Saw an interesting show on the Smithsonian channel a while back. They use them too.
No, the beatles they use don't go for living flesh, only dead tissue. It takes them weeks to strip a carcass so living things probably wouldn't sit still long enough for them to be interested.

Put a smiley after you say that Bub.
yeah thats true. My colony will eat a deer skull in 3-4 days.

I always take life with a grain of salt. Plus mashed potatoes and gravy!
I've only used maceration and natural decay, which is unpleasant and messy.
And for the record, I personally prefer my animals alive over dead. I'm not a fan of trophy hunting really. Hunting to eat, playing by the rules, I have no problem with. But killing just to kill is putting unnecessary pressure on wildlife, just to hang it on your wall. I am not a fan off that thought process. Not trying to make a debate, just thought I needed to say that here.
Most the skulls I have acquired were either found or processed from road kill. I will admit though that I have a few that I acquired when I was younger that were likely a result of hunting. I try to stay away from that industry nowadays though. Not trying to start a debate, just don't want my stance confused. I only shoot animals with my Nikon.
For the record, I have nothing against hunters who respect the land, the animals and the law. Its the poachers and idiots who kill just to kill that urk me.
Anyway, skulls are cool. A few years back I bought a human specimen from the Bone Room in Berkeley. I would like to acquire another.

No, its legal to own human bones and skulls, it all depends on how they were acquired, but believe you me, that receipt is in my safe.

I eat Vegetarians! I hunt to eat not for sport. Nothing like providing fresh meat with no chemicals to family. You cant eat antlers. Hunting is in my blood. I just enjoy and respect the great outdoors.
And that's all good! I'm with ya! I've eaten venison and pheasant, and LOVE fishing and eating trout.
Here's an example of what I don't like:
1) "OMG, there's a rattlesnake!!!" BLAM!
2) "He dude, lets go out and shoot us some coyotes"
3) "RABBIT! Its coming right for us!" BLAM!
Its the needlessness of some of it. I understand, you have a venomous snake in your yard, most folks get out a spade. But why kill it? Relocate it instead.
And unless you have a chicken coupe, I really don't understand the "varmint" thing...coyotes and rabbits are part of the ecosystem, just like rattlesnakes. People are the ones making a mess, not them.
Anyway, fishing season is about to start for me!
Bart
Good idea on relocating snakes. Just chuck the venomous snake on your neighbors front porch; ring their doorbell, and vacate. Then grab your video camera and let the fun begin!!!
When it comes to fishing on my boat-- I just use C4 explosive with a waterproof fuse tied to a rock. Then just use a net to scoop up the big ones. No pole, no bait, no wait. Sure; the eyes are bugged-out, but the meat is still good.
