    Transfer Case Problems! 4WD

Can someone help me out. I'm a new member. 01 VX.
My TOD lights up off and on and I hear a chain sound coming from the transfer case area. 4WD just knocks and grinds. Its basically obsolete now. Can someone explain in detail on send me some links to finding a transfer case and installing it myself??

That is not the way to start off a beautiful relationship with your VX. The transfer case sounds like it's toast, that's not to say that it's not rebuildable though. May be cheaper then replacing, especially if it's just a broken chain with no collateral damage...Fingers crossed!!

I'd take it to a reputable tranny shop that specializes in 4WD's and see what they say. It could be something simple or something drastic. Just my 2-cents.

Are you sure its the transfer case? The transfer case is hard to break but the front axle & CVs are more problematic.

You should be able to source a new transfer case from another TOD equiped Isuzu with the same auto tranny. You may get a different low range as many models came with a 2:1 low range rather than the 2.48:1 ratio we have in the VX... or you could upgrade to a 3:1 transfer case from Indy4x which would be a nice upgrade for trails (if you're into that). A new transfer case should be pretty easy to install with a tranny jack & some sockets. Sorry no links to new transfers cases... thats your job .

Is there only 1 model VX in 2001? I would be interested in upgrading to the Indy4X transfer case is the price isn't outrageous.

There is only one model of US VX from 99-01, they only changed the climate control & wheels in 00-01.
The "Ironman" edition was mostly cosmetic, with better speakers, & the JDM had limited edition paint colors available.

Unless you're into 4 wheeling, it isn't worth the upgrade. the 3:1 transfer case give you better crawl ratio.

    Example:
    VX stock:
    2.48(transfer case) x 2.86 (transmission) x 4.30 (axle) = 30.5 crawl ratio
    Lower transfer case gears:
    3.07(transfer case) x 2.86 (transmission) x 4.30 (axle) = 37.75 crawl ratio

I'm pretty sure the T-case indy has will fit out VXs but its probably not worth the $$. Its a much bigger upgrade for Troopers with a 2:1 T-case. Price is $999.00

If you just want a replacement, I would look at junk yards and search for the transmission because they are usually paired with the T-case.
