    tire width

    For all you tire guru's:

Is it possible to get the tires' width to extend slightly beyond the cladding for a more rugged look? Does the size/width of the tire matter? I don't mean the late model Honda Civics with 10 inches of tire extending beyond the body, I hate that look SO MUCH!!
I just want 1-2 inches to stick out for a more "tank-like" look. I appreciate any replies!! Thanks!

    how about spacers??

I've never tried these, but they must work, 'cause everyone sells them.

Either that, or you could buy rims with a different backset, or is it offset?!?!

Hi, I just got nitto grapplers and they make the vx look a lot more aggressive. they dont stick out past the fenders but they are right out to the edge. when i walk up to my vx i am surprised how much better it looks with the 285/60/18s.

    285/60 - 18 Yokohamas on 18x8.5 Enkei's....

I love the look. It's not too much, but just enough to make it look predatory.

    Spacer Question???

Tell me if I'm wrong ...but is it O.K. to use the (above) mentioned spacers with a VX 4 wheel drive system?? I keep hearing it is not a good idea on our TOD system!!! I really want to put some 285/60/18's on my stock 18' wheels (with a 1.5" spacer) to really make the tires flush with the body side ...I would really appreciate an honest opinion!!!..WormGod ..YOUR VX is pretty AWSOME with those tires.....Take it from a CAR DESIGNER who has been in this business for over ten years and seen every possible Concept Car around the world...Your VX has just the right balance of proportion with your tire/ wheel combo!!!..Its every Designers dream to make that balance of proportion in every car!!!

i cant imagine it would have any affect on the tod since the tod is looking at wheel speed differences. Maybe in a turn, i dont know???

The spacers would just increase the bearing loads because you are moving the load center outboard.

Wormgod, that is THE look I want!! Looks great! I just took off my 15 inch wheels that had BFG 31x10.5x15 on them from Moab and had the 18" factory wheels put back on with 285/55/18 pirelli scorpions. But once I got used to the tires sticking out from the body, it is very difficult to go back to anything else! I love my new tires but think I need different rims with them to achieve the look you have!

    Tire widith

I have NITTO Gabbers 265/75/17 on MAk planets 17x8 this size is 31.6 x 17. If gives the truck a tougher look than stock. I will be putting 265/60/18 KUMO Ecsta on my stock 18x7 wheels. I was told that 285 size tire are not recomend to be put on the 18x7 wheels. Iwas told you need a 18/10 wheel for 285 wide tires.

"Generally", the safest tire width shouldnt exceed 3" (inside AND outside of the tire combined) of the wheel. An 8" wheel should be fine with a tire of a width around 11.5". Many shops that do tire mounts won't even attempt it and will warn you against it. Many will do it without a word. Having an 8.5" wheel and a 285/60 tire (in my case) works out quite well.

It is good advice to know your size before you go buying though. Nothing like buying too large or too small and then finding out later that you could be in a bit of a hitch for it.

275 is the technical reasonable limit on the stock 7” rim but there are variables among the manufacturers as well as the height of the tire above the rim. Many of us have run 285/55/18s on the stock rim w/o issue except for a bit more wear down the center that can be alleviated by lowering the pressure and regular rotation.

Thanks everybody for the great advice!

Another query, does anybody run FWD wheels on their VX? First, is it possible, and second, does it have any affect on performance on or off road due to the VX's curb weight, etc.? I think our beasts would look super sweet sittin' on some Arelli Assassyn wheels and was pondering buying them. Any suggestions?

I have 265mm wide tires on a +10mm offset rim. Looks different from Wormgod's, but they do stick out about 1.5" more than stock:
