    Dynomax muffler - some questions

    Hi everyone,

After much researching, I've decided to go w/ a Dynomax muffler and tip to replace the rusty stock exhaust. This was based on Rickshaw's, Gussies, and others' recommendations/reviews.

I am still deciding on a Superturbo or the new VT. It doesn't look like anyone has done the VT install yet, and the no-drone benefit seems really nice...

I did have a question regarding fit and configuration since I'm new to this. It looks like there are 2 models for the superturbo that people have recommended. The 17744 which has a 3" inlet/outlet, the 17747 which has a 2.25", and a 17748 w/ a 2.5" opening. I'm getting some conflicting information about which size fits the stock piping in our trucks.

Regardless of the stock size, someone mentioned that going too big would affect torque, so it sounds like the 3" is not a good idea. Between the 2.25 and the 2.5 - which makes the most sense? What would be the easiest to install if that was the most important criteria?

Also there was some conflicting discussions on whether or not the muffler had to have a center to outset configuration vs center to center or outset to outset. What does our stock muffler use?

    I appreciate the help!

I'll leave it to those who've done muffler swaps to answer the more technical questions, but I will say that any +/- HP or torque based on muffler configuration is likely to be marginal at best. I've read many, many, many exhaust mod reviews on sports car sites where owners claimed to feel (via "butt dyno") the increase in power, only to have a real dyno show them they are sadly mistaken.

I'm really interested in the VT muffler, so I say pick it so you can write a review and post sound clips.

anyone ever heard a dynomax on any other vehicles?? im thinking about getting one for my 4runner, but generally dont like how exhausts sound on Toyota's, they make them sound very 'tinny'....

IMO 3" is way too big for a V6. Dunno what your stock pipe is, but in your shoes I would go 2.5"...in fact I had a 17748 on my old 99 Trooper (same 3.5L as a VX, although honestly the 2.25" would work fine too based on size charts at Dynomax). I liked it a lot. So much that I put a 17747 on my current 93 Trooper (went with the smaller 2.25" for the smaller 3.2L). Neither one droned on the highway, BTW. Nice mellow throb at idle, you can hear it on acceleration but it is not noticeable at cruise.

Thanks for the reference. Yeah, I'm looking at the 17748 right now as well for the VX. I liked the sound based on Rickshaw's media clip. Not too loud at idle, but sounds mean during full throttle.

So I'm hoping the 17748 should fit well w/ the stock pipes.

Just googling dynomax 17748, I found some threads about installs on other trucks. Here's a video of it on a Dodge Nitro

The dynomax superturbo are excelent choices for any V6 engine, altough many owners of V8 cars/trucks use them the nice mellow sound that comes from V6 are more appealing

    Dynomax superturbo hands down

The dynomax turbo is a great muffler. I'm going to use it or the magnaflow performance muffler on my 73 challenger. I actually prefer the magnaflow since it's all stainless steel. You might also consider the PowerVault PV stainless muffler and the Borla carbon fiber stainless tip. I've had that on my VX and it sounds 'serious' when you accelerate hard, yet quiet when idling. I don't think you'd be disappointed. It's been an awesome setup for me.
If you do go for a dynomax or other, don't use 3" stuff. That's really for high horsepower motors. I'm using 3" on my challenger but it's way up there in HP. I'd stay under 2.5" for the HP range that the VX puts out even wth a S/C. The smaller diameter also helps scavenge the exhaust better out the back as the exhaust gets cooler back there. Hope this helps! scott

That would be in a universe where PV mufflers were still in production...

    Sorry but, it's been years...

I ran a Dynomax muffler for a stock replacement sounded good lasted 4 years. Did a little research and went with a Cherry Bomb {Pro series muffler} 3'' in 3'' out to a stock system. If you have ever looked at the stock exhaust there are so many bends and the small pipes, everything is so restricted let it flow. I also have a 3'' cold air intake your converters are so small and restrictive 3'' muffler won;t hurt I have ran a 3'' for7years now. Check it out

Whoa, Ldub! What was I thinkin'?
PV's are dead and buried and that's way too bad! When I think about my VX, I guess I just think I'm in a different world.......or would that be universe?

Awesome - thanks! I just put in an order for the Super Turbo 17748 and a Dynomax Dual-wall tip from Amazon.

Hope to get it installed next week sometime! I will take pics, promise!

Let us know how it sounds after installation. I know the dynomax's sound deep, mellow and awesome on Mopar V-8's. Keep us informed! thanks!
