Ummm, so they call it a "rear-mounted spare wheel compartment"....but "it's actually a lockable storage area"....so where's the spare?

And yes, you guys are obviously great minds!! Your "rear cubby" (my description) is a fantastic idea. Betcha have a backlog already JAMAS!

As I'm cogitatin' on this further.....you had Jon make yours deeper, so it would meet flush with the Tone box and your dog wouldn't fall in between (personally, I think putting my 8 lb Pom Teddy there, cover it with my cargo net....would be a fantastic idea...but I digress...)

For those of us w/o a Tone or a JAMAS Box...Jon would you suggest we use the same design as Mav, to maximize depth? Is your "standard" model basically flush with the rear door?

Mav- How much more inward does your box come vs. a basically "flush" with rear door design? 3" or 4"??

Sue - The door box "encroaches" into the cargo area by exactly the distance between the Tone/JAMAS cargo box and the rear door. I'm not sure of the exact measurement, but a good rule of thumb would be to say that it sticks in just about to your rear tie downs. Take a look at the pics below, the area between the cargo box and the door (where the rear walls "merge" towards the tailgate) is the area that's consumed by my door box.

Personally I don't see the advantage of a more shallow variant; since the rear walls curve inward to the tailgate, you probably don't even use that extra inch or two now.
