole last quart I put in came back out and it was way more than warm fluid running down my arm while I replaced the bolt.
But yeah the reverse is slow to engage, it has been as long as Ive owned the rig so it makes me think its been on its way out for a while. I have always had to wait to make sure before applying any gas for reverse but in drive it jumps right into gear and is tugging on the brakes.

AFAIK (and I am no expert) to change the belts in the tranny you have to drop the tranny. The parts are the cheap part of the rebuild and if they have it apart you might as well have them replace all the wearable parts (bands, clutches, etc.)...someone correct me if I am wrong.

From what pics I saw it looked to me like they took the tranny out, put it on the bench upside down, then did all the work thru the hole the pan covers. It looked like a bank of solenoids in a casing that came out as a unit with some steel gaskets behind it. Im sure Ive simplified it but it didnt look like that tough of a job. Im thinking if someone already has a good working know how of Auto Transmissions they may know lots of tricks.
One guy I over heard him saying so many times hes just dropped the pan and pulled the little pin from the bottom and put it back in place, for our tranny it could be as easy as maybe replacing some O rings around the solenoids? But Im by no means an expert, Im just guessing or should I say hoping?

Does anyone Know if the 98 Rodeo 4x4 AT w/ 3.2 will fit for a replacement tranny?
Some one emailed me that has a 94 and a 98 right here in my neighbor hood.
I need a CV so I thought Id grab those if one or two are still good.
But the Transmission would be great if it fit. They said "cheaper if I pull myself".

How many miles on the VX, and how long since the transmission filter has been changed? (Or is that what you meant in the original post when you said "transfer case"?)

Might be a longshot, but a clogged filter can effect the fluid flow through a transmission, regardless of whether the fluid is new or not. And it wouldn't be that time consuming or expensive to at least try first before starting to remove and replace the whole trans-x.

This should answer most of your tranny rebuild questions...it is a very good write-up. Along with the long list of tools you will need a rebuild kit (about $150 and a new filter ($20-80 depending on brand).

Mine has almost 170000 so its about due judging from what other people have posted as far as when they had tranny problems. I never did a filter swap. Im not sure if ever but it looks like someone did at one time by the gasket stuff down there.
Ive thought about doing a filter swap and new fluids again plus the lucas too.
Im just thinking that with a 170000 miles , filter or not it prob need to be rebuilt.
What I should have said in my first post was I topped off the Transfer case.


Thanks for the links... That rebuild looks like one I read but maybe some one pasted it to another board. I didnt see the pics like in the other I had seen. But all in all it didnt look to bad and for those prices I can get tires and a lift and something else too if I do the rebuild myself..
Look at most guys who do transmissions. Their no smarter than most of us maybe Im even a little smarter than some of them. If they can do a rebuild I had better be able to also. 2400$ to 250$ I like saving that kind 'O' cash.

COOL!! Hows the Deuce doin? I loved that truck, I love this truck too though.
Diff duties. Im trying to find another Deuce over here.
I was looking into that but Im limited to my automotive tools here in Hawaii.
I only a small number of them are here. The others are still in Storage in WA.
Was the process that hard? Did it get rid of the TOD by doing so?

I was looking on Ebay for parts and saw this list of trannys for the filter kit.
Does this mean all these are the same tranny and can be swapped? The 6VE1?
If so its a pretty nice list for ref. of what does and dosent fit.

if just because they have the same filter that these other transmissions are a bolt in replacement. With enough cash you could make them work but not worth it. If you do not mind a little extra work I saw a post on here that the 4L60-E would be a good replacement

Im hoping to keep this as easy as I can. I have a lot on my plate with building the house. Im still on the clearing property stage so I still have a long way to go. Plus the limited tools I have on hand, I really just need to be able to get things done so, I need the tranny issue solved as soon as I can.
It felt kinda funny in drive yesterday while shifting but It could be in my mind, with it slipping in reverse. But Yeah the the easier the better right now.
