Thread: Best Horn?

  1. #1

    Question Best Horn?

I don't want to break the bank but what would be a great horn upgrade. i only honk to prevent an incident or to let someone know that they are really, really stupid. I was thinking something close to what a big rig would hve but not cost near as much as them.

If you can find a 150 db horn, it's a bit louder than those offered at local auto stores (those are usually around 120 db):

I'm thinking about those above. Guy regularly has them on eBay.

Is there such a thing as a horn with two volume settings? One for, "hey wake up" and another for "if you don't shape up I'm going to rip you a new one!!!!"

You could always leave your existing horn hooked up, then install an air horn to a separate "Wake up you A$$Hole!" switch!

I would love to have one of those old vintage style Model T sounding horns. Sounded like 200 cow bells being grinded up. Those get attention alright.

That Model 417 doesn't sound "big-riggy" to me at all, going by that sample they have on the site. My parents have one on their RV that really does sound like that (not VX compatible at all), and then some. It'll make you wet yourself. :-) That's the sound I want too. Actually, there are wolf whistle ones that could be fun too LOL

The best horn I ever heard was on my wife's Maserati that she no longer has.

I would love to find one of those. It sounded sooo rich.

After going through MANY styles of air horns and high powered electric horns, I ended up with these:

They are inexpensive and yet, very effective. Plus, they sound good.. very BMW-ish.

Aftermarket horns provide a louder, and often more pleasant sound than stock horns. Stock horns typically have an output of 97 dB. The decibel scale is logarithmic and therefore the sound pressure doubles for every increase of 3 points, i.e. a horn with 118 dB is approximately seven times as loud as a stock horn. http://www.rallylights.com/hella/horns.asp

After entering my VX in a local PT Cruiser & 4X4 Bruiser Show, I came away with one of the door prizes: Hella 85105 Dual-Tone Air-Horn.
